(off topic sorta) In my experience, the way people react to rats and mice has a lot to do with how they first experienced them. If you first encounter them as pets or in a lab or classroom setting, you usually like them--but those animals are domesticated, not wild.
My first experience with these types of animals was having them turn up uninvited in a crap apartment as a broke student and having to keep them out of my food and clean up after their poop, at least once in my silverware drawer, so I'm really not a fan. I totally respect the feelings of people who like them as pets, but I also don't want to handle them or fuss with them personally.
I get so torn up when my pets pass away, though, that I'd never have pets with a lifespan under 10 years.
