How do you change your avatar and pet pictures?

For the pets, go to pets > edit description/headshot. For the avatar, go to site preferences > forum options > headshot editor.

As far as I know, though, the pet headshot isn't working, it won't let you change it.

Just a warning, though, Pet headshots don't change for anyone due to a glitch.
