I'm fairly certain they're deleted and the names become available.

They get deleted and the names are then free for being created (or used while renaming a Pet with an Enchanted Hypnosis Wand) again, they don't go to AdoptRUs. =3

They are completely cleared. The pets names, usernames, items and all that are deleted/cleared out So no the pets wont' be pounded
