I hadn't heard of it until recently. A friend of mine who also works in higher ed mentioned it to me earlier this month. Like the other three organizations I sent money to this week, it has a four-star (the highest) rating at Charity Navigator. I use that site to filter out sham charities that keep most of your donation for themselves and spend very little actually doing charitable work.

I became much more aware and interested in the situation in rural Africa after the Chibok school kidnappings in 2014. Boko Haram militants broke into a school and kidnapped 276 teenage women for the purpose of child sex trafficking. This wasn't the first mass kidnapping, but it was the one that got my attention.
