The rowboat one doesn't have mouse controls, I think? I can't go back to check, the plot literally won't let me.
For what it's worth - you don't need to bother with the enemies or the pickups in the rowboat game. Just focus on getting through.
I just saw it after you told me. The only thing I thought when I saw that game: Play play and who needs controls? Haha. Thankfully Im not the only one didn't see it.
I can see the misunderstanding here. I'm really dating myself (it's been YEARS since I played video games) but when I say joysticks I'm referring to the old style, which really was a stick that you pushed in different directions. The modern type with buttons would be just as hard for me as the arrow keys.

I'll never manage the Rowboat game because of my physical condition. This means the plot ends for me at Stage 2. Mouse games tend to be OK but arrow games like this defeat me no matter how hard I try.
I like the idea of letting us move on after we've had a certain number of attempts. After all, those of us with disabilities will be working very hard to do that certain number of attempts.
I personally feel like there should be multiple options for progressing through a plot, with the achievements just being "helped [x character] complete [x task]" and awarded to everyone who finished the step, regardless of how they did it. I don't like the idea that someone's getting left behind because they have arthritis and can't finish a game or because they can't solve a puzzle or because they don't have sufficient resources to do something (hypothetically). It's not a crazy idea to ask that the site lets all of its users participate in a site-wide event.
The boat game is frustrating the hell outta me! Not only is there a short limit of time, but the controls are wonky as hell, and once you get stuck, you don't have time to get freed! Also, as soon as your boat faces down, the controls get inverted, which annoys the tar outta me!
Also, I get EXTREMELY stressed when it comes to timed events (I tend to have panic attacks), and while I know that the Rowboat Race is one of those that you have to get to the pirate ship, it's very hard for me to concentrate when having to push keys to do so. In fact, I think I've messed up more times on that game than any of the others here, those that I play, that is. Also, I do have carpel tunnel (mainly because of where I worked the past five and a half years before it closed and moved somewhere else, that is) in my right wrist, so trying to do this game does hurt sometimes with it, but with the mouse, it eases it somewhat.
And I agree with what said about switching between keyboard and mouse controls as well. We know it'll be there on Pirate Panic, so why couldn't it be on Rowboat Race? An easy mode might be good or even increased time. That way, everyone gets a chance to be able to complete the game, advance the plot, and move on to the next game.
Just my two cents, but I'm like on my 25th time on the rowboat game and still no dice at getting through it.
[edit] And now the game has completely froze up for me. I guess it couldn't take me losing any more times.

I agree a lot with this. I don't think subeta should stop making games, but there should be alternative ways to complete a plot step for those who can't play games. Games are not required to be played in a normal day of enjoying subeta, so we have all types of people on site with varying degrees of ability, but here people are forced to the point of pain and tears if they just want to participate in a plot.
The rowboat game is really short and the pirate game has a toggle for arrow/mouse controls. I don't really see that there's anything more subeta can do other than maybe letting users opt out of a prize for passing a certain step if they absolutely cannot play a certain game. At least they wouldn't have to stop partway through the plot that way
[edit] I actually kind of like that idea. Give users an option to opt out of a game, but they lose any associated prizes and any general completion prizes as a result. But they could still move on and earn prizes for the next step
Amen to that! I'm already getting super-frustrated about this game as is, and if they aren't going to fix it, a lot of people aren't going to be able to participate any further in the plot.

Not to mention that an option to opt out of flash games would be a real boon to those whose devices or internet connections can't run them!
I understand your frustration and I agree multiple options might work for this kind of thing, but this IS a game. To complete a game you usually can't opt out of certain steps. You can't skip level 9 of a game to get to level 10. We have a lot of time to complete steps, people shouldn't just give up after the first day.
I have to admit I despaired of ever completing the rowboat challenge. I'm only 56 but I have pretty bad joint issues already.
Holding the up arrow down steadily with the finger of one hand, and tapping the left and right buttons only as needed with one finger of the other hand, while ignoring jewels, shells, sharks, and octopi finally got me through after about 50 tries.
I hate keyboard arrow games with a passion. I think the option to skip a seriously problematic step, with a consequent reduction in plot prize points, but the ability to complete the plot would be a good compromise.
I remember when the Sahermos plot was going on, I was stuck with Internet Explorer. Admin restrictions on the computer I was using prevented me from downloading chrome or Firefox. It was so crushing to not be able to complete the plot just because IE would jam up on one game. A skip option to pass on that achievement and prize, but continue the plot would have been wonderful.
I felt so bad for those users today, it's not their fault at all, they really tried their best to win the boat game, but for some of them it was impossible. It's not like they are lazy, finding excuses or want to get things in the easy way.. they simply can't.
There should be a way for them to pass every step and to get an achievement with the same prize too.
This is a game and it's not Subeta's fault that you have health issues. Unless there's a way to incorporate a different task that you would be able to do (or different controls that might be easier, like the pirate game had), you should have to either play the game or forfeit your prize. Not that I don't support finding alternatives, if possible.
I would gladly forfeit the achievement and prize, if any, for the rowing section if I could opt out of it and move on to the next step.

And then there are the ones who act like providing accommodations would lead to everything being taken down or deleted, instead of more people being able to participate!
I agree that more things should be mouse compatible but...no, subeta shouldn't just stop making games like this because some people don't like them or can't play them. -.- And if you don't actually DO what it is the achievement says, no you shouldn't get the same prize as everyone else. There are achievements I'll never be able to get, but am I complaining and demanding the same rewards as those who have gotten it? No. That's not how this stuff works.
How are users who don't have an actual keyboard supposed to complete plot steps like this? I tend to be here from either my phone or my tablet...neither of which have arrow keys or a mouse that would allow me to play either of the two new games (Gravedigger was difficult from my tablet, but still playable). Sadly, my arrow keys on my laptop are broken as well, so I guess I'm done with this plot now :( At least if there was a mouse option for the boat game I could continue.
I wouldn't say 'no more arrow games', but rather 'please give us the option to use either arrows or a mouse...or even better, an option that allows users on a tablet or phone to play too'.
