At this point, I want them to be non-unique just to get it over with. :P Everyone gets their cake! If your tummy hurts after you eat it all, don&;t say you weren&;t warned. If you don&;t feel like working on your characters even after you get the perfect names you&;ve always wanted? Hate to say people called it, but... theycalledit.

There is A LOT in this original post I wanted to comment on, as I was getting this snippet. But I don't want to ... idk get in the middle of the whole thing. I don't have any real strong feelings about this.

I have the pet name Discordia, for my cat. But she was named when I was heavy in to Dark Tower, so why SHOULDN'T another fan of the series be able to make their fan pet?

Similarly ... I have my pet here, named for my other cat who passed away last year. His name was Tiger. His Subeta proxy is named Tiger.. (That is, if you look closely, Tiger. with a period at the end)

I shouldn't HAVE to ask someone to give me their name because I was eleven when I named my first cat something very generic. And I shouldn't feel like I'm going to be shit on if I don't do anything with the pet other than post a photo of my cat and cry a bit wtf my tummy isn't going to hurt because I got to remove a period from my pet's name.

(I'm sorry if I'm reading the original post wrong, but it really reads to me like you have to EARN a name and like ... why, my dude?)

I'm kind of on the fence for non-unique pet names (I'm lazy and link my pets using the pet/(pet name) link - I'm not keen on having to remember the ID or get the pets page to load just to find out what the ID is to link the pet :P), but nicknames would be a good compromise, especially if they were able to still be linked with the pet/(pet name) option, so I wouldn't have to remember all those IDs! :P

I mean I've already given

11 a 'nickname' in that the pet's name had nothing to do with the characters I'd based his story on, so it was worked into his story to explain it. And there are a couple of pets of mine which have names that aren't really what I was wanting, like the one based on my previous budgie (unfortunately I'd chosen a common name for my bird, so there was no way I'd be able to get that name for him). I don't know that I would use a nickname for my budgie's pet on here (it's still hard to look at his profile), but it would be nice to know that I could have his 'real' name on there as a nickname if I wanted to.

But as for "we're really starting to run out of good names here" - sorry, but I'll need convincing on that one. I've managed to get some pet names 12 hours after they cleared, and I've seen others that were available for what seemed like days before they were created. Although maybe I just have a different idea of what makes a "good name" to the bulk of the Subetan population though ;)

@ squid Nah, we're cool! That was me having a little cheeky moment regarding a point in the other topics about petnames that more or less went "it'll inspire people to work on their pets more/get more interest in the pets community!" :')

Creative burnout is a thing. If you get ALL THE THINGS, all of them, all at once, you're gonna get burned out if you don't pace yourself. And then you're back at stage 1 with lacking the will to do anything with your pets because now you have the things you wanted, but you're also overwhelmed by everything before you've even started. Kinda also what happens when you eat a whole cake you've been looking forward to for ages, hence the cake comparison. Sugar rush! Sugar crash! Food coma. 😩

It's def not my call what someone else does, or how many real names they get if they're made non-unique. Just trying to point out that non-unique pet names won't do much for a lack of motivation, inspiration and time. Someone else might have 10, 20, 40, 80+ characters that they're going to have to rename, and others that they now have to save up for and want to bring over to the site and make all the art and stories and- yeah. I don't think I need to go on. Sweet suffering? Ohyep.

And on the topic of "omg why are you not doing anything with a good petname" (re: owning "good" names)... YEAH. YEAH THAT THERE IS HORSESHIT AND I DO NOT LIKE IT. I do not like people being dragged for that onsite or offsite. I get being disappointed that someone has an amazing name and did buggerall with the pet (hi hello, 100% guilty of doing buggerall w/my pets), but... it's their pet. This is also a big reason why I personally don't feel motivated to work on my pets. You're always going to have that one wiseass somewhere going "ughhhhh wow, she did such a shitty job with that pet, I wish I had that petname so I could do it better." (fwiw that's kind of the same vibe I get when someone asks me for a petname. 8'| Yeah I am def reading too far into a polite inquiry, but it still doesn't bring good feels.)

If you want your cat's real name for a tribute with a "good" name, I say godspeed. Your pet, your call, your decision to have it as a tribute. Neither me, nor anyone else has any say in it (except that he was an adorable baby and that we're sorry for your loss).

re: me saying I want it to be implemented just to get it over with I've seen both sides in the topics that popped up about this recently. I've seen points from both sides, I've talked to friends about it offsite and everyone's points are valid. Yes, even the people who "earned" the petnames by taking a day off of work/school, staying up really late, or asking their friends to help during a clearing. Even the people who want to have something unique that nobody else has. I'm tired of users getting salty with eachother because one side wants the current system to stay, the others are like "no, you're the problem, your opinion doesn't matter gtfo"

Tl;dr - the only reason why I was against non-unique names is the fallout from the userbase if it gets implemented too hastily. If they can sort things out so that: a) the old, paying userbase who likes their unique pets doesn't leave b/c subeta is not at the point where it can happily sustain itself on new users alone b) the site doesn't beg for death when/if this goes live & c) that the people who paid real cash for renames and jumped through hella flaming hoops to get the name (taking a day off work, making a mad-detailed app, etc) don't feel fucked over to the point of leaving? 👌 Heckin' count me in for the Non-Unique Petname team.

I could get behind the idea of nicknames. You still have to link your actual pet's name, but if you have a nickname for them, it shows up on their profile. That sounds like a wonderful compromise.

Since my thread got locked for being considered a duplicate, I'll post the same thing I wrote there here.

I know this is a delicate topic for a lot of people on this site, but this really needs to be addressed. I saw this topic ">here and it got me thinking.

Unique naming is unfair.

Yes, I know pet names are cleared often. Yes, I know some people think there isn&;t a name shortage. But what is this system really doing for the community?
From my point of view, nothing useful. The people who manage to get the good names, the nice-sounding names, get to boast about their good names while other people are left out of this circle of one.

Now, what&;s the issue with having multiple pets with the same name?

It might hurt the feelings of a few people. But remember, that same people are the ones who don&;t want to give up their unique names for a pixel pet on a site. Does it sound harsh? If it does, please rethink. A duplicate name does absolutely nothing to devalue the name your gave to your pet. It does not take your pet from you, it does not change anything about the pet that you personally own. You can still keep your tribute pet, your fan pet, your pet for remembrance of the loved one in your life. When you insist on keeping the unique naming system, you are negating that same feeling of relief, happiness, anything you felt when you thought about creating your tribute pet from other people.

Now you might say, have people pay for this! That&;s fair, right? Except it&;s not. That excludes people who don&;t have money from getting the name they want.

Before I go off on a tangent here, let me finish with this: Subeta loses almost nothing by implementing a duplicate naming system. Maybe a few people will whine, but in the long run, it will be better.

Tricks are overrated. Treats, please.
