"It&;s officially 20 days till Christmas day folks! Are you excited yet! I know I am! Winter decided today was a good day for a storm. The Big Guy had a few words with him because the storm knocked out power to the toy shop..not good this close to the big day. It will be double time for the next few days. My offer to help was turned down...I guess they haven&;t forgotten about my incident yet..ah well just means I can focus more on the story! Speaking of, let Day 5 begin!"

The next few days flew by. Once Spirit was moved upstairs, he felt more confident to leave the tub and explore. He attempted to explore the Christmas tree, but Henrietta was able to shut that down. Instead she offered up some sparkly puff balls to tempt him away. It seemed to have worked. He also discovered that socks were an amazing toy, especially if they were on a humans foot. "ouch!"

Henrietta was surprised to find that Spirit was very social. She wasn&;t sure if he was just naturally outgoing, or if he had a home at one time. Not only did he love scritches under the chin, but he would show his belly for rubs anytime he could. This was such great news! It meant that he would be able to find a forever home quickly.

By Monday evening though, it was apparent that Spirit might be getting a bit too comfy in the apartment. After evening snack time, Henrietta headed down to the shop to feed Jube Jube, Bean Bunny and ensure the doors were secure. Jube Jube was having one of her fits and did not want to go to bed, as apparent by the fact that her water dish was thrown on the floor. "You know, this is becoming a weekly tradition for you. Perhaps if you didn&;t fuss so much I&;d be able to find you a nice home." Although, Henrietta had a soft spot for the feisty bird and wasn&;t really trying to find a home anyway. Not that she would admit it out loud.

Since Jube Jube insisted on more attention, the only option was to bring her upstairs and let her fly around a bit. This had been successfully tested about 2 times before, so 3rd time&;s the charm right? When Henrietta headed back upstairs with the bird on her shoulder, she couldn&;t seem to find Spirit. She perched Jube Jube on the fireplace and went hunting. Not in the tree, not under the couch, not hidden in the clean pile of laundry. Nope, of all places Spirit was IN Henrietta&;s bed.

This was of course a great sign, it meant that snuggles were in the future! She decided not disturb the grey floof just yet, and went back to the living room. Was time to work on Christmas cards. So while the Muppets Christmas Carol aired on the television, and Jube Jube was taking turns flying from the fireplace to the tree, to the coffee table and back up to the fireplace, Henrietta sat on the floor and wrote her well wishes in cards for family and friends.

After about an hour, Spirit decided he had had enough of the big comfy human bed and sauntered back into the living room. At first, he was oblivious to Jube Jube. Then a flutter noise peeked his curiosity. Henrietta stopped, and waited to see what he would do. The cockatiel had flown down to the coffee table again and was dancing around the pile of completed cards. Spirit slowly walked from his snack bowl towards the coffee table. He didn&;t seem to be scared, but he also didn&;t seem to be too enthusiastic either. Of course, that could change at any moment, and Henrietta was ready to take action if needed. Jube Jube gave a great SQWAK and stared down Spirit as he approached. The grey floof came up close to the bird, and she froze. Spirit on the other hand continued all the way and then nose booped Jube Jube right on her beak. He gave her a few sniffs and then sat down on his haunches. Jube Jube did a dance around the cards again and then flew into the tree.

"Well, that went swimmingly." She reached out to scratch one of his ears. "Spirit, you little handsome fella, you continue to amaze me." Instantly he started to purr, and then crawled into her lap. Yup, he definitely had made himself at home.

"Nothing like a purring kitty in ones lap! Well..so I&;ve been told. I don&;t actually have a lap... OH and before I forget, CF wanted to say ty to the lovely anon who sent me..er her..the yummy hot chocolate, and the kitty with the soft blanket. So very sweet! <3.

See you tomorrow!"

"Hey guys, I can&;t stay long today. I forgot to take some important mail to the post office, so I gotta fly them to the right people tonight. Don&;t tell CF k? I hate disappointing her. I didn&;t forget the next chapter though! So onward and upwards for me, but you go on and read away. :)"

It was Tuesday morning, and Henrietta decided to test Spirit. She needed to determine if he would attempt to run away, how he would interact with strangers and any other animals that came in. Thus, he was permitted to follow her down the stairs and into the shop. He was very confident, as was apparent by his happy tail and walk, which Henrietta thought of more as a strut. Instantly he went exploring.

Henrietta went about her morning chores as usual, and after an hour the shop was opened. Not ten minutes later Liza came charging in carrying something. "Rita! I have been staring at your door for the past thirty minutes. It was driving me nutz as to what this was." She handed over another box, exactly the same as the one the snow globe came in. "It&;s got to be from your SS!"

Now, Henrietta had spoken with Liza on the weekend regarding the snow globe, and after a lengthy conversation, they both agreed that Liza was not one to even think of planning and pulling off something this secretive, unless it involved boys. So the mysterious SS was still unknown.

Henrietta placed the box on the cash counter. They sat in silence for several moments taking turns staring at the package and then each other. Just as Henrietta went to open it, Spirit jumped up and scared both the ladies. "Son of a Nutcracker! Spirit, you little minx you!" He sought out attention from Liza first, and then rubbed his face on the box. "Yes, well I don&;t see your name on this so go pester Bean Bunny." He of course just sat there instead. Cats.

She proceeded to open the box, and just like before, inside was another snow globe! She carefully lifted it out of the box to admire it. It has the same silver bottom, but this time it had a photo inside of it. It was a picture of her and her late grandmother Henni, her namesake. Henrietta appeared to be about four years old, and was sitting on Santa&;s lap while her grandmother stood next to them, all wearing genuine smiles. She took in the picture for several long moments. It wasn&;t a picture she remembered seeing before and was so very grateful that someone had sent it. Henrietta missed her grams very much, as she was more of mother than a grandmother. Her parents passed away when she was just a baby, so Henni had to step in and raise her. Henni&;s husband died in the war, so Henrietta never knew her grandfather.

After a few more minutes of silence, she wiped a small tear from her eye. Liza wrapped her arms around her and gave her a big squeeze. "Oh, look Rita! There is a card too. Would you like me to read it?" "Yeah, Ok"

This time of year may be hard on us all, as loved ones who are gone are in our thoughts so much more. Just remember that without them and the love they shared, we wouldn&;t be who we are today.

Stay amazing, and let your love shine to those around you this December, and all year.

SS

"Wow. Even I&;m speechless, and I&;m never speechless"

"Whomever this SS is, they sure know how to make a girl feel all mushy. And where the heck did they get this picture? I&;ve never seen it before, plus I have all my family photos under my bed. And there is no way someone was in my place without my knowledge"

"What about your Uncle Frank, or your cousin Minnie? I know you haven&;t seen them in a while, but you at least still keep in touch?"

"I spoke to Minnie a few weeks ago, to see if she wanted to come for the holidays, and she said that her youngest was in a concert on Christmas eve, so they wouldn&;t be able to make it. I don&;t think she would have baby pictures of me though? No, I recon it&;s someone else. I&;d sure like to know who, so I can thank them with a great big hug."

She placed the new snow globe next to the first one on the shelf, and went to grab the box to move it from the counter. To her and Liza&;s astonishment, Spirit hopped into the box and curled himself into a ball. He seemed to have claimed it as his new napping spot. Liza and Henrietta both laughed out loud.

Just then, the door swung open again, and a burly of a man walked in. "Mic!" both ladies cried.

"Hiya! I just got back from my deliveries. I didn&;t think it would take a whole day to do. Probably didn&;t help that I stopped for home made maple syrup sticks and apple cider at one of my stops. Mmmm mmm I love me some maple. Anyway, on with the story!"

"You&;re back! How was your trip?", Henrietta asked. In a more grizzly than husky voice, Mic said, "Yup. I&;m home. Trip was alright." Yup, that was Mic, a man of few words. He owned the flower shop across the street. It was always hard to picture Mic, as a florist. He may appear to be a hard shell on the outside, but on the inside he was a marshmallow. One of the many reasons that both Liza and Henrietta adored him.

Mic had been to a florist convention. Who knew those things even existed. He went every year and always came home with a prize for one of his displays. He just had a knack for matching the flower for the right situation.

"Did you win first prize again?", Liza asked. "Yup. For my take on a flower cornucopia. It was the purple flowers I used that put it over the top. I love purple."

"Well it is a very cheery color, and congrats!" Henrietta smiled.

"I need to go open shop, just wanted to pick up Bean Bunny. I hope he was no trouble."

"Nope, none at all! I think Jube Jube might miss the company though." She walked over and picked the bunny up and brought him to Mic. Mic cooed at the animal and stroked his ears. (see what I mean? Big ole marshmallow)

"Did I miss any news?"

Liza went into a big animated story telling about Henrietta&;s SS, the snow globes and about Spirit. "You&;re not SS are you?" Her eyebrows almost accusatory.

Mic stared at her but showed no expressional change. "No. But the snow globes are very beautiful. Whoever it is, they seem to know you very well. When you find out who it is, I will make a floral arrangement to thank them. I&;m thinking, Silver tipped white roses, white and red poinsettias, and gold painted twigs." He furrowed his brows. "I&;ll work on it. I will check in later. We should do a potluck dinner this weekend. I have some news to share. Come on BB, I have some fresh strawberries for you." And with that, Mic exited.

The girls both looked at each other and nodded. Mic was definitely not Henrietta&;s SS. But what news could he have to share? It&;s already been a crazy December, what else could possibly make it crazier?

"hmm have all the characters been introduced? Do you know who SS is yet? Well don&;t be alarmed if you don&;t! Still two more weeks of story to tell!"

"Hey Peeps!! I had a small reprieve from holiday chores today. Thought I&;d pop in and see how things were going."

"Hey CF! So glad you got a break today. I know you&;ve been going crazy!"

"That is very true. To be expected at this time of year though. :) So glad that I can count on you to assist this year. How&;s the story progressing?"

"Err, well, I mean up till now I&;ve been right on time with the chapters, and I&;m pretty sure everyone is enjoying it! Just..well I accidentally left today&;s chapter down at the snowball fight field." hangs head

"Oh my. Well, we all have days when things go wrong. You still have lots of time to tell the story. Don&;t worry yourself too much. We still have a lovely gift to send today!"

"Yes! that is very true! Phew, that should smooth things over then, and they won&;t be so upset with me."

"Oh, I don&;t think anyone can be upset with you that long Rodney, you&;re too adorable, :)"

"D&;aww, shucks. Thanks CF. Can I buy you a cup of peppermint hot chocolate before we get back to work?"

"A reindeer after my own heart. Until tomorrow everyone, be good to each other and stay safe!"

"TaDa! I am here! There was some technical difficulties last night, probably due to the Elves break dancing contest. I heard it was off the hoof. I of course was too busy to attend. Someone had been eating the Snowmen&;s noses, so I was out around the North Pole replacing them. Poor fellows. You can imagine how hard it is to sneeze without a nose! I did not lose today&;s chapter though! So here it is!"

The rest of the week flew by. This time of year there was always a steady stream of the usual customers coming into the store. By Friday afternoon, Henrietta had to call in a second order for the next week. They had almost cleaned her out. This year&;s big seller was a sports theme line of items. Beds, toys, blankets and treats. Who knew animals would love sports so much. It helped that the closest cities sports teams were all doing great.

Even though this was a small town, a lot of the city people came out to enjoy the quaintness of town living, and enjoy the local festivities. This year, the mayor had created an outdoor hockey rink, complete with bleachers and a very old, very rickety zambonie. It was used for regular skating and every Saturday afternoon a local hockey game. It was the biggest attraction this season, on top of the Tree lighting and of course the fundraiser on Christmas Eve. Local businesses were booming.

Henrietta didn&;t just do in-store business either. Two years ago she developed her own line of pet treats, all made in her kitchen. Using only natural and whole ingredients, they lacked the additives and preservatives that most store bought ones had. She initially only sold them in her shop, and provided the shelter with them for special occasions. Margo had shipped some of them off to another shelter several cities away, and they went over so well with adopters and staff that they requested more be shipped on a regular bases. Things just grew from there and after a few months she had a local teen who was a tech create a website for her. Now, she sold all over North America. This meant that there was always a batch of something in her oven, just to keep up with orders.

Spirit was in his glory, as he greeted all the customers and inspected most purchases, to ensure everything was in order. Everyone got enjoyment out of him, and he got even more pets and attention. Jube Jube was her cranky ole self as usual, and still no one had offered to adopt her. Henrietta felt for the crazy bird, so she brought her upstairs now every night. Surely someone would fall for her soon. She deserved a forever home too.

She had to close up shop around 3 today, as there were a few errands that needed to be done before it got late. She was delivering an order of her dog treats to the Shelter, and Sprit was due for another check up. He didn&;t know that yet though. It took her four tries to get him into the carrier. The last time, he only got in because she took the top part off and he must have thought &;If I fits, I sits&;, because he jumped right in. She was able to put the top back on before he jumped out. "It&;s okay buddy, this is the safest way for you to travel. The vet just wants to make sure you&;re doing great, and then we&;ll come home afterwards. I promise you extra cuddles and treats when we get back." She poked a finger through the carrier bars and Spirit rubbed his head on it. Henrietta then packed the treat boxes and Spirit into her car and started the 20 minute ride to the Shelter.

"I wonder if she makes reindeer treats too? :D Until tomorrow!"

"Yawn Sundays. Gotta love sleeping in after a long week. My tummy is already gurgling for the brunch waiting for me. On to today&;s chapter shall we!"

The journey to the Vet was pretty normal. Roads were clear, and it was early in the day that traffic was minimal. Henrietta had the radio turned to Christmas music and she sang along, very out of key, to her favourites. Spirit seemed to enjoy it too, as he also sang along. It was a hilarious scene had anyone been watching.

Margo met them on the stairs to the Shelter. "Hiya! How&;s our little man doing?"

"Oh, he seems to have settled in pretty well. Everyone who comes into the shop enjoy seeing him and dishing out attention. He&;s even been great with Jube Jube. He&;ll make a great pet for someone."

"That&;s fantastic! Come on in, Jasper is waiting for you inside. You&;re his last patient tonight."

Jasper was a city vet, but he came out to the shelter once a week. He would also come out whenever Margo called. Henrietta had the notion that Jasper was sweet on Margo, and Margo was sweet on him. They just hadn&;t done anything about it yet. It was very cute though.

Margo took Spirit into the office while Henrietta unloaded her car. By the time she was done, Margo and Jasper walking out chatting about something very funny, as they were both laughing.

"Hi Henrietta. You have taken great care of Spirit. His eye is all good, he&;s put on some good weight, and everything else seems good with him." He was cuddling Spirit in his arms. I guess the kitty didn&;t hold any grudges to the poking and prodding he was going through a few moments ago.

"Aww thanks Jasper. I think part of it is his temperament. He&;s such a great cat. Margo, the boxes are all unloaded by the main desk. I don&;t know if I will be able to bring more over before Christmas, so I hope it&;s enough."

"Thanks! Well I hope we don&;t sell out then. It&;s just been so crazy. Today alone I had 10 adoptions! I think that&;s a record. If that keeps up, I could potentially have homes for every animal this year! I&;m really hoping the Fundraiser brings more people in too."

"Man, that would be the best Christmas gift for you and the animals this year. I truly hope it happens. I&;m looking forward to the Fundraiser. I have my donation all set to be bid on."

The Fundraiser would be an assortment of baskets up for auction. Everyone and anyone could bid on any basket and the winning bid would get the contents inside. So far, every small business had offered to donate a basket. The contents could range from a free pedicure, to full car maintenance for a year, or even dancing lessons for 10 weeks.

There would also be music, dancing and food. Basically it was a big Social that everyone was invited too. All proceeds would go to the Shelter of course. It was sure to be a great time, and was the most anticipated event of the year.

"OH, Speaking of the Fundraiser, there has been a slight change of plans. Liza called me up earlier in the week and had this great idea. Not only should we auction off the baskets everyone has donated, but she thought we&;d be able to bring in more money by auctioning off people for dates! So I spoke to all the eligible single people in town, and am up to nine volunteers. Nine isn&;t really a round number, so I put you down as well. Liza said you wouldn&;t mind."

Henrietta spluttered, and just stared at Margo. Liza what? Why? Oh she was so dead. "I..I..I don&;t think..I mean..who would want..no, I don&;t think that I&;m the right choice. You should ask someone else."

"um..Well I sort of already spent the funds and printed up the posters. I don&;t think I can stop it now." Margo was wringing her hands. "I&;m sorry Henrietta, really I thought you were fine with it!"

Henrietta, closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. As much as she wanted to strangle Liza, she couldn&;t let the Shelter down. She did owe Margo a lot for helping her online business. "Ok, I&;ll do it. I&;ll see if I can make Liza bid on me though, so the shelter can at least make something for my embarrassment."

Jasper and Margo looked at each other and then beamed back at her. "Yes! Thank you so much. You won&;t regret it."

Somehow, Henrietta didn&;t agree with that.

"Oh that Liza, always causing trouble. But it&;s out of love right? haha"
