Haven't seen the land but ouch.
Well, at least it isn't some medieval fantasy land with a Nordic sounding name? :P
Then, maybe staff should go and stop trying to say "Oh, we want to make Subeta its own lore and world and cultures" when it's pretty much reskinned earth cultures. Saherimos was bad, and this is bad.
I'm going with what the staff is telling us. They're telling us they want to go away from real world things. What's wrong with telling "Man, this is good, but why is the name in a real world language if you want to get away from real world things?
I just want staff to be coherent with its world building.
To be honest, Centropolis bothers me more than the new land. The name of the city comes from a blending of ancient human dialects, centro meaning "in the center" (...) Also known as spanish. (Don't know if it means that in other languages too)
I like Shengui Guo. I would like to read about it in the SubetaPedia soon.
Looking at Shenkuu I can see that it was likely based on the actual real life city, Zhangjiajie, or rather the Wulingyuan Scenic Area which is in that area. It's pretty famous when looking at East-Asian landscapes, and I did know of it and look it up further in our research, but knew it wasn't something that I wanted to mainly focus on, the shape wasn't right for what we'd invisaged for the new city. We'd decided early on on the Subeta species that would be native to Shengui Guo, the Chelon being one of them. We decided on a slight Chelon theme, and to go with the feeling of isolation/being cut off I had imagined the city we'd created to be in a large crater on an island - keeping to itself. I drew a lot of inspiration from the cities of Fenghuang and Guilin as well as several other cities/towns and imagery such as tea fields, as well as from Chinese and Japanese prints.
There is similarity because this is the imagery of East-Asia. There has been demand for a land like this for many years. We have several hundred items already on site that will be moved here. We are planning on adding several hundred more based on suggestions that until now we found difficult to fulfill with nowhere particular to go. The potential for this land is amazing and inspiring and we can't wait to continue developing it. As time goes by, and the rest of Subeta enters into the 'new' land again, cultures will mix and change and become ever different, much like the real world.
The name came from several different translations, although we have some multilingual staff members who were able to help out with this. Other users have figured this out already, and even given a few translations that we hadn't even known, which is awesome because they all /work/. We've done other language translations before with Saherimos (I believe that's a translation of 'Sacred Sands' from another language) and Ytiva.
I am very proud of my teams work on this.
poor ms paint skills aside, i honestly don't see how the two lands are overly similar? they draw inspiration from similar sources but the end result and introduction are definitely very different even WITH the plot.
besides how weird would it be for a new land to just pop up like "hey look at this" like... that makes no sense to me
I mean, if we want to really be original and not base it on any earth cultures, we might need to rename everything Akladjieoplaskjf. :c
whoops forgot to post my original post but I think covered most of it whee c:
Difference is that Centropolis and Delphi were named in what, 2004? Yeah, the names are subpar, but they predate the "We want to do away with real world references"
Saherimos and Shengui Guo don't have that excuse.
Arctic Frost is actually called Ytiva. Not much better, but hey.
Centropolis was named in like, 2004. Way before the idea of "Subeta is its own land and culture" was brought up.
So what if the name is Mandarin? I like that it is
This sums up my opinion. I don't see how it's a rip off....
as someone who does do a lot of worldbuilding in their spare time like
..did you expect all the land names to be in english (also a real world language)??? does the entire world just go off of one language??? /?? ?? ?
bad worldbuilding is giving one singular language, culture, and people to an entire world

I expected it to be asian INSPIRED.
I did not expect it, or want it, to be taken from an actual asian language. Especially as a straight up translation.
But no, I didn't expect it to be New Omen Islands or whatever. Just, not something taken from Google Translate.
For goodness sakes everybody, I'm not saying it's a rip-off of Asian culture, or a rip-off because it's based on Asian culture. I'm saying specifics about the imagery and discovery remind me a lot of Shenkuu. Like said, Shengui Guo feels very out-of-place compared to the rest of the Subeta lands. Heck, it's a very large island right near a lot of populated areas but...supposedly hadn't been known about in the slightest due to spirit stuff? I have no problem with Subeta having a Chinese themed land, but there's so many elements about the whole plot that don't make sense and such a difference between this land and all the other lands that it sticks out like a sore thumb, even more than it felt like Shenkuu did.
At least Shenkuu was undiscovered because it was on the other side of the world, rather than because, despite being very close to populated/mapped areas, it was...shrouded in spirit energy. That kept even people in aerial vessels from being curious about the area.
I was actually thinking somebody just really enjoyed Mists of Pandaria, mists being parted after a battle, turtle shaped island... In the end it doesn't really matter though, they're all inspired by the same source material.
You do realize that Subeta has an abundance of actual Asian users and that people can finds things attractive about a different culture without obsessing over and fetishizing it, right?
Why do you even care what people are dressing their HAs in?
The island is shaped like a turtle, which gives more of an indication of why it's never been seen before. Disappearing islands and islands existing on the backs of turtles, are a popular and really ancient theme, I would recommend reading more about them if you're curious.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ao_%28turtle%29 < is a start.
I did think of Shenkuu and even mentioned this to my friend, but the idea behind the plot and the land was great to me. Honestly I am excited about the possibilities of this new land.
I loled.
in b4 actual panda pets. That would be great
dude if they made it asian inspired do you know how many people would be calling racist right now probably
as if all the people bitching about the plot because they can't read a couple fucking sentences wasn't bad enough

I swear to god if they release a Bonju avatar I am so done (╯°□°)╯︵ â”»â”â”»

PROBABLY THE SAME PEOPLE THAT WILL CALL SUBETA OUT FOR BEING RACIST FOR USING REAL CHINESE. I am expecting this, dude. I totally am betting on it.
You know Subeta isn't going to win. You know it. I know it. It's inevitable. We're smart enough to know this.
