I glance at usernames to make sure but I don't actually count them. I am putting my trust in the participants ^0^ If something does turn out to look suspicious I can always file a ticket with staff so they can check it out for me.

it's not really navel-gazing, if I gave that impression I apologize, that's misleading. It's more person vs person or person vs system or person vs environment drama that illuminates the implied interior drama for the reader, maybe not for the character (until it's either almost or already too late lol)

my favorite fantasy-romance novel series is an older one by Roberta Gellis. It is set in ancient Greece where the people the locals think of as the gods are really sort of psychic/magic-powered people-from-elsewhere who are longer lived than local human beings.

The first couple are Dazzling Brightness (sort of a Hades/Persephone story) and Shimmering Splendor (ditto for Eros/Psyche). I really enjoyed those books a lot.

I haven't actually read that book, but I looked up some excerpts, and surprisingly kind of similar in some ways even though entirely different in most ways.
