people only being allowed to have so many of their pets in the queue at a time
I hate this idea. The easiest way to win is to have a bunch of pets in the queue at once. Which I think I've demonstrated by having a ton of pets in the queue and winning nearly every month xD I'm pretty sure I only started working on my pets in 2014, and I have . . . 43 pet spotlight winners.
I do really love the idea of being able to see the pets that are up for nomination in one place!
I also like the idea of clearing pet spotlight trophies when a pet is abandoned/adopted.
I don't mind the idea of multiple wins a day, if that what needs to be done to get through the pets that have been sitting in the queue for a long time. But I think they would have to be in the same news post, not different posts. It would be a little depressing to win and see only a couple people commented on your pet while another pet got a lot of comments.
As someone who has spent a lot of time working on my pets, I 100% agree with updating the nomination system.
I'd love to be able to see completed pets more easily. It would be great if there was a page that worked something like the random trick-or-treat link. If you refresh the page, you get a new selection of pets. I feel like that would give users a better chance of having their pet seen, regardless of how well-known they are. (Though for my part, I'd prefer to see at most 3-5 pets at a time as opposed to looking at 20 or more images.)
I'm not a fan of multiple winners per day unless there was some way to separate custom/non-custom overlays. (In other words, Pet A and Pet B are both custom or both non-custom...not one of each.) If Pet A is a common kumos with a fantastic profile and story but they have to stand up to Pet B with an out-of-this-world overlay...visuals are going to capture the viewer.
I wish there were more options to view past winners. The page we have is fine but it would be fantastic to be able to search by more than just month and year.

RE: "multiple winners on a day" combined with "but what if the other pets get more comments than your pet?"
What about when the winner the day before gets a lot of comments? Or, if the one on the day after does? They're different pets by different people and I would not think comparable? Is this so horrible & it makes you feel worse? Is your win somehow lesser now? Oh man, that's not great to think. :(
& the idea of: "imagine if you win and someone else 'wins more' and how you'd feel" Easy~ I decided to give this a chance again, polished up some of the things I've been thinking about. One of them wins(!), and I "only" got a couple of comments. BUT it won on a day where (something like) that game pet from the other day won too AND it got 70+ comments? How does this make me feel? ... I am happy for them and happy for me! :D That does not diminish my happiness about my winning! I got a winner! (and some comments, which are also ok. haha.) Overall, that's a pretty great day for both of us because we are both winners!
Other people's success doesn't lessen your success. Or, for me, it rarely has. For some of you it looks like it would and, obviously, that's not good.
How simple were your profiles?
You should look at the profiles for my pets
They are VERY simple if you ask me. And SonataMoon won. :)
But yeah, I totally get the stress. I've had a few pets kicked out for various reasons. Oshacloud's BG was too bright, GleamSnowette and DreamSample had story issues. I actually wrote a ticket and found out that I had some misconceptions when writing for

dude no way to multiple winners. that would be so disheartening if someone won and was completely ignored while the very next winner that day gets multiple comments. idk man that would just make me feel awful.
@/Ryuu oh, believe me, she's staying there 'till the queue is purged or she gets her damn news post, even if she has to share it with fifty thousand other pets. i've got the It's been 84 years gif saved and everything!
[edit] +1 to limiting the number of pets you can have in the queue i am Very Obviously Biased but. yes. this please
and. i don't know how i feel about multiple winners per day but. if you do that, do separate posts. a midnight one and a lunchtime one maybe. sharing a post and getting no comments would feel worse than seeing two posts with different amounts of comments, i think.
To those who feel bad about 2 winners a day, if this is done daily for example, it might hurt ay first but eventually we will get used to it. Its like why 24 hours when it could be 48hours? Its the same if its moved to 12 hours for example
Us getting used to it would mean that the pet spotlight would become even less of a meaningful event than it is now. Multiple winners every day? If everyone is special, no one is special. Less and less people will take the time to look at and comment on the wins. It cheapens it.
The point about who gets more or less comments is really about attention. What is the point of winning the spotlight if you don't really have a spotlight on your pet? Or if you have to share the spotlight with another pet who may take some of your deserved fame? It's not about comparing yourself to the other winner. It's about not really feeling like you've won at all.
Ok, well if theres only gonna be Some days wheres theres 2x winners, i think they should be the top 50 ones who have been in there the longest. (And that we should know about it) or have x2 same species or one regular and one overlay, etc. Some thing specific that makes them equal but different
I don't mind the idea of multiple winners in a day, as for the thing about one pet getting more comments than others, that happens anyway, one day a pet will get a ton of comments and the next days winner will get a handful if that. And thats just as disheartening I think as having multiple winners on a day and one pet getting more attention than the other.
I don't think there should be a limit on how many pets a user can have nominated, it takes so long to get through them that by the time I've finished working on a pet the one I did before is still in the queue anyway.
Anyway the only ideas I have aren't even related to the getting through winners or such but rather to making things easier for people entering...
Let us just ask for nominations, be able to post "hey this pet is done can you nominate it if you like it?" or something. I mean people do that anyway basically when they post "I think this pet is spotlight ready can you see if theres anything that needs doing" Its just a more subtle round about way of asking
Also I would love if we could see the nomination link on our own pets pages...not to nominate ourselves but to be able to see where it is when coding the profile to make sure its in the right position and looks ok without having to go on another browser and keep switching to get it right
I'd also love to be able to see what queue your pet is in "waiting approval" or "approved" so you at least know where you stand in that regard
Finally when a pet is rejected I think it would be nice to have an option to submit it for 're-review' once the suggested changes are made, especially if its something minor like adding credit for something you did yourself
I think thats everything that has bugged me about the spotlight, apart from the huge amount of time it can take to get a win once you're nominated
Please don't introduce a limit on the number of pets one person can have in the queue! I can see why it would work in theory, but I'm sure there's lots of people like me who finish pets in quick succession (then go ages without finishing any), and end up with several pets all sitting in the queue together.
Definitely agree with in being able to see which queue our pet is in (waiting for approval, or approved) - that'd be really useful :D And also agree with being able to see the nomination link / some text where that would be (maybe "you can't nominate your own pet" could be visible for our pets which are open for nomination, but not yet nominated?).
And I actually like the idea of multiple winners in a day - I know people are saying 'but what if the second pet gets more comments than the first' but that happens at the moment anyway (and has happened with some of mine) with one day's pet getting a small number of comments, and the next day's pet getting 30+ comments.

oh dear god yes please! we can't nominate our own pets anyway so what's the purpose of hiding the link? :v
oh another note, this is something mentioned in a discord but how about pet summaries? basically, alongside the profile you also get a short "summary" box where you can add in a couple lines about your pet! this would show up under the pet image when a pet wins and, in the event we get a page that shows pets eligible for nomination, could show under each pet too i think it could make people more interested in looking at spotlight winners maybe?? idk i think it could be a cute idea haha q v q and it would also be 100% optional so nobody has to write anything if they don't want to
I like all these suggestions - it would be great if we could see what stage of the queue our pets are at.
Also, is there anywhere that saves the rejection reason besides the event? I've had rejections and accidentally deleted the events. And then I forget why a pet was rejected.
I am reading through these responses but I wanted to address one thing
I think I came of wrong with part of what I said. When I say easier, I mean like the ones that are easily readable like with my eyes. And that doesn't mean I don't get to the more difficult ones. I do! There have been times where I have had an empty queue! And that has happened multiple times. I get to all the pets.

Controversial as it may be, I think there needs to be a certain percentage of work done by the owner of a pet. Maybe 75% or something? I don't like seeing pets win where the owner basically either did nothing or did bare minimum while the majority of the work was done by commission.

I totally agree with this. I love it when one of my pets wins, regardless of other wins. There have been a wide variety of spotlight winners as well, thanks to our unbiased judges. Some are simple but appealing and some are amazing on every aspect, while some I don't know why they won, but that's just my opinion.
I don't mind at all if there could be multiple winners at once.
I don't see the necessity of getting rid of a spotlight win. I want to keep mine. There could be a choice for that tho. But I think that the pet should be able to win more than once, with a different profile, and maybe after a certain amount of time. It could be cool to have multiple wins, and they all show on the profile if you want, or just the latest.
By all means please find a way to get all the profiles in the queue that have been there the longest their deserved wins. I also agree with those that said they would like to be able to see what queue their pet is in. Yes, definitely!
Also, if you do not want your pet nominated, simply click "no" on the ready for nomination page. Don't be snide about people who for whatever reason liked your profile enough to nominate it. That's just rude.
Now, I am a person that has spent 100s of hours on their pet profiles. I completely resent that so many people have said that just because I paid for code, a story, and a recolor or a new overlay (and always credit them) that I did nothing. I edited all of my profiles, except one or two. I chose the backgrounds, colors, fonts, placement, and have to experiment usually for hours at a time mixing and matching to get what I want. I give detailed ideas for each of my stories, down to she loves lemon cake for example, and tho most have been written by the amazing Pureflower, I have written a few. I have also recolored some of my pets. The point is I am involved, just like others.
But I also do not care if someone buys a profile or parts thereof. There are so many incredibly talented people on this site that do beautiful work that I can't. Why not take advantage of that? No one should be penalized for it. I love looking at those incredible profiles and tho I do have some envy I do not begrudge them at all. Sometimes I get an idea or two as well.
OMG YES let us be able to see the nominate text while we are working on our profiles to make sure it is in the right place or right size, whatever. I've never understood why we can't. It's fine if we can't click it, but we need to see it. It's ridiculous that I have to have a friend look at it and if there's a problem they have to send a screenshot. It should just be obvious like the rest of the profile.
Also, I agree with if a pet is rejected I want to know exactly why. And it would be wonderful if we can fix it and have a place for a re-review to get back in the queue without another nomination.
Mentioned already but I want to add my +1 to these:
an overview page where we can browse nominatable pets (include the heart signs as well so we can give a heart as well if we like the pet)
Show us in which queue we are. Are we waiting two years to have someone look at our profile, or are we waiting two years because rng sucks more for me than someone else?
Do something about the waiting time. I've had pets in the queue for TWO YEARS. And in the end I just took them out myself because by then the profile broke (not my fault either) or I made drastic changes to the character.
I just gave up on Apple ever winning, I even took him down from nominations about half a year ago because he has been finished for over 5 years and he always got rejected for unclear reasons when staff wasn't able to give a reason for rejection, and after that change to the spotlight was made no one even looked at him. No rejection, no winning ... nothing. He just sat there for years. How am I supposed to be motivated to continue with this site feature like this?
The massive waiting time just left a disgusting taste in my mouth and I'm not sure I ever want to come near the pet spotlight again.
Minus to these:

[edit]Lastly I'm still not getting how staff is expected to check all of the images on a pet's profile to make sure that they're attributed properly before a pet can win. I definitely agree that people should not just steal shit (not pro-ripping people off, obviously) and should only use things that are submitted for free use WITH proper credit to the creator, but I don't see how staff can check all of the images before allowing a pet in the possible winner queue. Staff can't be checking into every single image that are on hundreds of submitted pet profiles for spotlight; that's just a logistics and time thing. And, what do you do if someone gets an image from a misattributed page/site? It doesn't mean that they were purposefully trying to steal.
The image for SonataMoon was created in FireAlpaca while Cherlyn's image was made in Paint 3D.
I remember the site recode breaking profiles! People were PEEVED. I felt bad that I couldn't code good profiles at first, but after that incident I realized that my woeful coding prowess might have been a blessing in disguise....
I read Appel's story and liked it; I'm sorry that he hasn't won. There is a pet spotlight support forum group that helps users with making pets spotlight ready; maybe you could ask for help there and try again to get Appel nominated?
