I agree with the whole sentiment about the pet lore feeling a lot like real-life informational bits about real world animals, and feeling the dissonance with that versus how I've come to view pets (mostly via the stories people come up with and spotlight winners).
Like, it seems like a lot of focus has always been on encouraging users to come up with characters and personalities and stories for pets, only to suddenly get this information that they're basically just like regular housepets or wild animals, and that only some of them (like koras) can communicate with people at all. I get that they're, y'know, pets and all, but it's still kind of disappointing. Pet-based NPCs have personality and can speak, for the most part, so I guess I was expecting more of the same with our pets.
Not that I don't appreciate all the effort that went into the articles; they were all very interesting to read. I'm so, SO glad that Subeta lore in general is finally getting attention, and I'm excited to see what else gets added in the future! All the suggestions made so far seem like really good ideas, and I'd love to see more details and images included in the future. The pages feel kind of empty as they are.
TINY BBY LAINS THO I LOVE HOW SMALL THEY ARE ; o;
I think a good idea would be to give a quick info guide to the left with basic info for each pet, like this: X

This could include as others have mentioned: Size(male to female variance?), plural vs. singular names, name of what a group of them is called, name of their babies, species origin, preferred food, etc.
That way you can get the basic run down of a species with a quick lookup.
I do agree with others on the pet vs character thing. I don't know how to solve that. Its always confused me how there are people, anthro version of pets, and talking quad versions lol
Maxx says: That was fun! Maxx says: Thanks, I was really hungry!
When feeding or playing with them, they talk. :p Besides, 4 of my pets are Subeta-based and two of them talk (the other two "don't" talk per-say: Skits has mutism and Haluk doesn't speak canidae).
The lore doesn't destroy anyone's interpretation of the canon. Just like irl, not all dogs conform to breed standard. My corgi doesn't nip at my heels, but a friend of mine has trouble with her corgi's heel-nipping behavior. xD

I thought about exactly that after I posted, which only confuses me more tbh. @ m@ It feels like the fact that our pets actually do talk to us when we feed and play with them (and read to them?? i can't remember) wasn't taken into account at all when the pages were made. Like how it's directly said that lains can't mimic voices, but if I interact with any of my lains, I get comments from them. In English. What?
Although I think the distinction between this and real dogs not conforming to breed standards is a little too... different for that comparison. If it were something like not all kumos are boundlessly loyal and not all donadak are cuddly by nature, that'd be different. But this is sentience and their ability to communicate, which goes a bit beyond things like breed standards and personality traits.
I guess ultimately it doesn't really matter, and I'm certainly not exactly unhappy with any of it, but it is a bit confusing!
I think, (and thus may be due to the lack of pet character experience) that the articles are fine in limiting to a pet level. I think teying to justify sending a pet into battle that is highly intelligent and capable of conversing with a human might be pretty difficult to explain/ationalize.
Stuff like sentience or anthromorphism should be left open to interpretation by each user. I think that allows for users that consider pets as also human companions and those that consider pets as pets.
The lack of formatting does irritate (along with issues mentioned) I would rather see a quick notes at the beginning like,
Name (Plural if not obvious) Pronunciation Average Weight Average Height Land Origin
for those who aren't looking to read an entire stoey
I was referring to things like weight or size of a Kumos or Lain. There can be high-end and low-end outliers, which skews the mean weight/size a bit, but overall, most beings are average or just normal.
I imagine my Kumos, Elfric, would probably be at a heavier weight than most Kumi, because he's trained as a battle pet.
As for communicating...I can see what you mean by that. What makes matters worse is that there are some NPCs that are actually pets themselves (the scratchcard guy is a Malticorn). Continuity errors are something to be expected in any fictional setting.
But again, it does not have to destroy your interpretation. Maybe as pets read more books, thus become more intelligent, and have jobs and everything else, along with social interaction with their humans, they too could learn to develop speech.
Human children, for example: they don't necessarily have a grasp of language in the first couple years of life, but darn it, they're determined to learn to speak!
Or maybe that SAI place has some weird device that grants your pet the ability to suddenly speak fluent English or Spanish. Or perhaps there is a universal language on Subeta that the pets can speak, but the human owners cannot...unless they learn it. ;)
I think that's the beauty of any pet site; players can create their characters freely and creatively, which don't have to 100% conform with site-canon. On Neo, I remember there was a user who'd submit their snow leopard-designed Kougra into the beauty contest thing, but they kept getting denied because "it does not represent the true appearance of a white Kougra".

TOTALLY agree.
Oh, I see! Sorry for misunderstanding; I totally agree with you there.
All those ideas actually sound really awesome, though. You make a lot of good points! I hope they give some kind of neat explanation like that later on down the line once they flesh out the Subetapedia some more. I'd love for there to be some kind of story or reasoning behind all that.
I always imagined the Tutani as roughly dolphin-sized.
Mortiking would definitely be the biggest, though, and then probably the Rreign or Dilemma. :P

We've updated the articles to include the common pet image along with the size comparison!
(btw we are reading this forum and others that pop up, it's nice to see all the feedback)
I'm pleased that this area is getting attention. I just wish it didn't feel like its half assed/rushed attention.
Also, why does nearly every sentence need to end with a "!"? Is it really THAT exciting?
Would these be accepted in pet spotlight? Or is this another case of Subeta not following the guidelines/rules they laid out for their users....yet again.

I'm also a little disappointed that the pets here just seem to be glorified versions of Earth animals so far. I'm one of the people who thought they were intelligent, sentient beings. Especially since they read books, use weapons in the coliseum, and talk when we feed them. Oh well, I had no intention of applying subeta lore to any of my characters anyway. Something like this is still good for people who don't do their own world building and would rather work off of subeta's universe.
- what do you mean, would they be accepted in pet spotlight? They're encyclopedia entries, basic information on sizing and a little history of the pet. They're not characters, they're species in general - and we specifically intended not to weave any kind of involved 'story' here, as that's for the users to do. Pet spotlight is a completely different thing.
These articles are really starting points for your Subeta journey. There are many things within in world of Subeta that could affect your pet, and cause it to deviate from the article (from simple physical things such as training, to the experimentation in the Darkside, to the magics of Saherimos). Now there is something to deviate /from/ which I think is pretty exciting.
As to communication - it was the fact that we call them 'pets' that led us to the decision to ultimately keep their basic sentience non-speaking for the most part. I think this is something I'd like to look further into, along with the reason there are anthropomorphic NPCs over the site. (The idea of having a 'pet' vs. a 'companion' - at what point does the line change?) We have some ideas, behind the scene, which I'm sure will be making it onsite eventually. But for now, again, something to deviate from in your own stories!
- I love that idea of the breakdown on the left! It's not possible for me to edit that in right now, but I'll likely be sitting down with Keith/Amber over the next week and making a few little changes to the 'pedia based on feedback :)
As to why only 10 articles went out, instead of waiting for everything to be complete first: well, for one, because it's the 10th anniversary! 10 was a good round number to start with, and we've been working on these particular articles for a while. Subeta has tried in the past to bring projects like this to completion (that is, have EVERY pet done) before release, and we've come across a multitude of problems (losing staff members, other priorities taking over which slowed the project down, writing styles changing, etc.) Not to mention, adding in that many articles at once would have been a large task! And much more difficult to change had their been immediate unhappy feedback. It's much simpler for us to add to the Subetapedia now, and by starting with only a limited amount of articles we can work in feedback for future ones. (Like the sidebar information) It's /there/ now, and a thing I am excited to really build on now that we can.
So many things to write about :D
Yes, I mean the writing with the errors and constant !. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
Shut up & Lets Play! Youtube Channel
- oh, well yes. Exclamation marks aren't errors, they're just personal preference, and we wouldn't deny for them. The one error I've seen pointed out would not stop a pet from getting into the spotlight, as we can generally see that it's a small error that is easily corrected and doesn't really hurt the story for us. If a spotlight entry was nothing BUT spelling mistakes and grammatical errors and they completely took away from the story, then yes we'd likely deny :)
Ok then. But as you pointed out its an encylopedia. My parents used to punish me by making me copy pages and I don't think I ever came across a single "!" and they are just all over the place. Its a good start, I'm glad its having attention paid to it. But it feels rushed & could do with some editing to make it all more cohesive.
Shut up & Lets Play! Youtube Channel
- we don't see ourselves quite in the same vein (or league!) as published encyclopaedias, which I imagine are worked on and edited by a great number of people! We're developing our own style, and adapting as we go, as we see fit, and as user feedback comes in :) We were pretty excited when writing these articles, and that has apparently manifested in more exclamation points than usual!
(Although for real here, you want our encyclopaedia to resemble the punishment you got as a kid?! I hope you are at least now bursting with facts after that!)
I&;d love to see a compiled list of entries which detail Subeta&;s past plots and major site events. ;) This way, new players can jump right into discussions, and know who Amy was or how Steamwork pets came into existence, without feeling left out.
Oh goodness yes please I'd really like this. It's great having an event section but it doesn't really tell us much about some things LIKE THE SAI
