I feel like the Book Nook being bought out/books being at crazy prices has happened before, and it's because of this same reason - lack of supply and insane demand.
There is something up with the Book Nook, or as some other users have insinuated, someone is buying up all the stock at a crazy speed. With the Quest-a-con happening, the book prices will be insane. Users will want to complete Library quests.. I can imagine a lot more frustration when the Quest-a-con begins but very few people are able to complete the Library quests due to insane book prices.
are buying up faster, because of shortage of books.
However, I drop in at "restocked now" and as mentioned above, there frequently is a total of only 5 or 6 different books. Then the shop is empty for a long time, which doesn't happen at normal restocks, because there are sooooo many items for that shop. Every now and then a bigger restock happens, which still is only like 3/4 of what normally used to happen.
Since the book nook seems to be the biggest problem, maybe it can be set as the mystery box shop for a couple days. That might at least slow down the rising prices a little.
Maybe some books could also be donated by staff members, maybe even by using NPC accounts, I think they've had items donated by NPCs before and it adds a bit more fun to it.
Also, Blue Sky vends from Book Nook, but I understand that not everyone has the tokens to want to use up all their vends with.
There is definitely going on with restocks and it's happened pretty recently. I shouldn't be able to sit here and wipe out a shop inventory on a whim (and a slow taking my time whim that I did the other day to The Bake Stop). Which I just did to Weapons Warehouse (minus that duct tape). I don't think anyone else was restocking either as I pretty much got all in stock. Usually I get bored fighting the shop restocking and go off to more normal restocking.

Oh, fair! Sorry I hadn't been RSing in Book Nook for a while, so was just commenting on what I was seeing now.
Rather than dismissing it because changes to the restocking system are on the horizon, It would be nice for someone to at least look into why spells galore and book nook are having such an issue. I rely on restocking to make money not quests or vending.
Book Nook Restocked Now! There are no items stocked :(
Spells Galore Restocked Now! There are no items stocked :(
While questing just now Alexander asked for a common rarity book of which only twelve copies currently exist in the user shops. Once those are gone for his quests, then all that'll be left are the two copies worth 49 million which no sensible person would pay for any quest. A lot of the common and low rarity books are needlessly expensive and the Book Nook is perpetually empty, but this was a particularly egregious case I felt it was worth mentioning on the forums that only highlights this point. Who knows what other books are in similar peril? Something really needs to be done about Book Nook's restocking especially with the Questathon going!

(I've omitted the name of the book in case someone decides they want to buy up the remaining copies to mark up...)
How utterly expected.
I've been watching the items in / out of the shops over the last few days and I'm not convinced the problem is that the items aren't being stocked, I'm more convinced that someone is buying them up. By convinced, I mean, I tracked items going into the shop and then being removed from the shop.
In addition, the shop restocking system is somewhat complicated, in that it says "if this item wasn't purchased before, don't restock it again for awhile" so in the case of a common book that sits in the shop until the shop clears, it won't restock that book again for a few days.
The problem here is really that this is just a silly system. Why do we restock the shops like this? What is the actual intention? There is no point in purchasing items to put in your own shop (very few items from main shops actually make their way to user shops) the only point is to buy them when you're on a quest.
I've just gave the script a shot in the arm (basically: ignore all of the things that typically make it slow itself down) for the restock war, until we push out our larger shop changes. This is the last change I'll be making to this incredibly broken system.
💖 ✨ 🤗
If people found their way to the shops using new.subeta.net and buy items that way - it clears the entire stack for that item regardless if there are 4 showing on the regular subeta.net main shops. I wonder if you disable shops on new.subeta.net we'll see some plumper shops. (In addition to your bandaids until the new systems implemented)
EDIT - THIS GOT FIXED :)
The "don't restock if not bought" thing was implemented because users screamed that shops had too many items in them and too many cheapy not-worth-restocking items in them. Remove this at the peril of them piping up again about it. Endlessly.
Now it's broken again

So it's one crazy billionaire snapping up all the Book Nook stock, or something wrong with the code, is that what I'm reading? You're really, really sure that about this?
Seems like the shops are having a bonanza, heaps of stock right now.
Okay goooooood, thought I was going crazy seeing all these super rares
