Depends on what you want to do for a final build. You can keep him relatively even or go all in on HP. The grind to 35k is lengthy though, so you'll have plenty of time to grow him however. I would just worry about getting him to the cap first, then curate his stats with leeches if you want to put EXP into certain stats. I tend to not spend a lot of EXP on Elfric, I rely on boosting his stats for now overall.
