I'm not gonna lie, I've honestly never seen a news story about Australia on television here in California, but that doesn't mean I ignore the entire country's existence. haha.
I don't see how someone could just write off a whole nation as basically irrelevant because they "do us no harm." What.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? ^^^^^ HOW COULD YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT AUSTRALIA.
people should watch more cartoons.
I like being Canadian :P But I have to ask, is Australia really considered to be an Island? xD I know technically, it matches the definition of an Island. But it's very large. And it's a continent. And technically North American and South America and every other continent would also be considered islands if you consider Australia one. o__o
[edit]
By the way, I read news about Australia :D Though the only time we ever hear Australian stories on our local news is when you have freaky weather.
It's like, omg they let these people near animals D: D: D:

Contributing nothing to your discussion, but look at the bunny!
ROFL wow, way to insult two countries at once! xD she managed to first basically declare Australia to be non-existent, and then that the entire country of America and all of its people are too stupid to recognize the big floaty island thing somewhere over there...I think it's south? Down under? Down under where? ;D
Echoing though, I think a lot of us Americans - while quite aware that there IS an Australia, and even able to point it out on a map (probably) - don't know THAT much about it. You've got all the stereotypical "G'day mate, care for a shrimp on the barbie?", kangaroo/koala/dingo, beaches and open spaces and heat and Sydney (not to mention P. Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney!), and maybe even things like Aborigines and didgeridoos, but after that, I think it starts getting blurry for people here. :P I don't think a lot of people here could name the capital - they'd definitely guess Sydney first, Melbourne next, and I think if they made it all the way down to Canberra that would be pretty impressive.
I do get where your friend is coming from; we are a big country with 50 states and dealings all over the world, blah blah blah; but still. It's not nearly as bad as she paints it. :P
[edit]
Obviously, this is what I mean by didgeridoo:

;)
LMFAO. I wish I could ferry myself over there. It might take a long time though. My head hurts.
... that's really creepy...
do you mean koalamydia!? /one direction
i lol'ed ❤
it makes me so happy to see you here. i don't want you to be in usa either cause i want you here. xoxoxoxox
ahh the old igloos! i think it is fair enough to say that some people will be more ignorant than others about australia but it is just so so silly to say your view and then justify it by saying an entire nation thinks that too so it's ok
where do you work now? :) haha i don't work at full bars though b/c i don't have any experience so they won't put me on so i don't get any experience and it's a neverending cycle.......... i'm just put on the tiny bars where all we do is poor beer into a cup hur dur.
haha where did you find that gif of me?
that's funny b/c apparently she doesn't even know the stereotype of australia. "I never even knew what an aborigine was before i met you" 8|

did you just get all 1d on me DID YOU
i laughed so much when i read about 1d and chlamydia. THAT'S WHY YOU DON'T PICK UP KOLAZ BITCHES
[tot=joanne]
- Pfft don't lie. Australia can't exist because you all would all have nosebleeds and fall off the earth because you know people can't walk upside down and stuff. Don't lie.
collecting Australia? Isn't that the place that has giant spiders with health bars floating above their bodies?
Besides that, Australia is awesome. You guys have cute accents, kangaroos, mini kangaroos (wallabies), and koalas.
I don't think I've seen you around in a while, Joanne.
While it is true that a lot of Americans are culturally ignorant and lack geography skills, many of them actually have heard of Australia. Many people usually think of stuff like the outback, kangaroos, or opera though. While many know of its existence, I think most people think of Australia through stereotyping and pop culture. It is just as much unfair to stereotype America as it is to stereotype Australia IMO.

Australia makes the news (along with pretty much every other country we aren't fighting), like Shantal said, when there's a storm or a quake or something. I don't know why we find the weather to be so uniquely interest-piquing. Maybe because it doesn't require prior knowledge of the political climate or ethnography of a state, since Americans in general know neither of those things about any country that we aren't fighting haha. We all recognize the existence of the rest of the world, we all talk to the rest of the world on WoW haha and when we meet Aussies we love them! We just don't hear about much on the news.
That person sounds like a complete idiot, to be honest. :| The type of idiot that then justifies her idiocy by saying everyone else around her is also an idiot. Oi.
I never watch the news or read news stories about the USA, therefore it doesn't exist! (Except I live here...but really, our news is SO depressing, it's just not worth watching.)
(Would I be a terrible person if I said I love Australia for giving us Crocodile Dundee? Because I freaking love Crocodile Dundee, which is actually how I first learned about Australia when I was like...born. :D! )
i'll try to be here more often then ♥ brb moving to australia with twinbb!!! i miss youu ;n;
Growing up people always told me that Australia was full of rude/mean people because the country started out as a bunch of criminals put on an island lmao
But these are the same people who think Canadians ride moose and drink maple syrup so
I basically thought the exact same thing as you. While we aren't on American news often we are at LEAST mentioned during huge disasters. To say we don't appear in American news /at all/ is ridiculous. I know the Mosman bomb hoax was on the Times last year because I saw it online. And she can't exactly say Australian stuff isn't in the news because she doesn't even watch the news. How can you possible know something is not on the news if you don't watch it to know what is or isn't on!? I'm rambling.
is it safe to say you live in your mind and not america? it's bad but i've never watched crocodile dundee. i'm horrible. don't hurt me ok.
i really wish you did. just don't get lost trying to find us ok ❤

lol wut I feel like people in america care a lot more about australia than say cambodia because they're a first-world country with cool animals and they speak English and there are some cool movies featuring kangaroos and stuff! In reality I don't think many people give that much thought to countries other than the ones they live in, and the ones they give thought to are the ones that are culturally/ethnically/economically similar to theirs so it requires less effort to watch their tv shows and such. Which definitely isn't a good thing, but if we're talking about countries Americans are ignorant of, Australia is not on that list even if it is to this particular person.
Haha, oh, I do totally live in my mind, but I also live in America as well. Smack in the middle of it, actually. But that girl sounds like the kind of American I really can't stand though. Like someone else said, it's people like her that cause the stereotypes about us and give us a bad name. We certainly aren't ALL like she is.
Also, you SHOULD see it, because it's great. Or at least, I think it's great, but since I'm known for liking bad movies, that might not be a good endorsement. :P
i don't think they understand. they see cute things and must pick them up.
