I think it was a good idea to allow pets to have non-unique names and leave the legacy names as a badge of pride for those who collected those unique names before the change, although it was a surprise to me since I came back from a long hiatus. I had collected pet names that were special to me in some way but in subtle ways. I don't like having a lot of pets but I was hoarding some names on the off chance I actually took the time to build up pet profiles. I still have a few pets that I really should just give up since I'm not doing anything with them but it's hard because I am now attached to them having that legacy name. My goal now is to have just a few pets and maybe cycle through names and hopefully that will encourage me to develop a few pet profiles at a time if I don't have ten empty pet profiles staring at me.
My 2006 "legacy" names were hideous. Hypnosis Wands for all in 2009, and haven't changed most of them. It's not so much the name for me as it is the age/color/size of treasure chest. I love my new names, and don't care if someone else has/had that name originally.
At this point, I'm pretty indifferent. I am happy to have my legacy names, but I don't think much about them. I am happy that non-unique names are a thing here now. It makes sense for Subeta.
...
I just came back from an almost year-long hiatus, and to be honest, I was pissed about the change at first. I worked really hard to find the names I did, and there was a lot of compromise finding alternate names that would still fit my character concepts. I loved having unique real word names. There was just something satisfying about finally finding the perfect name that fit a concept or aesthetic. There was also one high-stat pet I let go of due it not having the right name and not having the monies to rename it, so I am a little upset about that. I have not changed any of my pet's names since the change except for taking the extra "e" off of Ollie, and I most likely won't, either.
That said, I believe the change was a positive one. For new users, there is nothing more upsetting than finding out every single real name or word is taken, and having to throw a bunch of numbers or extra letters in a name. I am sure fanpet and tribute pet creators are all celebrating this change as well. I am also glad because there is no longer that cutthroat competition for names anymore. At one point I even found myself hoping other users would quit just so I could snag a specific name. That is definitely not a sign of a healthy, friendly environment. I do appreciate the legacy names, because it still gives some credit to those who worked hard for certain names. Maybe this is arrogant of me, but I like knowing I have the "original" pet with a certain name.
I'm also glad I could go on another hiatus if needed and not worry about losing my pet's names, and I no longer feel any guilt over taking a long time to work on my pets. I can work on them at my own pace now, which is nice because I typically do not have much time to spend on here and do not like to use my real money, so it takes me a while to save sp.
I am hoping this change helps put the spark back in everyone's creativity. It is nice to know we can have whatever name we want now. It opens up so many doors. My only real issue now is making decisions with SO MANY options, lol.

I'm happy about non-legacy/non-unique names. I guess I'm one of the few that never had a problem with names when they were unique, all my pets have names I chose for them that I like even if it wasn't necessarily my first choice. But I can see how frustrating it is for new players or people that have new pets over 10 years to resort to their 3rd 4th or 5th choice for names and try to make it work. There was always a lot of toxicity around stalking names. You can still have multiple fan pets but what makes them unique is the personality and story you give them.
In regards to the legacy tag under the name, I'm indifferent about it. It's something I don't see anywhere unless I'm looking at my profile and then it's just another element I have to move or remove.
My only wish was that staff gave more of a heads-up as to what the change was they were making. I would have loved to name change Nefertiti to something like Queen of the Nile before the change was introduced so that after changes were made it would say: Nefertiti Legacy name: Queen of the Nile
Like that is her legacy
I feel torn with legacy / non-legacy names! I've hidden the legacy names from most of my profiles (or will do when I stop being lazy :P) but there's a few pets with characters that really don't suit their name.... and I can't bring myself to change their names and lose that "they're the original one with that name" thing (yet).
I think I'm just finding it hard to be creative on more suitable names really - there's too much choice(!) for names and I just can't make up my mind!

I finally can name my pet Mohammed instead of Mohammad LOL
For real tho, it's a relief. It is way more attractive for new users. And the system of maintaining prestige via legacy names is still there for people who care. Kind of an all around win win situation.

Very odd change. I guess it's cool that any pet can have any name now, but Subeta already used to be it's own thing with spaces and special characters. Also I enjoyed checking names and grabbing them once they're inactive, it kept me interested in the site and I felt a sense of achievement grabbing a name I really liked. To me the inactivity system was good enough, I don't think it's really a step in the right direction. But it's not, like, bad. There's only so much you can do with a pet on here, I felt like having a name meant much more because of that.
i've always sought for low ID pets since i never managed to keep higher ones before. doubt that will change. BUT i'd rather adopt a low ID with legacy name as bad as it may be (unless like 3- or 4-digit) then without a legacy name at all. that said, i did change some of my pets names away from thier (long/number) legacy names now just because i could. (no money for you subeta) always just swapped name/renamed if i didn't like one. so i guess subeta won't sell stuff to me anymore, namechange was the only one thing i bought regulary. ^^
(will not realy understand why remove it, just hide it on profile, havn't noticed it showing anywhere else?) maybe some day they will add pet ID to the /pet=name/ scode-thing... might make me rethink things. hate how they become un-trackable once they leave a user... love looking on pets, checking back once in a while when i liked thier /story/disign/ whatever before. or if i adopted them out earlier.
*edit for missing letters, find any still? feel free to keep them ^^
I don't think I will create new pets, I like all my pets having unique URLs. Having a pet with a new name that complements his legacy name/url may be cool too. Like someone mentioned before, a legacy name as last name or title, and a new name as first name.
So I wish they had kept both options available. Meaning, the first pet ever created with that name would still get the pets/petname URL. Inactive accounts could still lose the pets/petname URL and legacy stats (but keep the pet name, and the pets/username/petname). But also giving the new option to create a new pet with any name you want, like how it is now, and I see how it can be great for fanpets, tributes or people who don't care about unique urls.
I used to go around checking the names I liked to see if I could find any good name available, and by doing that I could find a lot of nice pet profiles and ocs, profiles of people who often would have similar taste to mine, and get inspired by what they did with their pets. It was fun and nice when other people had nice stories for that name, and great when one I wanted was free to be taken. So I feel a bit nostalgic about it, maybe because I never felt jealous of the names already taken, it would just motivate me to find a new one or just change the spelling. And I had sometimes adopted pets with the free rename (petname_123) from the pound.
The only pet I could want to rename is my dog pet tribute from Salen to Salem, but he is already dead, so I think I should just leave it how it is. Maybe if I knew beforehand I could have got him a cool unique title as his legacy name and URL (Like abyss king), and then changed the non unique name to Salem. But it is what it is :/

I think legacy names are a great balance. I like that I get “credit” for the desirable names I managed to get before the changes, but I also find the new system very freeing and renamed a bunch that I wasn’t inspired by but was kind of attached to (like I had Amos, which I wanted to keep because it’s a nice real name & it’s associated with a band I like, but I didn’t really want a male character). I personally have no interest collecting legacy names I didn’t have before or letting any of mine go, but I do like that there is still a “rare” element people can chase if they like.

For me, part of the fun has always been finding pets with names that meant something to me. I chose to keep my pets legacy names but I also realize that there's more than one Jane in real life so why shouldn't it be the same on Subeta?
I hate the implementation of non unique pet names today as much as I did the day Keith announced it. I have nothing good to say about it whatsoever.
Legacy names are great.
I think we all were pretty scummy hoping people with good pets would leave, anyway. This is much better.
The old system of names was kinda lame tbh. There’s no need to have only one pet named Sparky or whatever. I have a few legacy names that I’ll keep as they are because I like them, and I probably won’t clear the legacy, but thankfully it opens up so many more options for new and old players alike to finally name their pets as they want. We already have UNs to be unique with and we have so many other ways to distinguish and show off the things we’ve accomplished. Pet names shouldn’t have to be one of them, nor should it come at the cost of new user interest.

In my opinion the old system didn't make much sense and I am honestly happy that everyone now can have their own Adam and Morpheus if they want. Some of the mails I got from people asking for my pet names in the past were just rude and painful to read so I'm glad that this is over now.
Most of my Pets still have their legacy names but I also changed some to names that suit my character better and yeah, for future Pets I dig the fact that I don't have to spend hours searching for silly substitue names anymore.
tl;dr: I love the change, was about time.
I like legacy names. A lot of users (including myself) have worked hard to get unique names or common names. I have names that took me years to get! I even went in the dictionary/thesaurus to look up different words for a real word name that was taken, but still wanted. I also waited for a lot of users to quit so I can get a name I really wanted.
I have proof that I was the first one to have a pet of that name, so that's why I like to display my legacy names on their profile. I know that not everyone cares about it, but I do. I've been here 15 years and I really hated the switch to non-unique. Now I have to work with it because what's done is done. It is kind of bothersome that everyone can have an Alexia and Pollen, but oh well.
I yeeted a lot of legacy names and I regret that now
I like it the change. I still hunt for nice legacy names same as if I would hunt for name before, only now I'm limited to what has already been created.
My only wish is that if a name is the only instance of that name on the site in existence that it would become a legacy name as well, thats what I thought it was going to be originally. No theres no point to find unused names :/
