I've never tried knitting a blanket in one piece before - maybe the weight of the blanket pulled down on the strands as you were knitting it, and meant that your tension was affected, so the stitches weren't quite as even in places? Doing double strands on larger needles would be a load faster than dk yarn on 4mm needles or a 4mm hook like I tried though!

Maybe you could do blanket squares (even 30cm squares as then you'd not need many to make the blanket), but still use two strands, so it's slightly thicker than a single strand blanket, but knits up fast without the weight pulling against it?

You could always do irregular squares / random sizes, and just crochet a border between them & around the outside, so they line up reasonably evenly at the end?

I did think at one point about making some sampler squares, so using one fancy crochet or knitting stitch for a square, then making it up into a blanket eventually.... never got as far as starting it, but I had the idea sitting there laughs
