Do you have a "trend" or preference for your pet names - A legion of legacy names? Exclusively real words? A fan of numbers? A little bit of this and a little bit of that? I highly, HIGHLY prefer real first names for my pets! The switch to non-unique names was a blessing for me, so now I'm able to have all the names that I wanted (but could never get) for years. I do have a few exceptions to this rule, like my pets Void and Chaos, but those pets represent entities from the universe I've developed, and I refer to Void and Chaos as if those are their first names. :p

I guess I do have a couple of pets that are named after concepts from the universe I've developed - I have a few pets named after fictional cities (Peruthias, Luxos Noaa) and I have a pet named Church of Tobiathan, which I will... one day work on. One day.

Do you have any pet names you just adore or that have an extra special place in your heart? Aran actually fits this bill! She's one of my very few legacy name pets. I remember the day the name Aran was supposed to be cleared - I was stuck in a symphony rehearsal, and couldn't get home until about an hour after the name cleared. Thankfully, I don't think it was a highly sought-after name, because I was able to snag it! I think she's the only pet I own where I had to play the name-clearing game. I know it doesn't matter anymore because of non-unique names, now, but I still enjoy the fact that she has a legacy name.

Where did your pets' names come from - feel free to share whether you have one or one hundred! A lot of my pets' names are just... real world names that I really like, haha. Some of them, however, are names that I came up with, back when I was... oh, 14? 15? Back when names were non-unique. Aoske, Azell, Rosko, Hayun, Junielle, Vanti, and Zodiah are my best examples.

Extra special place for those that I've picked up from the pond, I think Sanctimonious, Basilica and Benedictus were all pond finds. My most pampered pets are probably Mairon (battle + gourmand) and Laurentin & Kielo just because they're my special little guys. These days also dnd characters, but subeta-wise I've been lazy.

I think he used to be a bloodred mortiking, and honestly those are super cool tristin - he's an adopted pet, and I adore him to bits but I still haven't figured out who he is. I should work on him soon joaquim - same as with em, this is a behindthename baby. I wanted their stories interlocked, so I went with french names. French names in general have been my go-to around legacy times, since most english versions of names have been already snatched up.

first age curufin - from tolkien's silmarillion, legacy kinslayer - reference to tolkien's silmarillion, legacy. he was the first one of the bunch, i don't remember if i wanted real words at first or was the og name just taken. mairon - tolkien's silmarillion, everyone's favourite villain sauron before his name change. legacy finrod - another silm pet, although i did change his name at one point to turn him into a dnd pet instead. changed it back to its legacy name, i have enough slots to create a new dnd pet

realm of the elderlings farseer - both fanpets, farseer is technically a real name in the books but i wanted to go for more descriptive names for both foolish - same as farseer. The Fool is a character, and i believe that was taken already

game ocs kielo - means lily of the valley in finnish. my main in gw2 is named Kielonkajo, but I usually shorten the name to just Kielo. sylvari - adopted from a thread! sylvari is the word for the plant people in gw2

dalish - dragon age word. legacy tabris - dragon age name. legacy privilege - i think cousland was taken, but i quite like the name privilege for a noble character vincent - used to be vincere "to win/to be victorious" in latin, the origin of the name vincent. literally back when legacy name hunting was at its peak, getting the name vincent or even a derivative was tough. my gf at the time had a matching name for her oc, so it was fitting though.

gavriel - again going for the french names bc they're pretty and used to be more available isidor - same as above

There's something special at, at this point I think nostalgic, about the names that we had to work so hard for. I love NUNs because of what it offers everyone, this group is a great example. I think having those LN babies that we created is a special attachment to our history here, and I'm so glad the staff came up with the concept. They did a great job of thinking of everyone when they created the new name system.

I love seeing names that people came up with to work with the old limitations. A lot of wholly unique characters came from that I think!

That's what my "family" is like! A little bit of everything! I feel like the serendipitous finds (on Subeta and IRL) truly are special. OMG Kielo is STUNNING. That overlay design is adorable and their colors are beautiful. That's so cool that they "live" through DND. I've never played but have always been very interested. I think I'd have to find some new friends that were also into the idea if I were to actually join in. For now I just admire from afar.

Tolkien named pets = immediate love. Reuel is my Tolkien baby. He and Pratchett are the "story tellers" and their profile stories are going to be around the concept of day dreams and dreams. You know, when I eventually write them D:

All of your names are really lovely. The French names, the herbals, the unique spellings - all of them feel like they do somehow belong together even though they're from their own groupings. There are so many that I'm like "oh, that could go many ways as far as a character!".

You're so sweet, thanks for taking a gander at my pets. ;A; I just realized I need to update Egg GFs - the last time I worked on that profile we were still deep in the pandemic, before we had to put our sweet old man cat Calcifer down. I should make a new update and create a new mini profile for our newest cat!

I am making a video game! Don't be too impressed, though, because it's not like I know how to code. I'm using a program similar to RPG Maker, which is simple enough that even a dummy like me can figure it out, lol. It's verrrrry slow going. And it's the main reason I haven't done very much work on my Subeta pets the last few years - I couldn't justify putting effort into Subeta when I SHOULD be putting that effort towards my game instead. Thankfully, I finally realized that Subeta helps me with the character development aspect of my game, so I've come back to use it as a personal character encyclopedia.

You have some fun legacy pet names, I just noticed! Yes, I agree - the new naming system is a wonderful boon to the community, and I really appreciate how legacy names are still a thing, should people choose to use them. I do feel badly for people who really enjoyed holding onto their unique pet names, but, like, legacy names are a great compromise imo! People can name their pets whatever you want, AND you get to hang onto the original iteration of the name? Sounds great to me!

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss of Calcifer. He seems like he was a very endearing companion. Congratulations as well on your new family member! My pet Booped is a tribute to my furry family, and Remiel is a individual tribute to my soul dog Juneau who passed in 2021.

I'm still impressed! It takes some degree of skill to do even with a program, and it's always inspiring to see someone going outside their current comfort zone to build something new! Feeling like we're not nailing it can be uncomfortable, I know I tend to shrink back when I'm not feeling like I know what I'm doing and have to remind myself that that's part of the journey! That's super cool that you're able to enjoy Subeta for what it is and have it tied to your game, I'm glad you discovered it can help you shape your characters and world build!

Thank you! I agree, I think keeping the "legacy name" in tact provides that unique element to the name and for those who enjoyed the process of finding that perfect name, they can still experience some of that searching for LNs to adopt or new names to create that are still unique. At the same time, everyone can enjoy the names that best represent their pets.

Haha, yeah, I have a Nightmare Kumos, which I uhh... don't really like the art of, sorry.. but it's what works best for the character. Might scrap that character altogether. I've barely put any work into them.

They're so cute though, I want one again. I also used to have more Jollins, and want more than my one. Angelic and Darkmatter!

I had that problem with

Ordinemon. I wanted her to be angelic, but I don't like most of the angelic pets, and I wasn't fond of the ones that looked most like the character. I finally went with something I liked more than something that fit the character, and chose the Yaherra even though it's a quad. I decided that if I was going to make her such a rare color, it should be a species I like :P (I do love the angelic Blob, but I already had one, and it really wouldn't have suited Ordinemon XD)

3. Do you have any species and color combinations you want to use, but haven't found the right pet or idea for it yet?

I love most of the Illumises (Illumi?), but don't have ideas for any of them. And I love the Experiment but have never found a use for it.

I also have four Blobs already (angelic Beacara, cream Sweets, glacier Frio, and glade Rubel) that I don't have character ideas for yet. I might end up letting Sweets and Frio go if I don't come up with anything and need the pet slots, since they don't have any special stats, and I could easily remake them. They're so cute though ;____; It gives me anxiety to have so many unfinished pets. (Although I finished two last week, so I'm making progress!)

thank you, I'm still not over losing him, even though it's now been a couple of years. but having a new companion has helped ease the pain! Booped is absolutely adorable - I'm tearing up over parts of your writing, because there's just so much love behind each and every word. Well, thank you! Yes, Subeta is going to be a big help in developing my characters. I've already written most of the game's main dialogue, but there's a lot of side conversations I'll need to write; these side conversations are supposed to help flesh each character out. I've done... some side conversations, but I have a long way to go.

WEEK SIX QUESTIONS! (only my second week answering, but yay week six!) Do you find yourself drawn to a particular species or color? I looooove Cadogres and Endeavors. I love reptiles. And robots. And I've always been a big fan of media that combines animals and robots (Zoids.......). I'm trying to collect most, if not all, of the special Cadogre and Endeavor colors! Do you have any pets where you had to debate between a species/color combination that worked best for the character versus one you liked more? Not in particular! There's so many different Subeta pet/color combinations that I feel like there's a pet for everybody's personalities. I suppose I am having a (small) issue with Aran right now - she was a Glacier Demi for the longest time, then a Spectrum Demi for a few years, and now a Glacier Demi again. Her personality is complicated - she's a party-goer, loves to indulge, has a go-with-the-flow sort of attitude... but at the same time, she's lived through the apocalypse and has witnessed countless horrors, so she's got mega PTSD. She struggles to be her old self in a world where most of civilization has fallen apart. I figured Glacier Demi was more appropriate for how she presents herself today, but Spectrum Demi is very tempting when I consider her past...

Do you find yourself drawn to a particular species or color? Paralixes are my fav species, I've got 20 of them. I just have a thing for eastern dragons, and the Paralix is a nice blank canva for a ton of dragon characters. I have 5 Galactic Paralixes and 0 regrets. I know having more than one of the same pet/species combo is a big no for a lot of people, but I find it impossible to restrict myself to one of each combo. Most of the characters in my big space plots have dragon quad designs, and there's only so many nice space dragon species/color combo on Subeta. At the end of the day, 4/5 of my Galactic Paralixes have overlays too, so I never really see that they're the same. The army for the record:

Audrey is a big one. When I adopted her, she was a Reborn Pherret, and I never had the heart to change her to anything else. I know her overlay is a fox (my fav animal), and she would be better suited as a Jollin or a Kumos, but she's been a Pherret for so long, I now have an emotional attachement to it and she'll probably never be changed.

I have a number of pets with designs that clash with their species/color combo for practical reasons:

Andromeda &

Cassiopeia Are Kumoses. It doesn't really make than much sense since their designs are undescribed anthro, but I like Kumos and I thought it could work better than a bird, since they both have some canine/feline traits? I thought of making Andromeda aNoktoa, but beside her wings the rest of her design is not really bird like. There's not really any color/species combo on site that fit their design, so they're Kumoses and I'm at peace with that.

Cassini is a Serpenth, but his design would be better suited for a Mahar or a Paralix. I made him a Serpenth since he's 'hidding' as the rings of a planet, and I thought a snake had better imagery.

Dimension is an Experiment , yet their design is again a dragon. I made colored them before Rift pets were a thing, and it made the most sense for their story to make them a strange creature. I could recolor them to a Riftborn Paralix, but I spent so much time zapping to get an (which is also a design I love), that I opted to keep them this way.

Reborn Demi. Back when I was 14 (!) and first joined Subeta, the Reborn Demi was my first dream pet. For years I had one names Bankotsu, and it was my dearest pet. I let go of him like 15 years ago, but Reborn Demis will always have a special place in my heart. I haven't been able to find any suitable character for one, but someday...

I think I have a pretty good mix of colors but I do tend to go for canine and feline-based pets. (Telenines, Clawsions, Archans, Tigreans, Felis). I also love Blobs.

I don't think I've run into this but I have several pets I'm holding for future colors. In particular, Harvest Illumis (Orchard), Sweetheart Qrykee (Croc), Sweetheart Blob (Twix) and Harvest Blob (Pumpkin). I also have to figure out a color for Bumbles. I'll keep him a bumbus but haven't figured out what color best fits him yet. Maybe chibi or scribble.

There are several color/species combos I want where I have great character ideas but I don't currently have pet slots. I keep a list of name ideas for future pets.

But I don't like how cartoony the Kanis looks and I don't want to draw a custom overlay. I might make her a Nostalgic Kanis down the line, but IDK I spent 13+ mil. on Experimental Dew to try to get her to be the horse/snake experiment, but had to settle for the LOL. It's fine...

Also for nostalgic reasons, I want an Escalade and Spectrum Kumos again. IDK what I'd do with them though. I did dug up a bunch of art for an old dog character though. Maybe I'll reuse it.

I try to double up on pets and colors as little as possible, so my pets don't reflect this, but I love Cadogre and Endeavor. I also think the Blob is very clever and fun. Darkonite and Kora are also great, I'm remembering as I look through images. Color-wise, maybe Blacklight?

I'm still contemplating whether I want to have Shun be an Experiment , which fits his colors best, or something else like an Angelic Escalade which looks a bit more pleasant. Experiment is very cute, but the visible innards are a bit squirmy for me. (He's currently in Zapper hell, so he's being tossed around between random species.)

I'm also never sure about exactly what direction I should go with Nyctophobia, since she's currently in Chibi coloration to reflect the one who's afraid, but for a long time I've been debating whether she'd work better if she was Nightmare coloration... Not that I've managed to really write anything for her for years. (And by years I mean... Oof, looks like a decade.)

Probably a lot. Since I mostly focus on fanpets, I end up choosing pets that I feel best fit the character, so there are plenty of pets I haven't had the chance to use.

Experiments , , , and , Angelic Charlie and Darkonite, Blacklight Darkonite, Escalade, and Kora, a good few of the Darkmatter and Glade pets, Storm Kerubi and some others... There are a lot of neat pets that I just don't have the room or ideas for.

I am all about the Yaherras! Before that it was Celinox, and still is a bit. As for colors, honestly there's so many fantastic ones I can't choose. I've mentioned it in other posts before, but the thing that sold me on Subeta all those years ago was seeing how pretty just the Common Celinox was!

I also wanted an Experiment (the red panda/moth thing) like, immediately after it was released. Loved it.

Kind of? There have been a few instances where I changed a pet's color after it was revamped. The art was usually much better, but something about the expression changed and it didn't feel right for my character anymore.

Usually though, my problem is trying to decide between two very excellent but similar options. Yes, either one would be great, but that just makes the choice harder! XD

Absolutely! There's a pet goal wishlist on my profile - I've got enough sP to make any one of them right now, but I just don't have so much as a name for them yet.

Do you find yourself drawn to a particular species or color? I was curious about this, so I actually tallied my species and colors LOL. The data supports what I figured, which is that I lean towards canines and yaheera with a more general preference for mammals. I think if I were skilled when it comes to art or had the finances to purchase art I would have a broader collection (and more pets of course to make space). I love the colors and softness of angelic pets, so it's no surprise to me that I have more of them than any other color. Also no surprise if that I tend towards "nature" looking pets (like glade) and "happy" looking pets (like spectrum).

I chose the one he has (darkmatter demi) because it worked really well for the character idea and the overlay idea I had, and thanks to he does have an awesome overlay. Buuuuutttt, I'm just not attached to the look of the darkmatter demi and keep wanting to change him to something I like more. I just don't know who would fit his character better. I also did this with Oceanaria. I originally had her as a glade tutani, then decided that the experiment fit the character design much better and spent ages zapping for the right one. Then (like last week) I decided that I just liked the glade tutani much better and changed her back LOL. I've also debated back and forth with making Sweaters Angelic.

I'm also an Angelic and Glade fan! They're just so pretty. I'm in a similar boat with Aphelion as far as just not vibing with the color and species, buuut his name is so specific to his character that while I could change it a little as far as the story I don't think I could totally change the character and keep the name. Blergh.

Awww yay! That makes me so happy! I definitely thought of you and your blob army when I was writing this weeks question lol. Oof yeah, especially with angelic pets since they're so expensive I feel like you've gotta go with a look you like. The Sweetheart and Angelic Illumis in particular are on my list too, they're just so lovely and adorable! Congrats on finishing two pets! I don't get anxiety about having so many not done, but I do get annoyed with myself lol.

I completely understand. hugs Juneau was, and is, my soul mate. I will never feel truly okay being apart from her like this and even though she passed in 2021 there are moments where the grief is just as bad as it was during that first year. Having Atka and Emerie and Cranberry join our family helped me too, sometimes all you can do with so much grief is recognize that it is, at its core, powerful love and then create space for that love to flow out. No one can replace a loved one. Other relationships can help us re-root our feet here and find joy. I'm glad you've been able to bring yourself some healing though a new loved one as well. <3

ZOIDS :D I literally still have some of my favorite model kits (Blade Liger, Liger Zero, Shadow Fox) on my bookshelves and have all the comics. At one point I ended up having my husband find the show online and burn all of Chaotic Century to disc for me because I couldn't find DVDs anywhere but ebay for mad money. I love the nostalgic telenine because it immediately made me think of zoids and I WILL come up with a character eventually so I can have one.

Ohh yeah, Aran sounds like a hard pet to use site art to truly represent because her character is so different between past and present! Hahaha I'm expecting to see a Bloodred Cadogre on your profile ASAP XD

I never would have even guessed you had so many of the same color and species because all of your absolutely stunning overlays! I never tire of looking through your pets because the artistic representations you have are just gorgeous and unique as heck. What a great example of a different approach to species and color.

I think the choices for Audrey, Andro / Cass, Cassini, and Dimensions absolutely make sense! Especially Cassini and the shake / ring connection! I hadn't taken a gander at the Reborn Demi in a long while but that is a stunning pet, and one with so much character potential!

I'm a canine person too, though I had more of a mix than I expected! Ironically the pet made as a tribute to my IRL babies isn't canine or feline XD I don't think about it too often, but I'm sure I may end up changing looks or making new pets as new species/color art is released. I hope the ones you're waiting on get released soon!

I 100% thought of you when I made this prompt XD I'm glad you commented, I almost tagged you LOL. 13 mil, eep. That's frustrating to have a "rabbit" pet for your rabbit character but then like, NO. I recently saw some of the old art of the kumos and telenine and man did it make me feel nostalgic! I like the art now, but I liked it then too lol. It's been so long I forgot what some of my pets once looked like. I hope you come up with characters soon so you can enjoy having those sentimental kiddos!

The Blob is such a fun pet because of how unique each color is! I am tempted at times to make some, but then I feel like that would be a total rabbit hole for me. I tend to lean towards species and colors that are the character most of the time anyway, so that also helps me. Maybe could do a nice overlay for Shun so the innards aren't visible? :D They're my go-to for overlays because they're good quality, fair price, and quick! Some of the experiments are really nice and unique, but I just don't have a character in mind for them. Soren's character Aran sounds like a similar challenge to Nycto - the parts of the character are so different that representing the whole character is a challenge!

Ohhh those are two of my favorites! I would not be surprised at all if I end up with more Yaheeras and Celinoxes! 104 is also one of my favorites! I had to have them too, just gorgeous! That's a BIG thing for me with art changes - the expression is often what sets the tone for the pet. I tend to lean towards angelic and spectrum and glade because their expressions reflect the character I have in mind. I think that's why I don't have as many of some colors - they're so pretty but the expression is harsh or combative and it doesn't work. Hahah right! In the end I'm grateful for all the options but it makes things hard sometimes! I keep a folder on my computer with the pet image of species/color combos I want lol. That way if I'm looking at a new character I can focus on those.

oh definitely nostalgic, i just ADORE the concepts of... pretty much every single one tbh!!! i have 4 nostalgic pets atm (prophet, virtual self, majestic prince, and jakk). i also have at least a couple of nightmare and blacklight pets, which are Also good colors ehe.

Bloodshot who is meant to be a fanpet of Stephen King's Dark Tower series. i wasn't sure WHAT bloodred pet i wanted to go with, but went with harvester bc they're vaguely humanoid and i want a humanoid-ish overlay for him at some point.

The Nostalgic are SUCH a good group! I love that they're so varied in appearance! I had a hard time choosing between the stuffed animal types for Fellarka, but went with the Kanis because The Velveteen Rabbit was one of my favorite books as a child and my first real book was about a bunny!

I remember Night Brights! My sister had one and I always wanted to play with it. She would let me ... sometimes lol. The Nostalgic Telenine is at the top of the list for me as far as future pets.

Ah Oops, I missed two. last weeks names. The name draws me. That's what I draw out from the character or the trait that I want him for. Some of my characters don't have a name. Karaline for one had a place holder name that changed until I managed to snag her. Then her underdeveloped character fleshed out more with the name. pretty sure I shortened the legacy name to Karalin.

Zappers! Oh wow, I don't want to think of the tokens I used for zapping. The few experiments I wanted I zapped and zapped and still never got. I used either a Loyalty box or CSC to get the ones I wanted. Vollenthix is the only one I still have out of the 5 I originally had. Oo yeah... I just zap until I decide what I want that pet to be. JBB is my current target. Although I am starting to lean towards a Dilemma for him.

That's how I feel about names too! Most of the time (now) I start from the name and a character will shape in my head. I used to have more of a "theme" or idea that I picked a name for, mostly when I started. Though atm I actually DO have an idea that I'm name-hunting for (I like to adopt LNs) and a species/color I'm name hunting for that the idea will probably get fleshed out on once I find a name I think fits!

I've only had one or two pets that I zapped for fun, most of the time my list of pets I like the art of is longer than my list of pets I have space for, so when I do have someone there's a species and color already picked out lol. Changing the idea and look for a pet you zapped forever to get or spent limited currency on is so painful sometimes lol. I've also done the whole "change color and species then decide I want them to be the same color but a different species" kinda thing. I have that atm where now that I look at the line up for characters I have decided to make Kotori a blacklight telenine vs the yaheera, and I think I've finally decided to change Aphelion to the blacklight yaheera. Buuuut since I don't want to separate their legacy names from them I can't just name swap LOL.

I filled up their treasure chests and actually wrote a little bit for both of them, but as usual, I lost interest halfway through and couldn't complete them. xD Oh! One other thing. Aran. I'm waiting for it to be approved and I'm super excited for it to go live!

Made some decisions about things you were on the fence about? YES... okay. So. I'm a huge Star Trek fan. I've been watching Deep Space Nine recently and loving it. I don't really do fanpets on Subeta, but... I dunno, something came over me, and... I ended up with [pet not found]. I also gave DS9 the hybrid profile template I mentioned above, which I think looks nice. Now I just need to decide what I'm doing for the actual profile content. 😭

Need ideas for something? Help me decide what I'm doing for DS9, lmao. I don't want to write straight fanfiction for it, but at the same time I feel like it'd be boring if I just wrote a summary of what DS9 is? I'm also worried about writing profiles for each of the characters I have listed under the "crew" section. I don't want to write anything inaccurate. I'm not used to writing for characters that aren't actually mine!

Want to lament how hard it is to motivate yourself at times? Oogh... Please grant me the strength I need to finish Imanuel and Tomas. Please. I just want to finish a pet in 2024!
