What a spook-tacular round! I can hear the echo of Halloween right around the corner... No, wait, that's not Halloween... it's round 4!

If music be the food of love -- or fashion -- play on! For this round, you'll need to craft a design based off the song of your choice. Though you may use as many models as you like, their outfits should form one cohesive design centered around a single song. Please post your design alongside a link to the song (don't forget to include common warnings, such as violence or sexual content) and a few lyrics that you think really shine alongside your design.
Restrictions: Each model must be wearing exactly one cash shop item. (Excludes starting eyes, lips, nose, tattoos/freckles, etc.)
Due date: October 15 (midnight of that day)
Their starting eyes are also a cash shop item - zoe daze eye cream - but they have chosen to wear a different eye item so this does not matter. However, if they had chosen to wear a different cash shop item as eyes - such as one of the delish line - they would not have been able to use the cigarette, because while an integral part of their face, this different eye item is not one they started with.
For the purposes of this round, a "cash shop item" is one with a rarity of 125.
caveats to song choice - read this
Please do not pick any songs by: Purity Ring, Sufjan Stevens, Cake Bake Betty, The Oh Hellos, any song from the Sweeney Todd musical, any song from Little Shop of Horrors.
Please do not pick these specific songs: Help I'm Alive by Metric, The North by Stars, Future Starts Slow by The Kills, In All My Dreams I Drown by The Devil's Carnival. Other songs by these bands are fine.
These are songs that are triggers for me for reasons I'm not going into and I would very much like to be able to enjoy your entry without having a Bad Time (tm).
Please also do not pick a song with explicit depictions of gore in the lyrics, as specified in the rules on the first page. If the song you pick has gore in the music video but not the lyrics, please just link to a video other than the music video. Nonexplicit violence/nongorey violence is just fine, as in Lotus's example. A good rule of thumb for what is explicit violence is would you see this in a Star Wars, Harry Potter, mainstream Marvel movie (the PG-13 ones), or similar movie you would let your 12yo cousin watch, if the answer is yes then it's probably fine. I have the gore tolerance of a 12yo.
Also please observe tagging common triggers with your song link, some examples: violence, domestic violence, sexual content, blood, flashing lights, ear or eye strain, very loud noise or jumpscares, common phobias such as spiders or scary clowns, or self harm or suicide. Of course there are more than these, just use common sense. This applies to both the lyrics and the video. If your lyric snippet requires a warning, please put it under a spoiler.
I realise this is a lot of extra rules/guidelines, I just don't want to ruin anyone's day. Thank you for your patience.
Please note that you CAN use things that are on the weird peripherial edges of what is usually considered music, such as backwards/literal versions of songs, harsh noise, remixes of speeches/interviews/commercials, songs playing in another room, this monstrosity (warning: ear strain), or whatever catches your fancy. All the judges were hyped for this round, so ya'll get three different entry examples. (Please note that your entry should only use one song; this is examples of three different entries, not one with three models.)
Patriarch on a Vespa by MetricFizbee's design
fizbee fiapby kylonaberrie
Mx Maunders had this to say about their design:
"I have an extremely eclectic music taste. Soft rock, hard rock, folk, folk punk, classical, whatever you call that genre where it's a girl with a nice voice and a piano -- you name it. But the other two went for positively delicious femme fatals as inspirations, and I couldn't be left in the dust, so here we are.
I adore this song, and I did my best to represent it well-- it's a highlight of sexism and the passive acceptance thereof, with a few choice scathing lines crammed in considering it has all of two and a half verses. My outfit is based on "Promiscuous" as a character: the bad girl. The one who dares defy, who dares question. Someone's attempted to dress her up the way they want but those nice white linens never do seem to stay clean for long.
It can be so, so tiring fighting the entire world. I am womanhood with torn stockings and a thousand-yard stare. I've lived the very same. But we get up and fight, darling. What other choice do we have?"

Mr Finch had this to say about his design:
"I know Fizbee got political, but I decided to take a break from reality and just do something with a nice beat. Okay, it's a song about the futility of fame and the insatiable and uncaring celebrity machine, but I'm trying my best here.
This song always makes me think of a starlet struggling to stay afloat in an uncaring industry. They're very aware of what this is doing to them and to others, and what the future holds for them: at best, sinking into anonymity. They're jaded and cynical. And yet, it's bittersweet - as the ending bridge states, it's a love song. It's a love song to something terrible that highlights every part of how terrible it is. And yet it's a love song nonetheless, and the singer blames themself as it "comes out a lament." It's self awareness and acceptance at once. And I suppose that appeals to me. Say what you will about what that says about my psyche.
The chorus, on first listen, sounded to me like it was said to a lover, but by now I feel it's to fame, which in the context of the song, is a lover in itself. It's a lover the singer can't bring themself to give up no matter how callous and hurtful. They stand in awe before this glittering monument to human carelessness and folly, and what they feel is love. Is that not the truest form love can take? Love of every part of something, even with full knowledge of its flaws and victims?
I chose to represent this in the form of a wistful starlet; in the form of tears and a soft smile."

Cut off Their Thumbs by the Mountain Goats
Ms Swordswizard had this to say about her design:
"There are a lot of things I love in this world, but pretty high up there are the Mountain Goats and stories that feature sudden violence inexplicable to everyone but the perpetrator. And guess what this is!
For real though, I dig every part of this song. It's not really about the violence. It's not about who is doing this or why. It only sets the scene and the tone, and that amount of information coupled with what we don't know says everything. The scene says this is a day like any other. The tone says this is a calm and inevitable crime. And between the two, a perfect picture of this murderer comes to mind for me. They have friends, a family, hobbies, a life. They're a dumb late-teens doing dumb things with their friends. They're ordinary, until they aren't. And there's only the slight, sarcastic cynicism in some of the lyrics to prepare you for the killing blow.
So what caused them to snap? Well. They even said themself: they don't know. Your guess is as good as theirs. And that's what makes this song so chilling: nothing's going to be explained to you. Either you don't understand, or you do.
Empathy doesn't make you a serial killer, babes. Only like, actually serial killing can do that. Psychopath tests can go take a long walk off a short pier, etc. But if you know, you know. I know I do.
In addition to capturing the person like any other look, I made an effort to capture the vibe of the song in the design too: it always sounds kind of pale to me, cream and yellow, and dingy. Probably the descriptions of the room in the beginning, though the calm violence helps. Calm violence is yellow to me. And it was integral to me that you can't see their eyes: you can't see what they're thinking, can't see their motivations, their emotions. The only window you have to their soul is what you see reflected in your own." so this theme definitely isn't just an excuse for me to wax poetic about my favourite songs and see yall do the same, nope
finally got the scores for round 3 up! y'all really knocked this one out of the park - highest overall scores so far!
Truffula's Scores
Fizbee says: 10/10
This is straight up amazing. It's beautiful, it's well put together, it's just shiny. Nothing is without detail, there's nowhere I can look and not be delighted with and interested in what I find. The internal coordination is fantastic; the focal points balance perfectly. And even though they appear to not have much in common on the surface, they look lovely beside each other and compliment each other well.
Magnus says: 10/10
This has to be one of the most professional looking entries I've seen so far. Everything is perfectly coordinated, in both colour and shape. The eye drags across each perfectly. And the shapes: the upside down and rightside up semi-circles of the cloak and the tail. I can't even find fault in the two costumes not having much to do with each other. I want to stare at this for hours.
Lotus says: 10/10
You took a fairly simple concept and breathed so much life and shape into it. I LOVE it. I love love love it. I love the mirrored semicircles, I love the fact that I feel like I just walked into a costume party. They don't have much to do with each other, but who cares? You still clearly had a direction you were aiming for, and you wound up somewhere beautiful because of it.

Fizbee says: 10/10
This is real cute. You got that pre-Halloween groove going on. And I'm really impressed by how well you matched your oranges and blacks! Blacks are hard to match! The outfits all feel like they belong together without any obvious common threads other than fitting the theme. Romeo's outfit is simple but dashing, and the others are just plain cute. I would ask where the hell Kat's pants are, but you know what? It's a look!
Magnus says: 9/10
I agree with Fizbee that this is quite attractive, and there's no real fault with it. I feel like there's room for more detail, but at the same time, these are appealing enough in their simplicity. Like Fizbee said, there's a visual similarity between them that I can't quite put my finger on, and I appreciate that. I also like Romeo as a halfway point between an entirely orange and two entirely black outfits. These are all charming and handsome designs.
Lotus says: 5/10
These are cute alright, but where's the interest? The pizzazz? You hit the nail on the head themewise, but there's nothing besides that driving the concept. They're just all typical October. I'd really like to see something more complex! Ramora's outfit at least is pretty snazzy, but there's so much blank canvas on Kat and Romeo.

Fizbee says: 10/10
These are adorable. They've each got their own look going on, and are also all super polished to boot. You can tell just by looking that so much thought went into each one. The colour palettes are so on point; each one is engaging and beautiful. I like that all of them have a vertical element, in the sleeves or wings or trailing sweater. They're like little delicious pieces of candy, all packaged up nice and glossy with sugar. I just want to-- ((Magnus swats Fizbee on the arm and hisses something unintelligible)) pop them in my mouth. ((Fizbee giggles.)) What did you think I was going to say, Magnus? Anyway, well done sweetheart.
Magnus says: 10/10
As Fizbee said, these all look extremely polished. You went extremely broad with your subject, but I feel like you managed to pull it off. I like the flower crowns as a common thread, as well as the shapes, the dangling fabric and small horizontal accents. They're all very beautiful and each stands very well on its own, while getting along quite well being displayed together-- like cousins, perhaps.
Lotus says: 10/10
I'm of two minds on this: I like that you went broad, but also, is it too much? I agree with Magnus that you kind of went off in three different directions, but really, I think it works. You had a vision, you went for it, ya pulled it off. You took our theme and decided to cover all of it, and that's rad. And I really like that all three designs had nature as an inspiration.
Total: 30/30
Your total score is now 80. You are in 3rd place.
Rox's Scores
Fizbee says: 9/10
Glitz! Glam! Fluffy things! I think Rogan's outfit is a little much; the layering is off in places and the scythe doesn't quite match the rest of her outfit. But other than that, no complaints. In fact, I think it's all rather excellent. I love the slinky black dresses and all the pearls and shiny bits. And all the lace! It's all very Victorian Gothic, with that sort of elegance and delicateness and attention to detail.
Magnus says: 7/10
The one detractor for me is also Rogan's outfit: the other two have a definite visual similarity, and Rogan is a lot busier and poofier. If the others were a little less well matched it might work, but they're very similar and Rogan stands out. Furthermore, her blacks just don't quite match the others. But I do like the looks overall: the formality, the opulence, once again the mother and daughters look. This looks like something that could be from a Halloween film.
Lotus says: 9/10
I feel like you could've gone a little more off the beaten path, but also, you rocked the hell out of the beaten path. You clearly had a vision with the three different categories of spooky, while keeping them all centered with the horns and the black and the drapey things. I also think the faux medieval/Victorian/Edwardian/whatever look works really well with the fact that they're demons, like, of course demons are all old fashioned and stuff. It's cute, it's cool, thumbs up.
Total: 25/30 Your total score is now 72. You are in 4th place. [spoiler=Valiska's Scores]Fizbee says: 10/10

Jackson - Johnny Cash
Lyrics
Lyrics
We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout,
We've been talkin' 'bout Jackson, ever since the fire went out.
I'm goin' to Jackson, I'm gonna mess around,
Yeah, I'm goin' to Jackson,
Look out Jackson town.
Well, go on down to Jackson; go ahead and wreck your health.
Go play your hand you big-talkin' man, make a big fool of yourself,
Yeah, go to Jackson; go comb your hair!
Honey, I'm gonna snowball Jackson.
See if I care.
When I breeze into that city, people gonna stoop and bow. (Hah!)
All them women gonna make me, teach 'em what they don't know how,
I'm goin' to Jackson, you turn-a loose-a my coat.
'Cause I'm goin' to Jackson.
"Goodbye, " that's all she wrote.
But they'll laugh at you in Jackson, and I'll be dancin' on a Pony Keg.
They'll lead you 'round town like a scalded hound,
With your tail tucked between your legs,
Yeah, go to Jackson, you big-talkin' man.
And I'll be waitin' in Jackson, behind my Jaypan Fan,
Well now, we got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper Sprout,
We've been talkin' 'bout Jackson, ever since the fire went.
I'm goin' to Jackson, and that's a fact.
Yeah, we're goin' to Jackson, ain't never comin' back.
Well, we got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout'
And we've been talkin' 'bout Jackson, ever since the fire went...
Kat felt this song would be good because her and Romeo are married after all. Though Bubbles does not plan on taking her man she could easily dress the part to fit in with the song. Kat always loved to make wedding designs and why not make a design around her and her husband getting married again, even if he was gonna try to be a player in Jackson.

Del was inspired by the song "Blue Moon" which was written by Rodgers and Hart in 1933 for a scene in a movie where Jean Harlow, playing a girl who wanted to be a Hollywood star, was praying for her dreams to come true. The song was popularized by being performed by Elvis Presley in 1954; that's the version Del likes.
Emma is costumed as Del's imagination of the religious young woman who prayed to be a star, and Jacob as the Elvis Presley type performer making the song rock.

details and links
Rather than link to a video of the song or anything, I'm linking to the Wikipedia article about the song. That's because it was the real inspiration. I'm much more intrigued by the history and story behind a song than I am by music, any kind of music. It's a personal failing, perhaps, but I felt it was within the spirit of the challenge.

Callista Zabini says: "For this entry, I'm going back to some of my earliest inspirations--the magical girl comics and animated series I used to read and watch as a child with my older sister Fiammetta. I'm using the song 'Kisekae' (which means to play Dress-Up) by Kyary Kyary Pamyu. This is a song that has a lot of personal meaning for me, as a new fashion designer just entering the world of Japanese street fashion. Unfortunately, since most of you don't know Japanese, the translated lyrics won't sound exactly the way the original lyrics do, but I'm hoping you can still get the feeling.
My friend KIRIN is playing the part of a Japanese schoolgirl who meets up with a young witch--played by me--who transforms her into a magical girl of her dreams. For the transformed dress I have deliberately made my items in an older style, more reminiscent of a cartoon and less realistic. My friend Paz represents the Rose Prince who comes to aid her in her quests to save his mother, who is played by my friend Liana, representing the queen of the far future fairyland that they have to save."
She flips through the pages and worries about every little thing A little witch girl who wants to master her imagination, her magic But Mommy knocks on the door and scolds her to go to bed Let’s watch the rest of it in dream land, in dream land

I’m still just an apprentice, but one day in this town I’ll show you something spectacular– hocus pocus Look, let’s your change your clothes in the wink of an eye Gonna bewitch you with my transformation magic, so

I’m gonna be a whole new me Romantic, dramatic, not just cute

I’ll be a new person, with brand new feelings Romantic, dramatic mysteries, not dreams

Gonna be someone different, let’s go to a whole new world Plastic, fantastic, where I can be free

well done on the last round! all those designs are gorgeous. sorry about the wait for round 5! here it is.

SPOILER (click to toggle)
Round 5: Two Sides of the Same Coin
Yin and yang, light and dark, Mori and Nori -- so many opposites depend on each other to even exist. For this round, make a pair of designs that are both related and opposite.
Restrictions: Must use exactly 2 models
Deadline: October 29th by midnight Restriction explanation: the only restriction is using two and only two models, other than that you can do what you want.

This round's example obviously needed two of our illustrious hosts to work together! Mx Maunders had this to say about the design:
"The obvious contrasts that lept into my mind at first were black/white and masculine/feminine, though I realised the far superior option once I started sketching out designs: Spy vs Spy. So I incorporated all three, and dragged Magnus into it. Actually he had quite a hand in the overall looks, traditional formal wear is more his forte than mine. What can I say, sometimes I do need a handsome strong man to--" ((They break off giggling, apparently unable to even finish the sentence, and keep laughing as they keep talking.)) "Who am I kidding, it was my idea and I claim all credit."
Magnus, rolling his eyes, had this to add:
"Fizbee's kidding you all that it was an artistic choice to recruit me. I mean, yes, I pull this off way better than Lotus would, but Fizbee and I went to highschool together. My husband and I were also friends at that point, and people called us Spy vs Spy because he was so pale and always dressed in light colours, and I was at least a little bit goth back then."
Fizbee: "Just back then?"
Magnus: "I occasionally still lean into gothic or Victorian styles, yes, but I'm not committed to any true goth subgenre." ((He brushes a stray hair of his impressive quaff back into place.)) "Anyway, this design was a personal wink at me because you constantly insist on being obnoxious."
Fizbee: "You know it." ((They wink and hold up one finger gun and one prop gun at Magnus.))
scores time! sorry about the wait.

Oh, this is so lovely. It's got the perfect balance of detail: enough to be interesting, but not so much to be busy. I love the bits of symbolic gold jewellery: the crosses for Emma, the stars for Jacob, and that both of the designs center around blue just like the blue moon in the song. You've got some simply delectable balance and matching going on in terms of other colours, too. It's all so beautiful, I could stare at it while gently swaying to this song for hours.
Magnus says: 10/10
This is so perfect. It's well polished, it's attractive, everything is so well matched, and your choice of individuals to represent the song is spot-on. Not only does Emma's outfit perfectly combine the religious aspect with the look of a movie star, Jacob's outfit captures the tone of the song, the dreamy late-night feeling, in addition to the look you were going for.
Lotus says: 10/10
I ADORE the direction you took the two looks in. They don't match the typical colour schemes associated with those roles at all - normally you would think of a religious girl in pure white, and an Elvis type in that light blue or studded white suit - and yet they retain enough of the style to capture the looks perfectly, not to mention, as Magnus mentioned, the colours you did choose fit the "blue moon" aspect of the song wonderfully. You've really made these looks, and this song, your own.

This is quite nice, and I like what you've laid down. The colours all work very well together and I think they all suit their roles in the song perfectly. I especially like Romeo's boots, I think they give the design a nice southern touch. But it's those little touches I could've used more of, some extra accessories, some added visual interest. It's charming, but a little plain.
Magnus says: 8/10
I like the design overall, I think it's quite simple but it conveys the tone of the song well. Kat makes a good hurried bride, just the basics, but the flow of her skirt and her veil work quite well together. Bubbles is very cute and absolutely fills the part of arm candy. But I agree with Fizbee that I feel like Romeo's outfit is missing something, maybe another accessory, or another tie in with the silver boots. I'd also have liked to see him with some different hair for this round, something a little more down home to match the song.
Lotus says: 7/10
I see what you've got here, but I don't think you followed through all the way. Some designs carry plain well, and I agree with Magnus that Kat in this case does, but I feel like you need to push your designs further. Give us a little more detail! I think your song choice is great though, same with your choice of characters in it to represent.

This is darling! You picked a really fun song for this, and I love all the outfits, though Jaime's scans a little weirdly to me. Her hair is so big compared to the others', and kind of overbalances her outfit. Overall, though, I still think it's a very good set of outfits. I like how all the ladies have fancy tights and lots of ornate lace, and Julien really does look like he crawled out of the bayou. His makeup is just amazing.
Magnus says: 10/10
This was a great, visceral song choice, with a clear story which you represented well. The designs are playful in a way that matches the tone of the song well. I really enjoy your one background singer in colour bordered by two in black and white. The suspenders are an obvious visual tie between them, but a very fitting one, and it works well.
Lotus says: 10/10
I like that you went for something a little less serious. I feel like you really captured the, uh, for lack of a better word, mouth feel of the song with your design. It's fun, it's vivid, it's both dark and colourful, and I like that you represented the main parties in the song in your models. As I listen to the song I can definitely imagine your models performing it! Also the log and fog machine doesn't count to your score as it's not a design, but I do think it's really clever.

Am I seeing triple? This is adorable! The matching skirt shapes, the sleeveless tops, the perfect colour matching, it's all wonderfully done. I especially like the matching berets with different white hair accessories, the similar (and eerily well matched!) hairstyles, and all the different uses of white and red and black. Well done~
Magnus says: 9/10
I agree with Fizbee that this is highly adorable. But other than the raspberry berets the models are sporting, I don't really see how it relates back to the song. However, it's still a very attractive design, so I haven't taken many points off. I especially like what you've done with the tights and shoes, and how the different parts of the colour scheme show up in different places. The matching effect is very cute while each model is distinct enough for the look not to be boring, and each outfit remains cute on its own without relying on the set.
Lotus says: 8/10
I'm of two minds here, because I knew exactly what song you'd chosen as soon as I saw those little berets, and yet, I don't really feel like you remind me of the song other than literally? Which, of course, counts, but I'd have liked to see a few more tie-ins, like something more reminiscent of rock or disco, or an outfit that looks like it came entirely from that second-hand store. However, the vision you did go with is obviously super well planned out what with all perfect matching, so kudos for that.

Fizbee says: 9/10
This is adorable! I love your use of different styles to help tell the story, and how the fairyland designs are all so ruffly and the middle three are very visually similar. However, I feel like the queen stands apart a bit? She's a bit more subdued, which does convey a sense of more maturity and regalness, but also makes her not quite click with the other three. Overall, though, I think it's a fantastic and fun design, and it goes with the upbeat bubblegum pop song perfectly.
Magnus says: 9/10
I agree with Fizbee on all fronts - this is such a cute and peppy design for a cute and peppy song. I can imagine a music video for it starring your models perfectly. My one complaint is I feel like the colours don't match on all fronts -- KIRIN's pre-transformation look, as well as the queen, have different colour palettes from the rest of the designs, and in my opinion Paz's makeup is too dark for their outfit. However overall the designs mesh well enough to create a cohesive story, and what a story it is.
Lotus says: 10/10
I love that you've chosen to tell a story via your design, and I especially love you using KIRIN to model two designs as part of that. (It's technically not against the rules! God I love seeing technicalities exploited.) Also the intentional change in style is brilliant, and you handled it super well. It's just a really fun idea and a really fun song, and I love it.
Total: 28/30 Your total score is now 117. You are in 1st place. The person with the highest score this round is Truffula. Congrats, your design was dazzling!

Rogan Phoenix models a demonic dark black outfit. While Charlay Stone is modeling an angelic light white outfit.
Del really was stuck on ideas for this round. Finally they came up with one that they liked, but then they didn't really love the outfits that sprang from it. Still, they felt committed to continuing the contest, so here's the idea.

For print and ink, the primary colors are cyan, magenta, and yellow. For light and pixels, they're red, green, and blue. When you combine cyan, magenta and yellow inks, ideally you'll get black; when you combine red, green and blue light, you get white light.
Del has dressed Jacob to model the RGB color primaries and Vivian to model the CMY color primaries. When they made Vivian's outfit, they had it pointed out that those were "unicorn colors" nowadays. To add to the similar/opposites theme, then, Del added a lion/unicorn concept to the hairstyles and props.
A white lion and black unicorn were used to pull in the color scheme symbols.
Vivian, please put your phone down, you're supposed to be modeling?
Vivian's outfit has a little of the art student feel to it, a comics colorist perhaps, as she's modeling the colors of paint, ink, etc.
Jacob's outfit is more of a film student thing, a director of short films maybe, since his primary palette is for light projection... okay, Del says, I know it's a stretch, but these colors are a headache to work with. Del grins and they decide it's better to call it a night. Final word and all that.

Callista Zabini says: "People like to think of the arts and sciences as being wholly separate from one another, but they're not. Beauty in nature, artifice and design is described by mathematics and revealed to us through the endless forms most beautiful of biological evolution. And in physics and mathematics, the most elegant solution to a problem is often the best one. Music, architecture, engineering and design all depend equally upon artistic intuition and scientific thinking. Tonight my good friends Liana Kujaku, a mathematician, and Benedetto, a street artist, join me in bringing to you the Art of Science and the Science of Art."
