Today's question: What's something neat you've recently discovered?

My answer An instrument called the yaybahar, invented by Turkish musician Görkem Şen, who describes it as an "acoustic string synthesizer". I just discovered it yesterday and I am obsessed with the sounds this thing produces; it is truly mesmerizing.

Beatrice You don't need gloves just to pick the berries (most are easy to access without reaching deep into the thorns) but you definitely need them if you're going to attempt to trim them back. Even thick leather gloves don't always fully protect you, the thorns are super gnarly. Growing them in a container is a good idea...I'm not very good for gardening advice myself (I'm just doing the best I can to keep a cactus alive haha) but I found sites that said you could. You'd still have to watch for those shoots they send out (wherever they touch the ground, they take root) and I imagine birds would spread them via seed pretty quickly. I suppose blackberries can get worms, like pretty much any fruit. I have found the occasional worm or bug in foraged berries but tend not to think about it too much unless it looks like a major infestation. My grandpa always soaked his raspberries right after picking to coax the bugs out of them before handing them off to my grandma. I've heard horror stories about huckleberries being infested with worms too but if I'm hiking and I see a huckleberry bush, I am devouring those delicious little morsels and I'm not going to pick apart each one looking for worms lol.

I already suggested an apple-berry pie to my son when he was making his pie and he didn't like the idea at all. He just has an aversion to cooked apples for some reason. I haven't been motivated enough to bake one myself but maybe someday. It really is sounding good...

I suspect candy corn is regarded more as a Halloween decoration than as a treat. People buy it to put in their festive skull-shaped candy dish and then just eat it because it's there, or maybe it just sits there and gets stale lol.

Not really neat, but I was able to remove the cylinder head of my Mazda B4000 engine. All I wanted to see was the condition of the combustion chamber, which I determined a cleanup is necessary. I could disassemble the engine to the bare block, but I would have to make a suitable storage to keep any parts from being further damaged.

The neat part is that I can apply the skill I got from the last three months of shop and all the reading I've done. I look forward to further my knowledge and ability in the next semester.

What's something neat you've recently discovered?

I recently came across an interesting article explaining the correlation between diet and the development of dental arches. I never considered how modern soft diets contributed to underdeveloped jaws and crowded teeth. It does make sense now that I think about it because my mum and everyone in her family who grew up in the old country have perfectly straight teeth but my cousins and I all needed braces despite having significantly better nutrition and dental care.

Atomic Damn, that thorn is out to hurt. I now better understand why you consider it a weed... it does sound insane to deal with. I am surprised it hasn't taken over more of the world yet!

Also... you know how it was gross that I used to eat bugs as a kid ;) I guess you are also getting that good buggy protein through your berries, though unknowingly.

You guys have such interesting traditions for Halloween. Do lots of people actually decorate their houses for the holiday or is it only a few? Do most houses participate in candy-giving?

What's something neat you've recently discovered? I don't know if that this falls under the heading of 'discovery' but I learned something about myself yesterday. I was working in a group project and then someone told me the file I had been working on for hours was exchanged by something else. I immediately starred to panic and my heart exploded and I was really unprofessional for a second and then I noticed my own behaviour and was able to calm myself right away. It turned out not to be a problem after all and all was well but I never knew I had the skill to recognise my own behaviour, deem it as not useful and then just discard the emotions and calm down. I'm a really emotional person and I am veeeeeery expressive when it comes to showing emotions so this was a really significant discovery to me. I think I've got it from my dad. He is the calmest person ever. Not emotional at all, very professional etc. I asked him if he had ever "lost face" in front of anyone really and he said "no" if you consider the fact that I am the person who never had a face to lose since the start, that's quite interesting. So yeah, I hope (in case I'll ever need it again) I'll be able to make use of that skill.

On a more topic-related note: I discovered that my home city opened a no waste store which I am soooooooooo happy with. It's the best. They have vegan Marshmallows. Vegan. effing. Marshmallows. I was literally behaving like a kid in a (candy) store 😂 And one last one: I discovered lots of unused fabric in my parents home. It's kinda stuff and not stretchy (prolly for cushions or something like that) but I love the pattern and really want to start working with it 😍

Awww thank you for the kind words! <3 And I am so happy for you that you are doing well in your courses! :) What's the weather like in your area? Here it's between 4-10°C and mostly cloudy

Its almost the expression "What weather?" The days are still above 25C, while the nights haven't dipped below 20C. Its been clear skies, though a few days were windy. We got snow on the first day of Fall.

I'm not sure it counts as "discovery" but today I watched a video from a youtuber that I forgot to list in the question about youtubers (Ask a Mortician) about the breakout of bubonic plague that came to San Francisco in 1900. Belief in it was skeptical at first, they thought it was "a disease peculiar to China" and that European-descent people couldn't get it (conveniently forgetting about the fact that in the 1500s it wiped out a third of Europe), government (on city, state and federal levels) first tried to cover it up, the SF mayor at the time was corrupt and thought the plague was a hoax/conspiracy against him, and it all just seemed far too familiar. It was really interesting. Video is here if anyone wants to check it out. Bout 32 minutes long. I also recommend her video, The Real Moby Dick Was So Much Worse (that was the first video of hers I ever watched and she hooked me in)

Today's question: What's your favorite holiday dish?

My answer I really like that green bean and mushroom casserole. My mom and sister figured out a great vegan version of it that I think is actually better than the original.

I come from a different culture so we have different holidays to celebrate. Each has its special dish(es) as well. I happen to not be too fond of most of our holiday dishes, or at least not at the moment. Something I can think about that I kinda miss now though is Kahk. It's a kind of cookies that we only eat around the time of a certain feast. You won't find it anywhere any other time of the year. I know it isn't really a dish, but still. xD

What's your favorite holiday dish?

Either apple cinnamon hot cross buns or lotus seed mooncake with double salted yolk. I know these aren't really considered a meal or a dish but they are my favourite seasonal snacks/desserts. The pandemic lockdowns meant that I couldn't get to places that sell mooncake and missed them completely 😭😭

I don't do holidays, the closest I can muster up is the cactus fruit sorbet I started making. I make it during the summer months, on cue to higher temperatures.

My favorite thing to do is take a roll and put turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, cram it all the bread and eat it like a sandwich. Restaurants have started doing it in recent years, but I've been doing it since I was little in the early 80s so that means I invented it! laughs Also dessert. Especially apple pie. And pumpkin pie. And sweet potato pie. But mostly apple pie.

There's a lot I can't eat anymore, especially not if my family makes it (they're not super accommodating, but I get a free pass on lots of stuff now without many questions or anyone side eyeing me). Green bean casserole used to be one of my favorites, but there's no way I could have it anymore; even if I made it so I could have it, no one else would eat it, and I certainly can't (or at least SHOULDN'T) eat a whole casserole by myself, ha~ I guess now I'd have to say the cranberry orange bread my beau's mum makes for holidays. Or my beau's dad's carrot cake, I ask for it for my birthday consistently if they have the time to make it. >>; I also like homemade cranberry sauce, I eat that stuff plain with a spoon, haha~

I bought a lot of things on here from the Cash Shop! lol

I haven't bought anything in real like though, I haven't really seen anything I just "have to have". I have been looking at eyeshadow pallets on Ulta, but all the ones I want aren't on sale. Lol
