I have a pet name in mind that I want to get. Its availible, but i'm not sure how many characters is the max allowed.

Well, I just looked in the pound and saw a pet named kira_kira_not_so_killer, which is 23 letters/symbols, so presumably you shouldn't have any problems. :)
