I feel the hair tuff is too tuffty rather than just being the bit scraped up to reveal its brain, also the lower legs are too pale.
The new one is nice, but lacks the charm of the old one. Voting old!
All my pets are Darkonites. The new look is.. trying too hard to look sexy? So wrong. And no whiskers! OLD SCHOOL ALL THE WAY!
I like the new version better but the only thing I dont like is that the eyes seem to get lost.. if the eyes were as bright as the old style then it would be perfect!
In lou of most opinions, I agree, I'm not fond of this update. I miss the scowl, and the pose is a bit stoic and unnatural. The pupils aren't very defined, and the hair tuft, while attractive, does hide the brain details a bit redundantly. And more minorly, I felt the crooked whiskers really gave the old Darkonite character.
The art is definitely impressive, and I love that this pet is getting attention, but I prefer the details and style of the old one.
i'm all for keeping closer to the proportions of the old darkonite. i love the way his head is big and adorable compared to the rest of his body, while still having a grumpy expression. the new art is nice and high quality, but i'm hoping there will be a way to keep his proportions the same while giving the style an update at the same time!

I really don't know where to begin = since this is my favorite pet on the site. Everything about the new one seems off. The eyes (pupil wise) need to be bigger. the red doesn't stand out on it very well. The nose, I don't know it really just doesn't look right. The bit of hair that sticks out seems very out of place, probably the way it was drawn. I think a bit more of the brain should be showing.
The darkonite doesn't look evil or menacing. He overall seems way to friendly. Like he's on happy pills. The claws around the neck should be longer. On the revamp it reminds me kind of a collar. The new one looks to dog-like when in reality it's suppose to be a cat (if im correct) The spikes (when looking at) on the right seem to far back and seem to me, they should be bigger and a bit more better to see.
For the helm, something doesn't seem right. But really cant put my finger on it. The body itself I cant seem to find something I don't like. There are no whiskers on the new one, and Id like to see them on the re-vamp since it lets you know better it's a cat. I love the tail and the coloring seems very good
the old one is better. it's cuter and looks like bit a cat, the new one more like a dog. I like cats.
I like the new one, but there is something missing. The older version has more impressive claws (wrapped around its body I mean) and an evil look on its face. I prefer the old version, sorry guys :/
I like the new one, but i agree with everyone about the face, he needs to me more "evil" looking. ^_^' Also, to me, on the old one, it looks like his chest is concave, and i like how the pointy bits were protruding over the chest a bit.

This is the first time I have ever thought old pet art looks better than the new art. The head is just off to me. The new one doesn't have the same attitude as the old one - the cocked head, the glare looking right at you like it's challenging you, and I like the skinnier sharper looking ear things and the bigger facial spikes, which are almost lost in the new version. I do like the coloring, shading, and hind legs on the new one (not crazy about the smaller front paws, they look like cat feet, and the original Darkonite looks much more firmly planted on the ground), although I like the sturdier look of the old one. So, there's my $.02 on it :)
I say no to a smiling Darkonite. >8(

The colouring on the newer version is fantastic, but I'm not a great fan of the head - not because it isn't nicely done, but rather because something seems to have got lost in translation. The glare on the older one, for example - it looks grumpy, annoyed. Which, you know, since it has a slice of its brain poking out, you can totally understand. I always associated darkonites with that particular expression. Maybe if it was a bit larger (though perhaps not as big as the head on the old version), and a bit more standoffish as opposed to cheeky/mischievous -- though that's totally just my opinion! c:

OK, I rarely EVER notice things like this, I'm no artist, lol. But for some reason that back leg looks a bit wonky to me. A great improvement tho and voted for the new one.
This revamp actually makes me like darkonite. For a long time I just got it in the zapper and was like 'uggh again? that ugly thing?' The smile makes it seem cheeky, and the style is much more with the new art on subeta. Yes there are a few flaws, but I think even with those...well the old one had many many more flaws xD;
I like it but i think the smile should be more diabolical...or maybe a toothy evil grin,the rest i like^_^
I really prefer the old one, the pose makes it look like an action figure, it looks so stiff, and.. Squishy. I couldn't see the neck, which makes it a whole lot weirder, and the smile totally removes the cunning-ish personality of the Darkonite.

I agree that it's time for a re-vamp but there are too many things that irk me about the re-draw.
I do not like the smile. I think the upper most comment re-draw for the body looks about perfect. Mostly i think the shading on the tips of the legs could be darker. Those eyes, the glare placement drives me crazy. & The pupils? are way too small. & I agree that the helmet needs to end above the nose. & Of-course whiskers would hold true to the original style.
With some fine editing I'd yes this re-vamp.
I vastly prefer the new one, but I've never been a fan of the old darkonite (except for the angelic). This update gives it a much cuter, more mischievous appearance, and if it looks like this, I might actually get one. I adore the more dog-like anatomy, and if that's what the artist was going for, kudos for making the back legs longer than the front legs. Am I the only one who LIKES its grin?!
The smile on the new one really doesn't look right.. I also agree with the sonic thing that has been mentioned and I think the solution is to change the downwards point bit of the helmet so that it doesn't go the full length down to the nose. I also really used to like the black splatter things around the bottom of the legs, so I'm sad to see those not included on the newer version :(
I love Darkonites, and the common art really did need a revamp. The new body is fantastic and I would only suggest minor changes such as those Cylum suggested. If it were to remain as it is drawn currently, I would have no complaints.
The head however, I have some issues with. While it is still really well done, I agree with some of the people who have said that it looks like a Sonic character. To be honest, that was my first thought when I looked at it and wondered why I didn't completely love the design. I think it is because the skull "helmet" reaches down to the nose and because of how the smile is on the side of the mouth, wide, and nearly reaches the eye.
In my opinion, I believe the Darkonite should not be smiling because the species is considered "cursed" in a way. The smile gives it a "I'm evil and happy to be here" kind of vibe instead of the old "Being cursed sucks and I might be emo" kind of vibe. I think it changes the pet too much. If the only change made to the drawing was to remove the smile and replace it with a frown, I would be content with the outcome.
But I would be far more satisfied if the "helmet" didn't reach quite so far down, the whiskers were re-added, and the "whites" of the eyes a much darker grey/almost black.
All in all, I love Cylum's suggestions.
I'm voting new because the old Darkonite was pretty desperate for an update, but I would much prefer if it was frowning in the end.
Nice! For once, I don't have any major issues with a particular revamp! Just little edits this time. I'd say is fix the line where the protrusion-things and the head connect. The head crease-line isn't supposed to be on the closer one, if you know about perspective. Also the rest of the line makes the head look flat because it's so dark and there are no breaks. Also I'd listen to what everyone else is saying about the face. That's the most important part! I like the new differentiation between front and back legs of hoof/paw, it looks more interesting now. (:

That said I like the slightly leaner look and the shading and details are obviously superior, I like some of the bone details and the new tail spades are a great improvement, they feel much less cartoony and more natural. It's obvious the Darkonite could use an update but perhaps a slightly more polished one.
oh and I think the darkonite looked nice before because of the color contrast. I believe the contrast helps add that devilish effect /justwhatithink /shot
The new one doesn't have the whiskers or eyes of the old and it misses something. While the art is good, I think the old one is still better. Sorry.
Although the body of the new Darkonite is sleak and nice, it doesn't seem to contain the tempered expression of the old one. When I think of Darkonites I think of cold, intellectual, sinister cat-demon things -- not so much just happy, mischivous tabbies (lack of a better description). I also think that the lack of fur/whiskers make it seem more amphibian (maybe that's just me).

I like the new one better as a whole (love the legs/paws, spikes, brown bone(?) plates, and coloring), but there are a few things I don't like so much about it.
First, I like the thinner tails on the old one. I can't really pinpoint why. I just think it looks cooler.
More importantly, I'm not too crazy about the face on the new one. Part of this is due to the overall shape, which is a bit more pointed... but I think a lot of it has to do with the expression. If the smile was changed to something else (like, say, the expression in Cylum's example) I think it would help keep the personality of the old one. (For the record, I also like the fact that Cylum's example included the scar and the whiskers that were on the old Darkonite art.)

hmm... i quite like the body of the old one.. but the face is much more important to me and that looks of to me, its too round, too crazy.. he looks like he is retarded or something... if you glue the old face to the new body more or less, that would be perfect..
I like it but, I think the face could probably use some tweaks. He looks kinda Sonic the Hedgehog-esque to me. But the rest of the body is really good, I really like the tails and the feet and just the updated look but, I don't really like his face.
I agree with a lot of the comments regarding changes. Zaf's mockup is more like what I would like to see in the revamp: A smaller, more cat-like nose (I guess I'm partial to my Angelic Darkonite); larger or at least more well-defined eyes; slightly wider, stockier front legs to match the rear ones; darker markings.
I never knew I was so picky. XD But I think the current Darkonite art is adorable, so....

Nix the smile, add some grunge, add some more contrast (paws and eyes specifically). It has potential, but it's not quite there yet.
I have to say that what threw me off the most was the smile, and how... stocky the front legs seem. Even though the art is improved, the pose/anatomy is incredibly stiff.
I definitely prefer the old. It looks so much better. The new one's head is too small, the smile doesn't suit it, the muzzle looks too round, I can't see the irises well, the legs are a bit fat... overall, the old one just looks better. The new one doesn't seem right; it looks too happy. Last time I checked, the Darkonite is not a cute or happy pet.

I've probably re-read comments on this about 3 times now, and I'm glad the whiskers were just accidentally forgotten.. that's a relief X3 cuz they are awesome.
but I do like 's little tweaks to the art.
It's not that I don't like the quality of the artwork of the new one, because that is by far better than the old.. it's just that the whole dark demeanor is missing.. but I'm glad that will be fixing things.. because I agree the Darkonite needs love.
I too prefer the old one. For me there is something about the head that I'm not fond of, perhaps I'm just used to the old version's much larger head. D: I love the old one's large eyes. D:
To me the old one just has more personality and character.
I really can't say there is anything I like about the new one besides the quality of the lineart and coloring. Don't get me wrong, the artist did a good job but this is not what I would imagine to replace an already kickbutt look. The darkonite has always been one of my favorite pets on this site and if this gets put through I'm going to so sad :(
Now onto the actual constructive criticism. The entire thing looks .. plump? Although the head is much smaller it soomehow looks fatter at the same time and the muzzle is SO weird looking. It's been cartoonized way to much, I like the original because it looks hard and creepy, the new one looks like it's something cute trying to be creepy and it doesn't work at all. The legs need to be thinned considerably, they look like they have fat rolls. I hate that it's smiling, I like that he looks grumpy. I like the old eyes better... D8 Um. .. it needs fixing. I think I COULD like the new one if considerable changes are made and the artist can bring back the appropriate evil feeling.
I don't mean to be rude, I really just don't want to see one of my favorite pet designs changed to something that has a completely different feel about it :(
