Longcat is GONE. It has been removed from the site, and Draconis has taken it's place.

I'd like to take this time to issue an apology to you, the users. In the past month we have been handling a situation with multiple sites, over a silly 64x64 canvas filled with pixels. This was known to all of us as Longcat, and wasn't an important item on the site.

The item caused confusion, and most of all it caused controversy on Subeta, as well as outside of Subeta. We kept fighting for Longcat and Subeta in hopes that it would protect the users, and make Subeta appear strong, and able to find off any attack. Whatever you've been told, keeping Longcat was never about pride, it was about keeping the site safe from internet terrorists now, and in the future.

We weren't aware of the ability of one item to take down multiple fan-dedicated sites, and cause a legion of internet users to attack Subeta and it's users, not only on Subeta, but on other sites. We asked all users to change passwords, and make changes to their internet lives that could have been spared, had the item not been kept up.

Some will look at this as a loss for Subeta, while we are viewing it as a definite win. We are able to continue about our business and create fun, exciting new things for all of you to do, and you are able to play Subeta without worrying about what is lurking, and who is really your friend.

Again, we all apologize for any problems that you may have experienced in the past month due to this little group of pixels, and we hope that all of you keep playing Subeta. The site is about you, the users, and would be nothing without you. We also want to extend an apology to any community outside of Subeta that has been affected by this, including the communities we were having this problem with - all of the chans. Hopefully we can all move on to things that are more important :) We also apologize for any actions we took that may have provoked the chans, including taunting or pushing them to make sure they knew we weren't going to give up. All of this we accept as our fault, and we are apologizing to every party for.

Starting out the new features, is the Cult Revamp! Recoded to work much better, you can now create a cult and choose from a number of pre-made templates, which range from Angelic to Hydrus :)

We are leaving the comments on this post open, in hopes that everyone can play nice. We will disable that easy if need be.

Criminy. I just hope this is all going to be over now, and that we can all go back to our happy little lives. :3 This is a good thing, in my opinion. They gave us a frickin' sweet new item, plus they solved the main problem. And if the *channers continue their harrassment, they are doing so with no grounds.

I'm just glad Keith had the decency not to apologize to those love ers. Personally, I'm kind of sad to see Longcat go - it was a neat cat.

I don't believe that there is any chance at all that this will stop the attacks, but oh well, it was a nice gesture.

The BrokenKat Kat can't be wearable as it is a Minion. I think that a different wearable cat would probably not be the best idea at the moment, but perhaps might be a possibility in the future, but, even if so, it would be a totally different type of cat most likely, perhaps a calico or a Siamese or something.

A "chan" can refer to ANY of the *chans; 4chan, 2chan, 7chan, 420chan, or one of many others. 420chan was the main group responsible.

If you still appear to have a Longcat on your avatar, REMOVE IT AND PUT IT BACK ON. It won't change if it's ON YOU.

Could someone explain, if they don't mind, what exactly is a chan & what is 420 chan?

I almost bought a L-Cat I think it was yesterday or the day before, because it reminded me of my real-life cat who is unusually long...rather glad I didn't now. It's too bad this item can't be shared though.

yes, a middle road would ahve been something like changing t he image to NOT look like Longcat, and change the name of the item. but when you wear it - it still curls all around your body and sits on your shoulders.

I hope we get an feline item later that we can wear like this. I love cats

Does matter if they'd hold to threats or not, its the fact that people were being threatened in general supposedly over something so juvenile.

Besides, who the hell would wait around for things like that to be acted upon. Either way its for none of US to decide. Its for those who received the abuse. It just had gone on to far enough, who cares, at the end of the day its something that does not feel and cannot be touched, so why bother keeping it if it will further problems?

Before people think I'm advocating the destruction of the site as a whole as being preferable to stepping down, I do think there was a "middle road" that could have been taken--but some of the admin (yes, Keith) acted in a fashion that would make it impossible to take that middle road.

If no retaliation attempts had been made, no taunting leaked into the source code, and the Longcat simple remained as it was, the *chans would have eventually grown bored and wandered away.

At this point, of course, that's no longer possible; I just find it ridiculous to call the staff the "bigger men" in this case when some of them were instrumental in turning this into a much worse conflagration than it actually was.

I'm a bit sad to see longcat go, it was adorable. But I don't mind as long as all of these problems are finally sorted out, trying to keep longcat wasn't worth the trouble. And Draconis is cute too.

just_4_laughs its not about throwing in the towel, its not being apart of this petty little fight anymore. Its time someone be the bigger person and I'm proud it was us. All this chaos and nonsense has turned Subeta into a war zone, which its not. This is supposed to be a fun place for everyone. There is something called Taking it too far. Its gone on for nearly a month now its just getting old.

Yeah it sucks we had to lose a cool item over stupidness, but I'd rather lose the item than drag this crap out any longer.

Everyone makes it like this is some little game that we're suckering out and throwing up the white flag. Its not about that anymore, its about account safety. Innocent people who probably didn't even know what was going on lost accounts and had were exposed to vulgar things. Its just ridiculous. Granted this may not stop all that, at least its a move in the right direction.

Correction to that, paines, while I'm not really sure whether to label it terrorism as such or not, yes, violence and threats of violence were, in fact, used. (And I'm also not saying in any way that these tactics were approved of by the chan leaders themselves; there's really no such thing as 100% control over the actions of any large group of individuals, just stating the fact that they were employed).

One last thought before i go...Let me put it this way: Would you rather have a "moral" victory of keeping longcat and end up losing Subeta as a whole? The continued attacks would eventually lead staff to quit as this site really isn't worth constant death threats and credit card fraud, then once the staff quits or just leaves what would we all do? Hmmm? The site would go under and we would all have to go elsewhere to find our amusement. I just don't see the silly cat as being worth it. And , yes, I realize that for some it is about "not giving in to terrorists" but ask yourselves what you really thought would happen in the long run if things stayed as they have been for the last few weeks. I just can't see anything positive coming out of "standing our ground" other than a hollow moral victory that would cost the entire site. Much love to staff and I'm out to have some fun

I like the dragon a lot better... the longcat was pretty stupid, no offense to longcat lovers. I think the dragon is an improvment to longcat, seeing as now I'm using it a lot... o_O'

I'm disappointed and a bit angry. We caved and threw in the towel. We failed to stand up against those who would choose to tell us what we can and can't do. The longcat was nothing, principals were everything but no one had the guts to truly defend them.

Thank you for finally making the right decision. Some may look at this as Subeta giving in, but maybe now our community can use this as a learning experience and move on from it. I didn't agree with the actions taken early in this mess, but I'm glad someone finally came to their senses. Again, thank you.

Forget how' 'cute' it was. It was dangerous. But its over for Subeta. Keith is their which doesnt make subeta entirely safe, not jsut yet.

I'm still shaking my head in amazement that this whole war played out exactly as I predicted when I first saw the Longcat item. *chans attack, Subeta endures, weeks pass, staff gets tired and eventually gives in and removes the Longcat. I don't suppose anyone remembers the thread I made months ago complaining that this might happen. :|

That aside, I fully support the decision to remove the stupid cat from the site, just as I have from the very beginning. From the first Subetean user (and staff, for that matter) reaction this whole silly ordeal just reeks of "I did something stupid, but I'm NOT SORRY FOR IT!" except the staff has now removed the offending item, and it's only some normal users who are still charging blindly into battle screaming war cries without realizing that the heads of Subeta no longer wish to fight. However, I'm a little worried that now that the *chans see us as a source of easy drama, they won't lay down their arms so easily.

So all you people who are busy being affronted and angry about the Longcat's removal, you should really look at it from a logical point of view. We're not "giving in" to the "terrorists." We're removing the source of the problem (a source, that in my opinion, should never have been here in the first place.) You gotta get rid of the source before you can put out the fire, you know? Stop complaining long enough to give the problem a little thought before you start rioting.

I totally feel for those who were directly affected by this whole thing (ie: death threats and real life being torn apart) and I sympathize with the feeling that it was all for naught. However, I also see it as the staff here(mainly Keith) deciding that before any MORE users were affected in RL it was time to just let it go. We will never have full disclosure and I'm ok with that. A lot of what happened really isn't our(the common users) business anyhow. Keith and the staff should feel free to run this site as they see fit. Beyond that, the poll was completely inaccurate as I have spoken to several people who voted to keep the cat and later changed their minds when things just got stupid around here...myself included. If I could have changed my vote I would have. The poll cannot be used as an argument(IMO) as so many people were completely ignorant of the details before voting and so many more of us thought it wasn't as serious as it ended up being when we cast our votes. I love dragons much more than cats so I am perfectly fine with the new item and hope that we as a community can move forward from this point and get back to what this site should be...FUN!!

first off, i'd like to say that this was a wise choice, though i believe it is a bit late in coming.

now, class, it's time for a lesson in the definition of terrorism. be sure to take notes.

terrorism is a method of warfare in which one side uses violence or the threat of violence to instill fear into the opposition in an effort to persuade the opposition into changing its viewpoint.

this is often done by targeting the masses, or "non-combatants" - in our case, users.

however, the chans never used violence or threatened violence. yes, their methods were heartless and they "terrorized" our forums, but they're not terrorists. they're a group of individuals who got ticked off at a specific series of events and used scare tactics on the masses in an attempt to have their demands met.

this isn't the bush administration. we did not "give in to terrorists" - i'm sorry, but one stupid little item over the security of everyone's accounts - both on subeta and elsewhere? i don't think there should even be a debate over that.

Anyone, anywhere, can find information about you online. If you put it out there. On free sites, there is no reason to use your real name, address, etc. It's not like that mail you things. If you put it out there, then it's kinda your own fault. Sorry to say.

I can "see it from both sides". I have an acquaintance off-site who is currently celebrating the *channer victory over Subeta very loudly.

That doesn't mean I believe that the actions taken were any less execrable. You can understand that kind of motivation without ennobling it.

Imo de final, I really think that trying to prove them evil of something nao is just.. pointless. If they feel unjust for what they did then I think theyve got the point now. If they dont then they dont and any mixture of logical wording isnt going to take down their morale. In WWI France and Britain dump absolute total guilt and bitterness onto Germany (prussia before Bismarck) for 'starting' that war; France tried to justify they were right, and look what comes rolling around, WWII besides Belgium neutrality. I srsly hate reffering to old stuff but this has gotten ridiculous. We have better things to do they have better things to do, trying to prove points now.. that side for one person isnt working. Thats my last naive opinion (because I can) on the part of Subeta vs 420.

Debilee - I've NEVER heard of chans. Ever. Not until this event, which I regret ever poking my nose into. I poked my nose into this too far, and my photobucket was ahcked, however, it wasnt changed into soem porn image like usual. They spared me, mainly because I didnt label them as terrorists and scum. Thank goodness Subeta decided to step up and take the high road. Though it took some time to get there Keeping the longcat on the site would have just caused more people, like myself, to reconsider playing and 'paying' for things here. Despite having nothing to do with this childish nonsense, I was still affected by the foolish messages, gore, porn and other mixed unmentionables in our mail and personal file hosting sites. It should never have gone that far in the first place and I am still, frankly, disgusted that it continued for so long. But now its done and we can move on at last.
