Eros looked to Fade as she gave a satisfactory answer. "Right," he nodded at the girl before surveying around at the others. "Daisy Pennifold invented the charm that's used for this, hence the name. Does anyone know the incantation for this charm?," Eros again paused for an answer.
Eros eyes focused to Magnus when the boy recited the incantation. "Good," the Slytherin smiled faintly at the lycan before addressing the whole group again. "This will slow down the velocity of the targeted object.
"We're all responsible for our own safety, but we should also be responsible for the safety of our peers. Despite having signed that waiver, nobody should be getting hurt today...if we can help it. In a real game, it's a real risk, but we're not playing a real Quidditch game today, or at all. The focus is building our flight skills. There shouldn't be any formality or any reason anyone should get seriously injured. With that said, Arresto Momentum. Learn it, memorize it. If you see someone on a crash course, whether falling or going way too fast towards something, help them out," Eros stopped for a moment and looked down towards the pools of mud below. "But as a secondary precaution, I've gone ahead and softened the ground in case anyone crashes or fall towards the ground...can't help ya if you run into a barrel, ring, or another student, though..."
"Alright, now onto the more interesting stuff." Eros turned to look at the obstacle course above the pitch. At the moment, it was just a bunch of stationary rings and barrels that went down and around the goals at the other end and then made a u-turn back. "As I said, we'll be starting off easy. You guys just have to make it through the course. There's a catch. We're here to improve our skills. When out on the pitch, it's easy to get disoriented if we're not flying right-side up. So, change of perspective for our first exercise," Eros smirked and then suddenly, he was hanging upside on his broom. "This is the Sloth Grip Roll. Normally used to avoid Bludgers. Some of you may be familiar with it if you ever played or seen a Quidditch game. For this course, you'll be flying through it entirely while hanging upside down. Easy, right? Consider this a warm-up to get the blood flowing to your head...literally. Oh, one more thing," Eros then pulled out his wand, pointing it out towards the obstacles. Suddenly , some of the rings and hollow barrels started to started to move either from side to side or up and down, each at varying speed. Another few of the rings, started spinning around their axis, some horizontally and others vertically...also at varying speed. He turned to look back at the group with a smile. "The object is just to finish, it's not a race...although, I can't help it if it you guys decide to make it one. Hang on, get through the course, and meet me back on the ground. "
in-dept obstacle course
Eros' first surprise of going upside down was a good one, sure he'd done a few short upside down maneuvers but nothing like this. That in of itself was a good challenge.... but then the moving targets that was going to even more challenging. Magnus hated to admit it, but Eros had a damn good course. It looked fun and a little daunting at the same time.
"So...er, who wants to go first?" Magnus said. It was only polite to ask right? Totally had nothing to do with letting someone else try before he did... totally.
Merlin felt like Eros was talking to him when he said not to fly with their eyes closed, but he knew he couldn't stay like that, it was a brief moment of enjoyment so he shrug it off. After his questions, others answered really fast so he didn't even bother to think the answers. Now he wasn't excited about the course of obstacles, flying upside down was something he has done, but not in a broom so he was hoping to do it right. Yet Merlin wasn't sure he could fly upside down while doing the obstacles. "Now I know why we signed those forms. Make sure to stare at me falling so you can say Arresto Momentum in time - I don't want to end up in the hospital wing growing bones. Or worse, in the mud. UGH!" He smiled at that since he was obviously joking but acted as he was serious. "If my hair gets muddy I will get you Eros, don't care if I signed that waiver." He had a mocking smile on his face and little after decided to first try flying upside down before trying any obstacle. "Magnus watch me, don't let me hit the mud!"
"Here goes." Merlin turned the broom upside down and the position didn't really bothered him, he was used to it but having to depend on a broom bothered him yet he trusted it will keep him off the floor. He flied a bit around and felt confused when he felt something he knew well, a rush of adrenaline running through his veins. "Woohoo! This isn't so bad Eros, better than normal flying I must say."
Merlin didn't speed much since there were other students around and he didn't feel in total control yet, so he mostly avoided Sauvage since she was the one he felt most uncomfortable in the air. "I'm going to try the obstacles, do you think I'm ready?"
((OOC: And anyone around I don't want to ping too much))
((hehe pinging Magnus xD)) "I'll do me best," he said with a slightly nervous tone. "Sure, why not?"
((OOC:ROFL you see what this does to me?))
Merlin was a bit nervous to start but someone had to, unless someone faster and more clever than him did it before he actually starts, he was going to be laugh on first- better to get over with it. The first obstacle seem easy enough, just a stationary ring, yet he couldn't say the same for the third obstacle up. "Tell my mom I love her!" Merlin speed up ahead and crossed the first obstacle easily, then the second - stationary barrels- easily as well, yet when he saw the moving ring he slow down and managed to cross, but almost got hit. So he thought he couldn't go that slow for the next. He speeds up to cross the next tricky ring but got hit by it before he could cross it. He lost control of the broom for a moment, yet luckily he was able to stop it faster than he imagined without the help of any enchantment. He went up again to try the next obstacle, which was another easy stationary ring, he thought the next was quite easy as well, yet the position was starting to bother him and felt a bit dizzy, so when he approached the ring that moved side to side, he took the wrong direction and ended up going down in high speed.
((lol it happens all the time xD))
Merlin was doing well. A couple of near misses made Magnus cringe. Then Merlin was going down, and fast and Magnus freaked. "Arresto Momentum," he called, waving his wand and pointing it at Merlin. Not waiting to see if it worked, he took off on his broom racing to help his friend.
Merlin felt a pull, something holding his fall and it gave him time to recover. "Thank you!" He said to whoever saved him, and then he saw Magnus rushing toward him. "It was you right? Thanks buddy, I guess I suck." He laughed. "I won't give up and would try again, but after someone else goes - I need a break my head is spinning."
Magnus' heart was beating so fast but he was thankful Merlin recovered. "You're fine, it could 'appen to anyone. You okay?"
"Yes, I'm perfectly fine. Thanks to you." He smiled. "Why don't you try it now so I can learn."
"You mean so you can learn from my 'orrible death?" he said with a nervous chuckle. He steeled himself, if he did it, it would show others they could do it.
Upside down, gripping his broom very tightly, he went through the first and stationary ring. It wasn’t so bad, so he felt better. The wind wiping at his face as he went through the barrels. The sliding rings were slow, so the boy edged forward going slowly, determined to get through them. He did, though miss-gauged the height of the ring and the bottom hit his back. Thankfully it wasn’t too bad because of how fast they weren’t going. The next one was much harder because it was going in a different direction. His hand were sweaty as he tried to keep his grip on his broom. Somehow he managed to get through the ring as well as the stationary ring after. By this time though his head was pounding and he was dizzy. Magnus hit the barrel and there was a sickening thud as his head hit the barrel. He was spinning out of control and couldn’t tell which way was up or down.
((lol can't have him good at everything right away after all.)) (and everyone around)
Merlin was smiling while watching Magnus pass the obstacles, but when he saw him completely out of control he panicked. "Arresto Momentum!" Seeing that he kept spinning he tried again and again. "Arresto Momentum! Arresto Momentum!" He realized he was screaming so he lowered his voiced and once again said the spell "Arresto Momentum" His voice calmed and determined, instantly he saw the effects on Magnus who started slowing down. Merlin breathe again and frowned since no one else tried to help him. "You alright there Mag?"
He was suddenly slowing way down and the patch of brown mud alerted the boy to which way was up. He righted himself and managed to get back up to everyone. "Yeah," he said panting and wiping his head. He had a nice red spot where he hit the barrel but otherwise he was fine. "I'm okay. Bit dazed is all. Thanks for the rescue, Merls." He rubbed his head again. "Man, that is intense. Totally gonna 'ave another go for sure."
((OOC: and whoever else wants to poke fun at the ill-adept Sauvage)) Sauvage had honestly thought the whole hanging-upside-down-thing was a joke, until Magnus and Merlin started attempting the course. She watched wide-eyed as each boy tried . . . and failed. Her mouth was going dry and she felt her arms turn to noodles. If they couldn't do it then how could she? She continued to watch silently horror-struck, then thought she might try just the hanging upside down part. One step at a time after all. Slowly and ever-so-carefully, she loosened her grip and let gravity pull her down and around her broomstick. "Uhhhhh....." she groaned as a rush of adrenaline and nausea consumed her. A few minutes later, she'd finally grown accustomed the the feeling and even went in a few circles while remaining upside down. She was nowhere near being mentally prepared enough to try the obstacle course, though.
Considering how uncomfortable Sauvage had been, Magnus was proud of her. "Well done," he said. Her managing to go in circles was impressive.
"Thank you, but eet eez really not zat exciting." She sat upright on her broom again, which began to waver a bit as the blood drained from her head, making it pound. She looked around, careful to keep her broom steady, wondering if anyone else was going to try the course. For a half second, she considered trying it out next, but then fear rushed through her self-doubt crept into the back of her mind and sent nervous shivers down her spine. " 'onestly," she said to Magnus as she looked at the course. "I am not so sure zat I can do zees."
“I think you did brilliantly,” he said honestly.
He saw her glance at the course and Magnus screwed up his courage and suddenly was off again. He did a short circle of the course before he was back upside down. The first five went well—similar as before though this time with no getting hit. The sixth barrel wasn’t too difficult considering he’d managed to get through the first one. As he rounded towards the rings he flew through the first one, then the next and next. He did the u turn and went to through the 11th obstacle. Magnus’ confidence was gaining as he slipped through the stationary barrel and the one at a slow pace. But the first rotating ring he missed. Swearing, he circled back through the barrel and then through the first rotating ring, but he missed the second ring. His head was pounding—likely he hadn’t recovered enough to be doing this upside down. He was getting dizzy so he righted himself and went back over to the others. “I’m not giving up, but I need a few moments before I tackle it again.”
(and all who read it xD)
Paddy stared at Eros, wondering if she'd heard him correctly. How could anyone do that obstacle course upside down? Watching the first few students attempt it, she realised that as long as she could keep a tight grip on her broom, and figured out turning, she might just get through the stationary obstacles at least. Rolling over on her broom, she urged it to move forwards slowly, aiming it towards the first ring. No doubt the slowest flying bat would've overtaken her - in fact, she could imagine a flobberworm wriggling faster than she was flying, but then it didn't have to worry about being this high up and upside down. Much to her surprise, she flew through the first ring without any trouble although she figured it was more by luck than any form of skill. The stationary barrels were next, and although she almost overshot to one side, she was going slowly enough to correct her aim before she collided with anything. The moving ring was going to be more challenging though, and even flying at such a slow pace, Paddy wasn't able to fly through it. Rather than colliding with the ring, she flew off to one side and flipped back over so she was the right way up. She needed a break before trying that again, and realised that someone could actually have finished the entire course in the time it'd taken her to crawl around those three obstacles.
She did wonder if she'd be able to do the course the right way up once everyone had finished, just to see if her flying skills were anywhere near where she hoped they were!

Merlin was glad his friend was alright and admired the girl's focus on one task at a time. "You are doing excellent Sau!" He tried to encourage her so she wouldn't give up, then he saw Paddy going slower than he did when he first tried and couldn't help to giggle. "At least I wasn't the slowest." Being too careful wasn't a sin so he clapped when she finished her first try.
"Alright, I'm going to do something in order to know how to move through the obstacles, if that's ok Eros." He saw him eyeing him suspiciously. "I'm going to go through all the obstacles in the right position in order to get used to them and then try it upside down, is that alright?"
