New attempt at 'Subeta-style' wig

Working-size ver:

Any input would be much appreciated, thanks so much!
EDIT
Added a soft blur effect to help ease the pixely-ness that GIMP provides.

EDIT AGAIN
Made the highlights semitransparent and I think I ended up darkening the whole thing slightly, oh well. Unfortunately I did something wrong when I merged the layers to apply the blur effect to them, so unless I can find a way around that, I might not be able to make this wig in any color but black... no promises though, I might find a way.

EDIT ONE MORE TIME:
Tried my hand at an item image!

OLD WIG ATTEMPT
I dont think it looks like subeta style. the bangs and the hair part looks kinda weird to me, and the shape of it as well. the light direction is kinda odd especially on the bangs when the light is really bright, it should be less bright compared to the highlights in the back, it has a overly brightened/darked look. the lineart is really thin and very stiff. the hair ends could be a little more natural. and you might need two more shades,I seen three at least. Its 3-5 layers of shading
its really hard to explain but thats just what I see, I dont know if it would get approved or not. I finished it got denied once. It got denied for pillow shading(basically it was flat looking because I did not take in account of some strands casting shadow.
Im not sure if there will be interest or not or if it will get approved or not, I have seen worse wigs got approved before.Yours isnt too bad for someone just starting. minor tweaks im sure.
my way of starting was just jumping in. I finished the overlay and ci best I could. Pinged customerwear and hoped for the best. Then put it in the queue. I had some hits and misses, it gets easier down the road. if you dont get much feedback in a day or two, ill ping some friends of mine to also give advice.
here is a link on what is approved and whats not--if you have not already seen it but just in case- http://subeta.net/forums.php/read/73554
p.s.looking at your art and approved art will also help as well!
I edited the first post, does that look better? I want the hair to be peicy and stringy, it's supposed to be freshly chopped mermaid hair (and constant seawater exposure makes your hair pretty damn stringy) so I'd like to avoid editing the bangs too much if possible!
Hey ! This is my daughter . She's learning to draw Custom Wears. Do any of you CI buyers and sellers and makers have any advice for her? Pretty please?
It's kinda similar to the hair you are wearing right now. The bangs on the left side extends beyond the hair, so it doesn't look right to me. It's a good first try. Maybe add more wispy hair pieces, strands flowing or something...

I think the front bangs have too many fine pixles, or it looks jagged at least. But the back/side of the deign looks really great. I also like the shading and color of the first picture (the edited one I presume). They are quite picky about the lines/outline, I've noticed, than anything else.
But I do like it, especially if it were to come in colors other than blue! lol :D However I wouldn't by this exact wig design simply because I don't like the longer hair (framing the face) in front with short hair in the back in any of my wigs.

I really really extremely want:This is a bit like the old subeta wearables, but I believe the issues with it is the lineart looks a bit pixelated and the shading isn't with enough layers like mentioned. I'm personally not an artist, so I don't know what more than that I can say, but it's not really my style of wigs. I think the outlines may need to be a bit thicker too, but also this looks bit too pixelated in general.
Edit: Also with the shading, there are a few black lines in there, and it needs to be lines of a darker shade of the color. The lines I'm mostly referring to is the ones coming from the part, at least the ones in the second picture.
Hi there! My friend asked me if I could drop in here and give you a few tips! :3 This is a really good first attempt, so please don't be disheartened by anything I have to say, I really think you can get into this.
So as a couple of people have mentioned it's very, very pixelated and to me looks a little over sharpened, I honestly can't offer help with that without knowing what program/tools you are using though. Personally I like the Photoshop default brush set to 2px, but I know other users use SAI's pen tool at 2/3px and this seems to work fine most of the time. It could be a resize issue though, it'd be interesting to see this at full size.
Anyway HERE is a guide I made for generally shaping CWs to a HA for people, which you might find useful, and HERE is a specific bit on wigs.
Specifically with this wig I do feel like you could afford to move the parting, and relax the height of the fringe a little bit (please don't copy/trace over this directly it's only super rough D: )
This should help to bring the wig more in line with HA itself, at the moment it feels like the back and the fringe are being viewed from different angles.
With regards to your colouring, again this is not bad for a first attempt. Just remember that the light source is coming from the upper left. At the moment it's somewhat indistinct.
You don't need to do it as dark as I have here, this is just for illustration, but do bare in mind which side of the item the shadow would need to be darker on to follow the given light source :3
I hope this helps, and do give me a ping if you'd like me to come back and see it
Thank you so much for all the advice! You're all really helpful ;-; I updated the first post again! Gah, I need to learn to save my work more often.
thats okay, it happens (yeah save save, i use layers when i want to try something different. I would start from scratch if you lost it completely. Databunny offered some good advice as well as the others who are commented. Dont feel too discouraged, sometimes i feel i have 90% fails and only the 10% come out okay.
If you ever need me to look over your wips, feel free to smail me questions or if you need any redline help. (however databunnys redline is on point)
but yeah, keep it up. your making progress!
oh good... , is one of Subeta's "Premier Artist" /heeehehehe ❤️ BunnyQueen!/
perhaps , when she has a couple of seconds, can offer some advice also...
I'm sure told you about these threads, HERE?
it has submission rules, and pricing advice, etc...BUT it also has links to some tutorial's of drawing the 'subeta way' /heh/
ANY Waaaayyyyy....... grin. I'm not an artist...But usually, the people around here are very friendly, an willing to help.
:D GOOD LUCK!
/OMG KAYT!! If your daughter start making custom wears!!!! O!M!G!! lol i can just IMAGINE the AWESOMENESS that is going to come out of THAT Design House!/
:D
Herro there! Just taking a gander at everything here and first off, welcome to the exciting world of cws! (and as you can see, also frustrating). We were all there at some point, trying to figure it all out, so hang in there. You have an advantage in that you have loads of help from those that have been doing it awhile. So, lucky you! I had to learn from the beginning of it all, lots of trial and error and sometimes I still get it wrong. lol. So anyways. The third version is looking better, however it is still extremely pixelated. What program are you using? If you're using Photoshop, when you shrink it to useable size- when you see the image resize window, at the bottom it says 'resample size' and a dropdown menu. If you choose the default 'Bicubic Automatic', it will shrink and look really pixelated. I always choose 'Bicubic (best for smooth gradients)' because it always resizes the best.
So yeah. As far as the wig, it's looking better, but I think the part on the head still looks like it's not following the skull quite right. Your eye wants it to follow the part of the bangs, so it just is rather distracting. The light source is looking better, but I would also work on putting in the light source using the different layers of shading too, not just adding a darker layer on top of it all. The front strand on the right side (HAs left) looks like the highlight is coming from the right side of the canvas, which isn't correct. There should be less light on that side overall.
I hope that helps. Keep at it and good luck!
Also, if you wouldn't mind, I think showing us the working version would help. Thanks!
Haha, was already replying when you posted this. Thanks sweetie. lol
She's super talented and I know that once she gets the hang of it she'll do amazing but she's been away from subeta for years and so the whole concept of custom wears is totally new to her and she's a bit overwhelmed but I know that if she doesn't get discouraged and keeps at it she'll be open for commissions in no time! Also, as soon as she is we're totally starting that design house (Cauldron Customs maybe?)!
I want to thank everyone who has offered support and feedback, especially and I really appreciate you taking the time to help her find her feet!
LOL , you were always the first person I think of, when people ask for drawing cw help. you've always taken the time out of your own busy schedule, to help the newbies along.
heh. ooops, NOT saying that the OTHER Artist, don't do this! lol in fact, LOTS of people help :)
lol , it's the FRUSTRATING part that usually gets me. lol. i can't get past the 1st stage of TRYING to draw. heh. and Cauldron Customs is Excellent! hahahaaaa!
(gives the BunnyQueen and EXTRA BIG HUG! and passes some chocolate over to jules)
:D GOOD LUCK AIRIGH!!

Aw, thanks hun. I try to help where I can. I'd do more if I could, but it's hard to find the time to do screenshots and redlines when you have a baby pounding on your keyboard and demanding attention. lol.
But yeah, good luck again airigh, I'm sure you'll succeed, once you get the hang of it.
I'm using GIMP, which has a tendency to make EVERYTHING really pixelly, and I'm also a pixel artist normally... I guess applying a slight blur to the lineart after resizing might help? Unfortunately I lost the working version so I'll have to draw a new practice wig from scratch!
Thank you all so much! I'll update the thread later with the new wig.
I've tried making an entirely new wig since I lost the data for the old one, so I updated the first post!
That's actually pretty cute. Very curly! Curls are a pain. lol. I've never used GIMP myself, so I'm not familiar with the brushes or their hardness or anything, but does it have soft brushes too? Looking at the working size, at least the highlights look too sharp even on the large size. It might be a good idea at least for the highlight, to work with a softer brush (or even blur it slightly) and then resize. It might help to make it look softer overall.
