Computer Geek Quests: Shut down!

Melman has saved up enough from years of repairing computers to retire, and has shut down his quests! As a tribute other quest givers have a chance to give special themed items until February 7th!

I wonder how many users bother with Drunk Carl. And, Cinthia is fine now, but before the revamp, she and Carl were the 2 quests I wouldn't touch with a 39 and a half foot pole.

I understand what you're saying and that the site is continually changing and of course achievements retire all the time, but what I can't understand is how you guys can just suddenly make a change like this that is upsetting some users including myself without giving a warning. I was about 100 quests away from getting the 500 quests achievement so if you had given 7 days notice and I did all 20 quests, regardless of how much I spent, that's 140 quests and I'm sure there are others that were close like me. Giving us a warning would have encouraged us to do them if we really wanted the achievements and would it be so terrible to increase the number we could do a day for a few days just to try? What I also don't understand is, you guys give us warnings when items retire, when special shops close, etc but you can't give a warning for quests shutting down?

Then why add achievements to quests, if thats not what its for/about

This, basically. If achievements are for 'doing things you would normally do anyway' then they serve no purpose. Also I am PRETTY sure that nobody is just deleting Ethers for the fun of it. There is plenty of stupid and boring shit we do on this site solely for achievements, so if that wasn't your design when you implemented achievements, then you implemented them wrong,

I stopped achievement hunting long ago because of things like this. The frustration is not worth the reward.

I completed 823 Computer Geek quests. I don't really care about achievements that much, but the fact that that number isn't in a multiple of 5 just bugs me.

i bet that if he was revamped most still wouldnt do his quests - its just that now that they cannot do it anymore all of a sudden he gets important ??? i dont get it to be honest

few years ago we had the same drama with the legacy achievements - i missed alot of those too -

if subeta does not make changes and leaves everything like it is - they get complaints that it is "getting boring" to do the same over and over again

if subeta does something new: they get all the complaints that every change is too soon - to quick - not announced

sighs some seem to forget its only some pixels, a virtual world to relax a bit

what if tomorrow the site would just go off line ??? a site can be taken down just as it is !!!! in a finger click

Farewell, Geek Quests. I'll miss your WQ. It's dangerous to go alone, so, here, take a chopstick. On the other and,I need this shirt ç Are these items wineable with ALL questers or only revamped ones ?

Ahahahhahahahahaha wooooooooooow. For the record, some of us only do a small amount to cover over time because it's usually nothing more than a loss and we can't really afford it, as we are working towards many other sp heavy things. So the fact we could work towards it over a longer coarse of time was great. But who really cares, right ?

"If a feature isn't used, we are going to remove it"

What does that mean for the auction house then? Some of us are trying to breathe life into it, but now I'm wondering if you're going to ax it too?

Flux - You can choose to take it however you want. Very few users were doing these quests, they didn't make sense in the scheme of the quests in general and there was no immediate way to change them that would make sense / still be profitable or useful for users. We removed a feature that very few (< 5% of) active users used, and the achievements were retired with that feature. I'm not being insulting, I'm using the data that we've got available. Unfortunately we can't account for "waiting for quest to be revamped with a feature that was released a few months ago" as a method for determining how popular features are, or where they fit in.

If we'd given a weeks notice, most people wouldn't have been able to get much further in their achievements. The site is going to continue changing, there are going to be achievements that you can't get, etc. I'm not calling you (or anyone) lazy, just saying that the site is going to continue to change. If a feature isn't used, we are going to remove it, regardless of how many people really super wish they'd been able to get an achievement that has been there for years :).

Meh. No big deal, really.

I support you Keith. If these quests/achievements were THAT important, they would have been completed. I'll be first to say I rarely did his quests so it's no skin off my back.

That's what the Bits and Bytes store was for I thought? Why couldn't've you had him ask for items from that shop to make that shop useful for something? Geek could easily have been revamped to ask for items solely from that shop. It's a pretty useless shop otherwise.

To be honest I'm really not surprised or bothered that Geek quests were closed down. There are way too many quests to guarantee there's a USP for each; there's just too much overlap between them imo. And it's not the first time a quest has been closed down either.

Since he's a geek, and has shown that as well, you could have also expanded it so that he asked for collectibles, like cards, stickers, plushies, and beanbags.

He gave out good SP sometimes, I did the quests often... Have all the achieves, in fact. But on the other hand I can see why staff thought him redundant. I do think that some warning could have been given.

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by FLUX
User Avatar

This is beginning to get insulting. Essentially, you are saying that you closed these quests down because the whole user base is just lazy. People didn;t do the quests beforehand because there were more popular quests that gave better payouts, were new users or simply didn't like questing. But there were obviously people who did like these quests, and there were LOTS of people waiting for the revamp to complete his achievements. Perhaps it should have been mentioned a while ago that there was the possibility of achievements being retired, even if you didn't direct us to which quest it was going to be.

Yes his quest has been around for year, but there are also close to if not more than 2,000 other achievements on the site people are working for. Just because we haven't gotten all of his achievements yet doesn't mean we don't care to do his quests and get the achievement, it's because we're hustling to try and get as many different achievements as possible before the retire. Some achievements literally take months to get even if a user works every single day to get them so I find the answer of "well you guys don't care about his achievements if you waited this long" unacceptable and invalid.

I'm not sure what I think of all these changes lately. It's a bit too much I think, so maybe you guys can slow down on changes for at least a little while so people can actually get used to them or something :(

, this sucks. You want to close quests down, fine. How about giving people really trying to finish the quests a little courtesy? Is that so much to ask? The suggestion of upping the quest limit and giving say a month's warning is a good one. Right now I'm about ready to quit quests entirely. What's the point if you're going to jerk the rug out from us willynilly?

I mean I totally get that achievement-collectors are bummed, but I've seen it stated several times that the subeta team is striving to make this site all about a story/user interaction rather than just a do quest->get achievement->repeat forever kinda site, you know? So while I get why some people are upset I think it's sorta adding to what makes subeta cool, you know??? idkdi idk I'm shutting up now I don't even know what I'm saying //sigh

And, he was shut down because very few users did his quests daily and we couldn't find a way to revamp him in a way that made sense. If he asked for computer parts they'd inflate because that is a super small pool of items, and it wouldn't have been worth it a week after a revamp. Right now he is asking for the same items that many other quests are asking for, and just didn't make sense in any sense.

I think the fact that no one here completed his quests enough for the achievements is an easy way to point out that no one did them.

His quests have been there for years, same with the achievements. If you haven&;t completed them yet, you weren&;t going to unless we told you to do them which isn&;t what achievements are for. Take this as a warning, there are likely to be more features shut down / folded into other features / achievements retired in the near future.

Actually, lots of people were waiting for him to be revamped since it's much easier to quest with the shop search links.

Keith- there was really no reason to shut his quests down. This wasn't like the plot where he dies or something. I, like apparently many others, were just waiting for the quest revamp as the old style was more annoying to complete.

It's not like I did zero of his quests... Idk, this just totally rubs me the wrong way and makes me not trust any of the tiered stuff on site if it can just disappear like that without logic or warning.
