Well, I thought is was something I could find on subeta and NOT via google, suspected a mime file. You can ask for details of the OSI model for all I care but I'm not bothering with trivias anymore if I don't know if they are exclusively subeta related or not.

I want a lion as a pet. That would be very cool. I would need a shovel and a huge liter box though :/ on topic: I like the new trivia prize very much and it sounds like we are going to be getting a visit from some not so friendly critters.

Im sorry but I dont think it really matters what pet you have or where you live or what grade you went up to all i know is I am over 40 and I have never heard of using a decoder or even googling for one.I do know about computers and math and yet it didnt help.....Yep i agree the prize should be reused.

If I knew it was a non-subeta related one, and if I knew we needed a decoder to figure it out, I would have looked it up on google.
I was in the impression it was a subeta related one, so I searched the site.

Alot of people use the net but don't know a thing about coding, so saying it was easy because you knew exactly what to look up is daft.
That trivia excluding a large amount of users because they simply had no idea what they were looking for.
I have never heard of Base64 as haven't many of my friends. These trivias are supposed to be fair to everyone, not just those who know about a certain subject.
Anyway! I think i got the new one

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

For all the people complaining - I got it right with no prior knowledge of base64. Just googled "decoder" and kept looking till I found it. And I live in Africa - where we have lions as pets. If a third-world country girl can get it, you have no excuse to complain.

If you have completed Mathematics or Computer Studies on anything above like Grade 10 level, you must have at least heard of binary, hexadecimal and octal? Or at least seen it on your calculator? Those are base 2, 6 and 8. So looking up base converters isn't a completely unreachable conclusion.

It is the internet and it is simple trivia. How can anyone NOT have even heard of Base64? It is the whole NET at your fingertips, whine less and think more. How hard it is to search for VBgejk2GG (or alike) + decoder? It takes you to base 64, hexadecimal and whatever you want. If you think you should decode the code...and if it quacks, it must be a ducking decoding thing, no?!

Augh. I knew it was coded, I just couldn't figure out in WHAT! Turns out I actually found a really cool Colonial era cypher, in addition to a variant of Base64 that's called something else entirely ....

Well, congrats to Keith (and my Dad) for being uber-smart computer programming/coding nerds.

But I promise I'll beat either of them in a Philisophical debate. So !! (XD)

I had a sneaky hunch it was programming related. After all, the Head Honcho is the Uber Programmer of this site. But, as the saying goes, "mah horse just don't go that way", so I gave it a pass. Final thought: There's a lot to be said for a "level playing field" cause gosh darn it Keith we're not all card-carrying MENSA members. So give us poor puzzle peons a break and keep it onsite. I think a lot of the complaints could have been avoided if the tag (format: English) would have been added. It doesn't give away much of anything and clarifies the whole of it. Oh well. Hindsight is 20/20.

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

I don't think it was right the way you posted the trivia question. No, I'm not whining about omg it was too hard so unfair I don't get the item. The point is that yes, you're really good at coding. We get it. Really. Not everyone is, in fact, not a lot of people are. what you're missing is the fact that most the complaining(at least that I could see) wasn't "omg I missed an item" it was more "Now, how would we have ever thought to do that? I couldn't understand any of it!" I'd be willing to bet that not a lot of people even knew what base64 was before now.

People expect the trivia to make them think. If you ask me, they were a little easy when I first joined here. However, this one? 2500 people entered and only 350 got it? Doesn't that say soemthing? Not to count the people(like me) who just didn't even enter anything. I'm not saying we should make it way too easy for everyone, but you can't take for granted because soemthing is trivial to you it is even KNOWN to everyone else.

And yeah, there's also the "other language" complaint. Because really, it is a coding language and I do see their point. HOWEVER, it's over and done with and I'mma go guess on the new trivia.

So do me a favor and don't ban me cause I'm an outspoken little chika (Who also rambles in odd directions >.>)

"I don't understand how you expect to be my equal on my site. That's like wanting to be an equal to the president, while in the USA. I make the rules, I'm allowed to bend them. Get over it."

That's a really terrible metaphor since actually the president of the USA is supposed to be equal to everyone else and is not above the law. The idea of everyone being equal is actually the entire idea this country was founded on- that's why we have a president and not a king.

Anyways, I didn't get the trivia, but I didn't think it was unfair. I looked at the string of letters and didn't get it so I didn't really try. But if it HAD occurred to me that it was a programming language, I could have easily figured it out. I don't understand how anyone can be on the internet and not have heard of a decoder for programming languages.

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

I submitted an answer I think makes sense, but I'm not confident in it.

Anyway, as to the last one, I'd bet a lot of the people upset over it are those who still need trivias to get into the Blue Building. I got it but I know when I first took a crack at it I was thinking, "Great, new trivias finally start coming out and this could be the second one in a row I don't get. Stupid building should just be torn down."

Also, some (not all) of the people complaining might not be as mad as they sound and may just be letting off steam.

Blue Building here I come, ever so slowly...

I am so happy that I am not the only one on Subeta who refuses to be a sheep in the herd. JustMimi posted the Editorial question and answer...the same one that has been floating in my head ever since that ridiculous past trivia.

Making and breaking your rules is great. What is the use of making them though if you are just going to break them? People lose respect for these so-called "rule makers and breakers". Like that judge who was the head of some committee for regulating ridiculous lawsuits and then sues the drycleaners for like 150 million $$. You think he is respected anymore? LOL

I will prolly get frozen for pointing this out. Oh well!

Well, now I get why people were saying there are gonna be a lot of "Unfair!" complaints once the trivia is over. I didn't get it, I have never heard of base 64 in my life and I have no idea how I would've gotten to it, even if I tried to google just "decoder". But it's just one trivia, one prize.. it really isn't a big deal.

Id like to point out that A) the trivia WAS still Subeta- related once you figured out the question.
and B) LOTS of people had posted that it looked like a code, and wondered where to decode it.. so its not as if that idea wasnt plastered all over for people to see.

Keith said:
While we're on the subject of equality, there are users who are under 10. So we should slim down the trivia's even further with easy questions [but keep the rare prizes, of course!] and keep the questions that be answered with under 10 minutes of work [Because, kids have to study for school and can't spend so much time on the internet.]
end quote

By no means, Keith. However, if one makes a statement, such as the one in the issue 14 editorial, it is not unreasonable to suppose that when one does not abide by one's statement, that there will be a hue and cry. Yes, as you said to Flit, you have the right to do whatever you like on your own site - make rules, bend them, shatter them, whatever you'd like. Since, however, the expectations of your users is that the rules will be equally applied, (just as the President is no more allowed to traffic in controlled substances than any other citizen) it is rather counter-intuitive to think they will not complain, and will simply say, "oh, right, Keith can do anything" without questioning it.

I think I'll just bypass the trivias which appear to be extremely arcane -- though that would be easier if I didn't enjoy learning new things so much. Would it be possible to include the explanation for the answer and if needed, the method of solving the puzzle, along with the answer in the past trivias section?

Thanks.
