I hit 25 today (I guess I must have missed one?) but have not got the achievement or the essence? Are you only meant to get the the achievement for doing 25 days in a row?

Just a clarification, it's not just 25 days in a row, it's every day up to the 25th of December specifically. So, say if you were to miss the 2nd day and get every other day until the end of the month, you still wouldn't get either achievement.
