I'm looking forward to planning or going on my honeymoon this year. My husband and I haven't left the country since the pandemic began, so it will be such a treat to travel to another country rather than to another state.

I'm looking forward to re-starting therapy sessions. I think it will really help my mental well-being.

I'm also looking forward to a special trip next week with my daughter. <3

Yay For Week 2! Winner of week 1 was !!!!!

January Week 2

Week 2 Prize:

Week 2 Contest: Favorite Magical/Mythical Creature Tuesday 1/10 to Monday 1/16

I love fantasy. High fantasy at that. This week I would like for you guys to let me know what your favorite magical or mythical creature is, post a picture for us to see, and tell us why you love it. It can be from a mythos like the mighty dragons or from a pop culture reference Like Flakor from the movie The Neverending Story. Maybe from a book or comic? Yea Nerd time!

My Example:

Yea I could go on and on on this one. So I will limit myself to 2! Turtle Ducks (Avatar the last Airbender - tv anime) ATLA is one of my favorite shows of all time. There is a lot I love about it but I for sure love the mixing of animals. Again as an ancient history buff this is actually pretty accurate thinking for the time this was supposed to be set. I love Appa and Momo but they are well known through the series so these guys are my next favorite! So Cute!

Turtle Ducks!

Sphinx (Egypt & Greek Mythos) What started my love of ancient history? Bingo! Learning about Ancient Egypt in primary school. I can go on and on but I will say that the Sphinx was my favorite part as a child. Most people know of "The" Sphinx that guards pyramids, but the Greek fell in love with the mythos and adopted it as well. Most Egyptian Sphinx will be male while most Greecian Sphinx will be female. I loved that they were the "cats" of dragon hoarding lol. They guarded treasure with their puzzles and loved to interact with humans because to them we were so fascinating! I'm going to stop there while I still have my dignity and show you them now...

My all-time fav magical creature is the dragon but not the fierce ones yet the Dragons of Pern, a book series where humankind and sentient dragons work together to defeat danger, communicating through telepathy. My most loved of them is Ruth, a white dragon, who is totally laid-back, loveably and intelligent even when sometimes a bit naive which seems to be very wise in the end.

My fav mythical creature is the Phoenix. It is a symbol of resurrection, who wouldn’t like that for themself. Also, it can fly, you would never have to trust public transport again ! XD

Have a great day, you all!

My favorite mythological creature are fairies! I love the idea of a creature that is beautiful but evil or horrendous but good. Although the word 'fairy' is not that old, being from the Middle ages, the creature by another name has been in myth and legend in cultures all over the world since Ancient times. I'll read just about anything with fairies, elves, and their ilk... LOL Impossibly, 'Tooth Fairy' is hilarious. A good movie.

There is no question in my mind. Not only are Tolkien's elves my favorite, but I relate to them far more than I relate to humans. I simply did not know until I read Tolkien's works.

I could pick a lot of different mythological creatures. It was one of my subjects I read all the books about in my little library as a elementary school student. Our library was small, so it was probably a shelf or two, to be honest. But I'm going to go with...

Cerberus

Depiction courtesy of the game Hades. I often gravitate towards the dog or cat creatures, and Cerberus has long been one of my favorites. Something about the loyalty, strength, and fire first drew me to the dogo. While I'm an earth element at my core, there's some about fire that always draws me in. I always wanted a terrifying, magical dog as a pet. Now I just have cats, but yeah. lol. I love Hades depiction of him as a big, scary, yet adorable giant dog because that's how I imagine him.

Honorable mentions to hellhounds, manticores, and wingless griffins

My favorite magical/mythical creatures are:

Nymphs and Gnomes. I'm a firm believer that gnomes but in the latino sense: duendes, are real. I had an experience where I had lost my passport and needed it to travel. I offered the gnomes something and in the next 10 minutes it was right where I had looked.

Apart from that I love nymphs so much. I think there is something so whimsical about them. I always think of them when I'm out and about in nature. I wonder if they are ever peeking over to see what I'm up to or if they leave me little messages.

It's hard to choose but I'm gonna say... Kappa! They're traditionally kinda creepy and scary but over the years have become cute ^^ Here's one from the film Summer Days with Coo And here's a mascot design by Sanrio, Kappa no Kappy

And as a bonus I'd like to mention amabie! Another Japanese yokai, one known for warding off illness if you create images in its likeness. Here's one I particularly love, made by the artist Arisa Adams c: ❤️

I have always loved centaurs and centaurettes. The very first time I saw them was in Disney's "Fantasia" when I was very little. I just thought they were so magical and beautiful, and I adored horses. I wanted to know how I could become a centaurette. I appreciated that the centaurs were a part of the "Harry Potter" universe as well.

Turtle ducks, Omg they look so cute! XD

My favorite would definitely be dragons! I have always had a fascination with them, they are beautiful, mighty, intelligent creatures(depending on what you're reading I think) usually they are fire-breathing, and most can fly!

The Dragon and the Phoenix in Chinese mythology https://thecrabbynook.com/pages/what-does-the-dragon-and-phoenix-symbolize-in-feng-shui Their symbolism is very wholesome, plus they look super cool!

Daltokki 달토끼 (moon rabbit) was adopted into Korean folklore from Chinese myths. According to legend, the rabbit was found by looking at the moon’s craters. Today it is an important symbol of Chuseok (autumnal equinox harvest festival), and the rabbit pounds its pestle to make rice cakes in a mortar. I think they’re cute, making food for the holiday!

Jackalope Jackalope A 'species' of cryptid found in the (wild) western US, mostly Wyoming and South Dakota they look like a jack rabbit with the antlers of a deer. Known for it's fearsome demeanor, it's recommended that should you go seeking them out you should wear stove pipes on your legs because they seldom run but instead choose to fight attacking with their fearsome and sharp antlers. Known to have the ability to mimic human speech mostly to sit just outside the glow of the campfire and echo back your own singing in the night. While catching a jackalope alive is next to impossible, their milk is said to have extensive healing properties. If you want to improve your odds of catching one alive it is said that your best bet is to tempt them in with their favorite drink, whiskey.

Now that you've heard the tall tale of the jackalope, here's the history. They are and always have been a bit of novelty taxidermy and a tourist attraction. In the 1930's the Herrick brothers made the first jackalope mount combining a jack rabbit with the antlers from a deer. They then sold this mount to a Roy Ball an owner of a hotel. On display in the hotel it became something of a tourist attraction and the legend/tall tale began to grow and spread. Many people wanted their own jackalope mount to bring home with them and the Herrick's found they had a new business. Wyoming and South Dakota still use jackalopes as a tourist attraction and many tourist traps gift shops still sell mounted 'jackalopes' and other jackalope themed souvenirs.

The reason the jackalope is one of my favorite mythical creatures is because it adds just a little bit of magic to the world. When I was younger my family used to take an annual road trip out to South Dakota and I loved that there were these supernatural critters being sold all over the place, trinkets, postcards, toys, t-shirts and yes still mounted ones. I would almost always pick jackalope themed postcards to send to my friends back home. And when I got home more than once more than one friend asked me about them and if they were real. It is an unparalleled feeling having someone ask you that, like you have the ability to tell them yes in fact Santa is real and add a bit of extra magic to the world. Unfortunately I was raised not to lie and would tell them the truth that 'no of course they're not real,' but even just getting to stand on the edge of that possibility is wonderful. But whatever right? Kids will believe anything, of course they didn't know. Here's the thing, I found a jackalope mount in a thrift store and bought it (generally not big on the idea of taxidermy, especially mass produced but this is second hand so it creates no 'demand') and hung it on my wall, a happy childhood memory. In college I had a friend over, she was a 'non traditional' student so was in her 30s and had lived some life, she's intelligent, grounded and a sci-fi/fantasy/horror/mythology fan. She sees the jackalope on the wall and asks me what it is. I say, "A jackalope, I got it at the thrift store" She gets this look on her face and asks with all sincerity, "Wait they're real?" And here I am again as an adult talking to another adult standing on the edge of adding extra magic to the world. Not only is it possible this thing is real but that it is so common that I found one in the thrift store and hung it on my wall and it's somehow not the only thing I talk about, like it's just as normal as having a deer head or a fish. Like oh sure haven't you heard out west this magical animal they're just all over the place, no biggie. I once again told the truth and said they weren't real (this time mostly because I knew she'd find out anyways) but having that happen as one adult to another next level. The jackalope the little wild flower weed that grows through the cracks in the 'logical, non magical' cement of the sidewalk that is reality.

tulpa Tulpa to quote the Supernatural fan wiki: "A Tulpa can be created by many people concentrating on one thing while looking at a Tibetan Spirit Sigil. Once created, a Tulpa takes on a life of its own and no longer needs people to believe in it." If enough people think about and believe in a thing it can become real. When you dig into tulpa lore outside of TV/film they seem significantly less tangible. But a tulpa is a magical/mythical creature and legends and lore shift over time so I'm more than happy to adopt the definition I just quoted.

Why do I love tulpas so much? Two words: John Constantine I'm obsessed with that fictional disaster man, judge me if you must; okay okay so hear me out. There's this urban legend about Constantine, that if you write him he will eventually show up in your life. Four different Hellblazer authors have claimed to have met him, including Alan Moore who says he's crossed path with him twice. Which has lead some fans to speculate that if it were true John could be a tulpa. Obviously all of this is just tall tales but I just delight in the idea that (tulpa) Constantine could be out there doing his thing. For what it's worth, I've paid the admission price to meet John, I've written and published stories about him, sure it's just fanfic and it's just online but hey why not try ;) And I know I've put in him in at least one mind that wouldn't have thought about him otherwise, a friend's read my stuff that's not a fan, just sayin' tulpa John if you're out there I've added extra energy for you.
