A CI is a 'custom item' and it is referencing the 64x64 item image that accompanies the overlay when you submit. A redline is when someone marks or draws on your image to show you what they're talking about.

As for the shading you've asked for help with; I think it may be a bit too soft and blended. Subeta has a 'cell shaded' style which means you can distinctly see the different sections of shading rather than them blending together. There is also a small piece (on the hair on the top of the head, the piece that is almost directly centered) that looks a little too dark and makes the shading look a bit ambiguous to me. (I also know you did not ask about this, but to hopefully save you a bit of time later, I did want to mention that the line art looks a little heavy / thick when the image is resized to the size it will be on site.) This definitely is looking like a big improvement from the last time you posted it. You're headed in the right direction! I think a little more tweaking and you might be able to give it a try submitting it and seeing what staff think.

Thank you very much! My new problem is my laptop no longer works and I'm borrowing my Mom's and all my layers are on mine. Sooo...now I have to start from the beginning and that won't be for awhile. And to top it off it's not a touch screen and I haven't learn to draw with the built in mouse. lol But I will keep this in mind so as soon as I can I will fix them. And thanks for the tip about the line art. I didn't even notice.

Hey there! Based on the images you posted last month, I think your shading has improved. ^_^ It looks less soft and you're doing a good job of shading individual strands/sections of hair. The biggest criticism I can think of is that it looks like you copied/pasted one of the little "poofs" dangling at the bottom and turned flipped it to be horizontal, instead of shading each poof individually - so that it looks like one has shadows on the left side, one has shadows on the right. When shading overlays, it helps to remember that the "light source" is in the top left corner, so pretty much all your shadows are going to fall on the right side of the HA. I hope that helps!

Your CI is a great concept! :) It still looks a little unfinished/lacking in details, though. Also it should pretty much fill up the square canvas, instead of leaving a big empty space around it if possible!

Can you use color schemes from official items: Yes. I do this all the time :)

I think the overlay is looking ready for you to try submitting it! For the item image though, it needs to fill the square a bit better. Right now, it's very small / off centered in the square. Something more like this: (And make sure the BG is white and not transparent for the item image!)

I think the overall cartoony style will be fine as long as the final shaded version matches subeta standards. It's very cute! Honestly the only way to know for sure is to finish it up and submit it! usually handles the CW queue and if she rejects a CW she typically gives a good explanation as to why so you can make appropriate changes.

Yeah, I think the overall style works fine! Though right now it's only flats, and shading will be added, right? Subeta does have rules about light sources (should be coming from the top left) and layers of shading (3-5), but like I said Jessi is great about giving feedback if the submitted version needed to be altered to fit Subeta's desired style. ^_^

I only just decided to redraw it. Before going further with it I just wanted to get your opinions if this is any better or if it looks about the same?

I tried to make it more angled (per tartlette) and reduced the amount of feathers for the shrunk visibility (per feral) And if you don't mind me asking what you think of the quality of the outer line (pertaining to thickness and smoothness) It should be thicker and smoother than the old one, but I don't know if it comes off as too thick. What do you need help with --- HI. basically when i resize this file it acquires a ton of grey pixels in the line art no matter what i do to it to resize it. my best guess is the line art is too thin or i'm resizing it in a way that is stupid, or there's a transparency issue? but i would like a confirmation of what is causing this if possible. this is a new recolour, but it happened with the original item also (unfortunately i remembered this after i decided to commit to this recolour). if there's a solution that isn't a) redrawing the line art or b) fixing the tiny resized file like i have been, i would be very grateful because i like this item a lot!

the grey is between the line art and the colours in a few places as well, which is why this is really confusing to me because it almost looks like a transparency issue but i don't think it is. using photoshop (CS6 and now 2020), i have resized it the following ways: image -> resize -> multiple different options (bilinear smoothest, sharpen, etc). export -> resized png -> multiple different options (blinear smoothest, sharpen, etc). no changes whatsoever, always comes out like the above two linked images.

Was there a denial --- no i have fixed the resized file manually both times by gently altering the line art with a tiny 1px brush. to the detriment of my sanity.

My guess is that the flat base layer is too close to the edges, so that when you resize, it takes the edges of the white in account and kind of "enmeshes" it with the lineart.

I selected the flat base and and then did select > modifiy > contract by 1 to make the edges less far (there's a couple gaps that appear afterwards, you can fill those manually.

I also duplicated the lineart in the back and added a gaussian blur 0.4 to help soften.

edit: YUP you both solved my problem, thank you thank you thank you!! and when i cleaned up the .psd to share, i'm pretty sure i found what i messed up which was that i forgot i resized my original sketch and then ALSO had to reline the whole thing because the flowers were too detailed to read when they were resized and they just looked like white spaghetti...and i'm positive i had leftover bleed from doing that quick and dirty instead of properly lmao
