I think the conversation is relevant to this thread because this is the Battle chat, and the topic in question is regarding the Battle guide. Honestly not sure where else to converse. The guide is an incredibly relevant thread, and very visible to the community. It's honestly some of the best information available regarding battling. Every up and coming battler is likely to view it at some point. And just because it hasn't come up before, doesn't mean that potential battlers haven't been turned off by it in past. So maybe, just maybe, we shouldn't include slurs of the word "whore."

I just did a quick scroll through, and 99% of that guide is helpful, factual information. But then there's that 1%, which is honestly quite jarring if you're reading through. It honestly has no purpose in that guide. Everything else is describing current site behavior or providing well researched advice. Why does it have to be there? Meanwhile, there are obviously a number of people who [I]do[/I] find it troubling. I've personally been called "whore" enough times in my life that I don't really support the continued propagation of the term, let alone on an informational guide. No, it's not the worst term that could be used, but that's not really a good reason to keep it around. Likewise I don't think it matters much who originally included it- it's not relevant to the content of the guide.

So, I'd like to hear your perspective. I simply don't understand.

really sorry to anyone i unintentionally offended, since i saw it in the battle guide and i wasn't going to read through ~140 pages I thought it was just acceptable terminology, and I don't mean to throw under the bus with this statement either (so please don't take it that way metroid! didn't know people would have a reaction, but i'm not undermining anyones reaction)

Hey- you're totally cool! Please don't fret! I think there's just this reaction because it kind of went unnoticed for a long time, and it's a bit jarring. (Especially because I don't think I've ever heard that nickname before.)

There might be some weight to the natural divide between who is likely to be reading the guide (often newbies), and who often posts in this chat (typically not total newbies, as it can take a bit of courage to actually speak up in a crowd of highly experienced folks).

So I think people were mostly just surprised. And absolutely no one is mad at you or anything! We're all just having a conversation, is all. :)

yeah i think it's because i've been on subeta for 11 years, i'm not a newbie in the sense of "wah subeta ppl scare me" but i an newb in the sense that in the 11 years ive been on this site my highest pet is tier 3 LMAO i just want to actually get into it now, since ...idk. That's a good goal - having a buff pet is the best! And I hope this experience hasn't put you off from coming back in the future. Typically we're very laid back. But I'm not surprised that lurking beneath our tough battle exteriors are equally tough interiors ;)

Long time lurker wanting to throw my two cents in - I would have thought that people finding something offensive and asking for it to be changed was a good enough reason to change it? You don't have to agree with them to understand that they find it uncomfortable. It's a sexist slur that is never used as anything except a sexist slur, and changing it would cost you nothing and be a nice thing to do.

On to other things, since I'm here - do you think I might be able to get 10 wins on Rouland this year?

My pet's t12, has around 4260 in every stat. (Couldn't decide on a build so just went for even.)

I've got a lot of the high end weapons (not Manifesting Weapon yet, obviously) but from guides I've read my most useful ones seem to be Maniacal Essence, Natasha and Swashbuckle. I have various blasters, blockers and healers, and pylonics.

I have 152 AP, I can get that up a couple of points probably but books are getting expensive for him now. I'm farming tomes from opponents but it's slow going.

Scroll-wise I have one each of The Void, Psycho Smasher, Gale Force, Gift of the Forj, Cobalt Eternal, Spacial Abyss, Aftershocks, Sonar Scream, Sancturia Exodin, Lucky, Typhoon of Valor, Fatal Fire, Assassin, Terra Focujin, Holy Deluge.

Might be able to afford multiples of one or two of them, might not.

No Shriek of Despair yet, Nightlady was very mean to me last year, hopefully I can get at least one from her this year.

Do I have a shot, do you think?

hm, I don't have that yet but it's been a little while since I last tried to fight Furious, maybe that would be doable now. My only magma block is Unstable Sample Syringe, I most need that and dark block if I remember right? I'll try and put together a trial set after my BQs.

To beat Meatslab it would help if you had a Cronus Blade. I would consider maybe lending if you replace the crystals. Or if you have a friend who can lend since I don’t really know you.

thanks for the offer but I wouldn't expect you to lend something that high end to a complete stranger. (I don't think I can afford to replace the crystals anyway, I'm assuming you have EoR on there and most of them are out of my budget right now - spent a lot on my set/scrolls recently).

It's okay, I'll get there eventually. Getting curbstomped by Furious still but if I can't beat Rouland with what I have then he'll wait until next year. Good to know I at least have a chance ^^

Summed up my thoughts beautifully! While that particular slur is one that I don't use, I often "get cute" with names of NPCs and challengers -- and I am guilty of often calling things by other than their real names. For example, Natasha is "Natty" or "pea shooter" and Prodigy is often referred to as "Ol Blue Ball" or "The Blue Ball of Frustration." While neither nomenclature is derogatory per se, I can see how some might find such terms off putting.

It is good for us to think twice about some of our verbiage, however ingrained into our culture. Bear in mind that habits change very slowly, and often it appears we take two steps back for each step forward. While I will reconsider some terms I have used in the past, I will not give ground on Chase. He will always be that **BBB to me.

**Hint: the last two Bs stand for "Blue" and "Bunny." If you think the first B stands for an offensive word, try thinking "Bad" instead. ;)

I hope you have a chance, because this is going to be my first year taking a real jab at him and my T12 has lower stats than yours. :) It looks like I'll have to borrow some weapons though because my dark blockers are lacking...

I can't really remember, but I might have gotten close to beating Rouland last year. Not entirely sure. But I'll definitely be giving it a try this year. Even 5 wins would be better than nothing (although 10 would be great :P).

I've made a list of the challengers and how many more wins I need to get the various prizes they give out. I've got some work to do, but it's something I can keep looking at now and then...will be doing BQs soon...I've been rather slack with them lately.

5 amulets from Quentin and I got 3 tomes from the Mage... nice. D:
