Any particular book style you enjoy reading? Author?

Hello. :)

I am starting to think I am keeping the box forever with the books in it. PLUS side...longer I keep it, the more I have been adding to it. COULD be the reason it is rather big now. Lots of small things start adding up.

I enjoy reading novels mostly, ones with good writing and editing, character driven, and original. Sometimes I read short stories too, but more often novels. I read a lot of science fiction novels, a variety of fantasy, mystery, and historical fiction, and occasionally romance or horror. I like to read harder to categorize books that might fall into multiple genres. Also "magical realism" and possibly "paranormal" and "weird" fiction and experimental fiction and sometimes I also read older works and classics and mythology and biography. And probably I'm leaving some things out. I like books to have style - but I don't just like one style. I like any style done really well. I like some styles done passably well, and I don't like even my favorite style if it's done badly.

I try to avoid anything too gory, too depressing, or too full of suspense. Mostly because I like to read and I find those things make me stop reading because of unhappiness... I'm not tough minded :D I prefer to avoid stories that use horrifying things happening to excite the reader because I find them more upsetting than exciting. I'm not saying I will refuse to read any book that contains torture or rape or children dying or other bad stuff... just that if it was added in to make the book more thrilling or suspenseful or that kind of thing, no thank you, I prefer less thrilling and less suspenseful. Same with characters doing things because the plot told them to even if the thing is both stupid and not what they seem like they'd do based on previous characterization. Ugh.

I also try to avoid books that aren't edited well or have a lot of mistakes or awkward phrasing in them because it interrupts my enjoyment of the story to mentally correct it.

Authors... hm... I haven't got time to list favorite authors now, but I'll do so tomorrow if I remember. I probably have 50-60 favorite authors...

I tend to stick with same or similar authors. If I start a series I stick it out tho even if it wasn't the greatest. I do have a few tho that I read book 1 and havent gotten around to book 2 or beyond yet.

I am the opposite. If I get bored with an author or series I have no problem dropping it after book 1, or book 5, or wherever. I figure at my age I have to make every reading hour count and can't waste time on books I don't want to read anymore.

I also don't like the feeling of being too obsessed with a particular book or series, so I have lately made a point not to read two books by the same author or in the same series in a row. I try to read at least 3 other unrelated books in between.

Anyway, favorite authors. I'll probably forget a few but here's a list ... approximately oldest to newest, but not exactly:

Jane Austen, Anthony Trollope, Daphne Du Maurier, J R R Tolkien, Mary Stewart, Diana Wynne Jones, Ellen Raskin, Barbara Paul, Donald Westlake, Laurence Block, Dick Francis, Theodore Sturgeon, Stanislaw Lem, Walter Tevis, Milan Kundera, Lloyd Biggle, John Brunner, Ursula Le Guin, Roberta Gellis, Roger Zelazny, Shelby Hearon, Norman Spinrad, C J Cherryh, Elizabeth Lynn, Madeline L'Engle, Vernor Vinge, Joan Vinge, Sarah Bird, Iain Banks, Samuel Delaney, Christopher Priest, Octavia Butler, Amy Tan, Elmore Leonard, Bruce Sterling, Walter Jon Williams, Ellen Kushner, Greg Egan, Tim Powers, Terry Pratchett, Steven Brust, Rosemary Kirstein, Robin McKinley, Sharon Shinn, Neal Stephenson, Lois Bujold, Connie Willis, Joan Slonczewski, Nancy Kress, Neil Gaiman, Jennifer Weiner, Haruki Murakami, Jo Walton, John Scalzi, Seanan Mcguire, Sarah Monette

I think that's most of them. Plenty almost-favorites that didn't quite make the cut... or who used to be favorites but I have lost part of my taste for their work like Asimov, Clarke, Heinlein, Silverberg, Orson Scott Card, Larry Niven, a lot of classic SF writers like that. Maybe their work doesn't stand up this decade as well as it did 20 years ago? Something like that.

I haven't been active chatting lately anywhere. Just haven't been up to it. So nice to pop in tho :)

I think I have read a book or two by some of those authors. I probably tend to read more "trash" style books. Books without much substance. My favorite is Stephen King and I know he is on your to much gore/horror list. I don't read an entire series in a row usually. Sometimes the next one isn't out and have to wait for it. But I have finished a few series to the end. I was up to 30-50 books a year, but this year I haven't read much of anything. My mind just isn't focused enough to get into a book. The last one took me 3 months to read and it wasn't that much substance to it.

I actually really like Stephen King, not quite to the point of his work being my favorite but I enjoy it very much. I do tend to sometimes skim parts that seem too suspenseful or gory, but not that often. He seems to have a good grasp on how much would be too much and not quite goes to that point for me.

I don't like every book of his but many of them I like a lot. My favorites of his earlier works are Firestarter and Dead Zone, and of more recent works I like From a Buick 8 and Lisey's Story best. I also really enjoyed Duma Key, Dreamcatcher, and Tommyknockers as well as Hearts in Atlantis. The most recent of his books that I read was 11/22/63 and I liked it pretty well.

I probably read about 50 books a year also... not sure exactly. Might be a bit more, maybe as much as 75 a year.

edit: ooh, I knew I'd forget one ... forgot to put Robertson Davies. He's definitely a favorite writer of mine.

thanks! glad you like it. I like yours too today, the red heart on the black dress looks great, and the hairstyle, and the roses, and all of it!
