I was talking to someone from America and she basically told me all Americans don't acknowledge the existence of Australia and that we're just tolerated because "we don't do any harm." So I want to ask you, do you think we are just some shitty country and don't give a crap about us because we're so tiny and redundant? She goes on about saying how it's not common sense that Australia is a multicultural society. I would assume that it is common knowledge because people will migrate, study abroad, etc. There isn't some law saying that [this race] is banned from living in Australia so isn't it blatantly obvious that it is multicultural!?

try having people being confused about new zealand :P my friend's workmate thought it was (another) state she didnt know about, most people think you can ferry from sydney to new zealand etc.etc.

but to some degree americans dont really care about other countries... like pretty much 80% of americans i talk to can't grasp the concept that the southern hemisphere just has opposite seasons...

I'm an american that moved to New Zealand, mind if I comment? ^_^; My views living in america have changed since moving here to NZ, however. I didn't know all that much about Australia, other than my dad travels there for business several times a year, and it can be quite hot. I also know you're where all the koalas and kangergoos (and stuffed koala dolls made from kangergoo fur) come from. Oh! And Taz, from Looney Tunes!

Overall, I think from being in the states.. Australia doesn't made prime-time news slots too often, so its not daily on people's minds?

While unfortunately it is true that there is a lot of international ignorance, it's getting a lot better! It really depends a lot on what demographic you're talking with :) When I was in high school, I had to tutor a group of people -- they thought Spain was in South America. But it wasn't a country. I don't even. Brazil is in Europe too btw. It doesn't help that in an old unit we had long, long ago we learned about how they live in houses in Canada and drive cars! 🌈
