saw the name of the thread and was like "oh cool this is chill i'll just pop in and say how cute the new food is" but w o w this thread is giving me hives
turn back now. don't bother reading this thread
.: draco dormiens nunquam titillandus :.
Oatmeal needs all of the good food! I'm assuming there's a garden revamp in the works? It's kind of one of those site features you forget and it's kind of sad since it's a pretty good concept.
Also, back to the food truck thing. Maybe hold a contest to design food trucks, similar to that "Design Oatmeal's home" contest? Like design how the food truck looks, the menu, etc. You can even make a template and let people who can't draw food trucks (like MEEEEE) print out to doodle on.
Don't mind the new items, its nice to have some diversity, but I wish there were more beer/alcohol items! Purely because I collect them, which I admit is like hey ok, its not that big a deal. I always looked forward to Alegarten for adding new things to my collection but there's only a few this year.
And as I realized I forgot write my original intention for coming to this thread:
If we're gonna continue to have Gunter in celebrations, I feel like there should be more of a plot re: him murdering his brother. For me it feels weird to find this out a few months ago and then have him throw a festival like new information hasn't come to light! I also want more Anne around in a general sense because she's one of my favorite NPCs, and I'd LOVE for her to have some sort of closure with her dad and uncle.
I don't mind the change, it's good to mix things up a bit so it doesn't get stale/repetitive/boring. This is the first year of the change after all, there's going to some things that can be ironed out or worked better, no one or nothing is perfect.
I did get a slight 'being vegan is better' vibe, but only in a few items that were maybe worded wrongly? And even then I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't read descriptions and such. But I mostly got a positive vibe from the news post, doesn't matter if you are vegan, vegetarian, meat eater or anything else, just be nice to each other, share great food with loved ones, that kinda thing.
As someone who enjoys meat, I certainly didn't feel attacked or anything like that, maybe a little uncomfortable about the shirt already mentioned here.
Some of the suggestions to incorporate the gardens and general environmental improving stuff is amazing, maybe that's something we can look forward to in the future!
I think the added vegan stuff was to balance out last year's all meat releases for the same festival, so it's a nice change of pace. The wording could have been a bit better since I think that's what seemed so off-putting for some users, but I personally didn't mind it.
I don't think there were any new items for Alegarten last year because of how everything got slammed together.
I like that there's a bunch of new vegan foods because it's great to have the variety in onsite items. But it comes with the cringiness and (passive)aggressiveness of a fresh convert or a campus crusader on top of being an overall weird theme change. Peka-boo might have been a better vehicle to introduce a bunch of new cute/awesome/delicious limited time vegan and vegetarian foods. Doing this just took away our beer and brat fest and replaced it with drama and doesn't match the fun, variety, and character the food trucks brought.
While I'm whining, there's only one new book. I has a disappoint.
Ignoring the rest of the thread in favor of just posting some artwork appreciation. Dayum artists, these pixels be mouth watering!!
10/10 would attend this feast and would leave feeling overfed. P:
Just echoing how sad I was to see only 1 book.
also i gotta second bc food cis are consistently my favorite art on the site
The artwork on all of the new items is fantastic! I love that Rumi is the keeper of the vegan merch shop. And thank you for keeping the older items available. I missed Alegarten the last couple of years and my inventory is full of booze right now. Seriously, my pet is trashed and hopefully won't die of alcohol poisoning. I also would love to see more books, maybe next year! Also hoping we can get some achievements and maybe some fun forum titles, like "milks nuts" or "is a judgmental vegan" lol.
Also, um...Gunter murdered his brother? As I mentioned, I missed the last couple, so...what?! Hoping we are going to get a participation event announced soon to find out more about this!
Hopefully people will post with more feedback on the event and not just the anti-vegan sentiments. Thanks for keeping things fresh here. I'm looking forward to seeing future themes and ideas. You guys are doing a great job with events and interesting, creative and gorgeous new item releases, in general.

I was happy to see the announcement of the new theme. I understand why some people feel excluded as it doesn't have a subject matter that interests them, however feel it's suitable as veganism is a growing way of life.
It seems quite a few people have a problem with the t-shirt slogans, but these are just typical t-shirts you'd find for sale by numerous vegan groups. I wouldn't choose to wear any of them, but c'mon they're not exactly offensive because you don't agree with the underlying message.
And Almonds, Agave, Cashews, Soy? Well the sourcing of ingredients is up to the individual to look into and make informed choices about. Subeta isn't endorsing them as 100% cruelty free products, they're just examples of products you find in vegan stores. I understand that people are annoyed to hear some vegans and pro-vegan groups saying veganism is the best diet for the environment or similar when there are a variety pro's and con's to many food stuffs that perhaps aren't spotlighted as they should be.
Not all vegans think they are superior and doing everything right, I'm just trying to do the best I can to minimise harm to others and my impact on the planet in a practical way.
Yeah, it's canon that Gunter killed his brother Bubbles (now a zombie in the Underground), by drowning him in one of the brewing utilities. We learned a bit about Bubbles' side of the story when he was the Friendly Thursday challenger back in February.
Now Gunter is the Friendly Thursday challenger for this month, but we haven't gotten any more about his side of the story yet (whether it was a dumb prank gone wrong or intentional). So people are curious about it. Either way, it's terrible that his brother died, but I think there would be a bit more sympathy for Gunter if it was an accident. And the Subetapedia entry for him does say he feels guilty and regretful about it.
Friendly reminder for everyone to remain civil and discuss your feedback here only--this isn't a place for full on debate.
I raise animals for meat and eggs and wasn't offended by any of these items, this choice wasn't made by people who all have the same diet. I interpreted the friends not food item as a Finding Nemo nod, and I found it amusing personally. That isn't to say others aren't or can't be offended, but I just wanted to let you all know this wasn't developed in an echo chamber. We've been navigating real world items and events into our own lore, and had been teasing this twist for some time now. The beer and sausages were getting a little repetitive anyway--and that's coming from me :P
Please continue this politely!
I have no problem with the event and the items, with one exception.
Agave Syrup production is absolutely destructive to the environment. While it does not involve animals, the waste produced to get the syrup (both for sweetener use and the production of tequila) is humongous.
I'm really not at ease with something so environmental unfriendly to be seen as the "cruelty-free" version of honey.
Pollution and the waste produced by agave culture are also a form of cruelty towards our environment and living space, and I really really wish that the Agave Syrup item was just sent to Liz's shop instead.
Refund people who bought it, and make it a normal restockable, please.
This item might be vegan, but I feel like it doesn't fit in the spirit of Neugarten.
I'm not asking for it to not exist...I just don't want people to assume Agave is a good alternative if you are concerned about the planet. It really isn't.
"I interpreted the friends not food item as a Finding Nemo nod"
I recognized that reference as well (and it made me smile). It's too bad so much controversy erupted over it, but maybe Finding Nemo isn't that well-known among the Subeta community.
Wow, I'm not too familiar with vegan foods but that sounds depressing. It's sad when people create such products in order to help the environment but the alternative has worse flaws than the original..... :(

While I got a slight "vegans are better than everyone else!" vibe at first, I just shrugged it off and began drooling over all the GORGEOUS new items we got out of this. I think the most unfortunate thing to come out of this event is the fact that people are interpreting it as a sign that they can go ahead and wage war against the "other side". The veganism vs. non-veganism debate is all fine and good, but I don't think it's unreasonable to put politics aside and see this event as nothing more than a celebration of super cool vegan food!
Especially when the news post also contains this:
Anyway. Did I mention how much I love the new items? Because hot DAMN. I'm vegetarian so literally every food item released for this event makes me hungry. I'm not quite certain how the Subeta artists continue to do this to me.

No such thing as too much beer and sausages. Perish the thought.
I definitely caught the Finding Nemo reference and I'm sure a lot of other people did; the overall message of the item is what proves a bit.. worrying, so I didn't pay any mind to the fact that it's a reference.
It pushes the whole notion that "don't eat animals, be friends with animals instead", which just troubles me a lot with all the environmental issues and implications that come with that. It's completely possible to care deeply for animals, to acknowledge their emotional capabilities and their significance, while still eating meat. Honestly, that message + the "being vegan is to be cruelty-free!" (even though many of its options aren't that, or just aren't great for the environment), is what bugs me the most out of all of this. I just hope that people can get past the fact that, yeah, it is a reference, but it does push a questionable black-and-white message when the reality is a lot more gray.
