Mariners log: I had never seen anything so beautiful, and yet so terrible. I saw her hair first, swirling in the deep black of the waves, I called to the men but my voice was small and I knew, knew with a certainty that one only finds in dreams, that I had to be the one to save her. Securing the rope around the mast I tied two loops, one for my waist and the other for the girl whom I hoped to rescue. I had heard of sea maidens before, heard them described as monsters, but no whispered rumor or hushed fearful voice could have prepared me for what I found when my arm reached into the water....
