I'm pretty sure you should still be able to get infected. The event is still going on and a cure hasn't been released, so I see no reason you shouldn't. Just keep trying, sometimes it can take a long time to get the event.

It will tell you you've been attacked.

If you don't see the message go to the healer and it will tell you.
