In the Old West, a faded legend says, there once was a man who sold ravens. He had taught them to carry messages, you see, and he taught them well indeed, for each raven which he sold to an unaware customer soon brought its message back to him. He could sell but a few ravens in each shanty town and prospector's dig before his irate customers would come calling, and by then the man would have moved on to better locals.

One day this man's skinny horse twisted a hind-leg on the journey into the deeper north-west, a good three day's ride from the nearest sign of hospitality. The man knew at once that he would not be making the journey further, nor back again by foot, and so, after putting his frothing beast of burden out of its misery, he jotted down a quick request and tied it to a raven, yet how well the man had taught his flock; for before the day was out he found his friend in sight with no cavalry close behind.

Frustrated, the man again sent it on its way, and by the coming dawn he awoke to find his bird once more returned. His supplies were short by half and he would be hard pressed to stretch them much further, for he had eaten well at lunch and then at supper and now he would have to ration for himself and the remaining ravens, yet what to be done of his water?

Before long his ire won out, and the man caught his precious raven and butchered it then and there, and as he broke his fast he swore the same to the next of his flock which returned alone. And, true to his word, the second bird, and the third, met the same fate as the first, yet now his water was gone and he drank of the raven's blood to wet his throat.

And when he reached for a forth bird from the cage they had grown wise to his hungers, and they pecked and they quorked, and the man lost a little flesh. By now he had become quite addicted to his new work, and quite certain that he would die before another wagon came close. He ate through his forth and then his fifth raven, and only a few remained, silently judging him as he fed them their own kin in lieu of seed; they would rather starve then sup on this flesh.

With a week approaching since this tragedy began, the man soon found that his meal was denied, for he could not get a grip around another bird ere it stripped the flesh from his bones, and he grew greatly enraged. He dragged their cage to his fireplace, beside the long desiccated husk of his steed, and there he burned the last of his birds, and he went hungry that day and into the evening.

Then, as the sun was still setting upon the far horizon, something which quorked with a cold fury stirred amidst the ashes. It opened the canvas of the wagon and it climbed up inside and stared down with empty sockets upon the man who had once been so kind and loyal, slumbering now none the wiser to his plight. It hunched down and it pecked; and it clawed; and it gouged and it gorged, and the man awoke with terrible fright and much worse agony. He stared aghast as the beak plunged through his innards with no relent, and when it had feasted to full, the man lay hollow from chin to thigh, just as had the ravens which he devoured.

For a time there was another man who sold ravens in that distant town ahead, perhaps a brother or a distant cousin of the first. With no why, no reason, he abandoned his flock between one night and the next and fled for the local chapel, and to his dying day he lived as a mute servant. But when he had passed, his cellar room was found to contain strange and terrifying imagery carved into the walls, and to this day a rumor persists that if you mistreat a raven which has ever befriended you, something just as fierce and cold and hungry will come and take a peck out of your guts.

There's a crunch of a twig in the distance. You lift your gun, gazing down the scope. Your breath comes in foggy, heavy breathes as you wait, watching for a sign of a bear or a deer. Later, you plan to drag your prize home, hitch it to your truck, and take it to the taxidermist so you can hang it in your den. A black bear head would look great right above the fireplace. Your finger itches, lingering on the trigger.

Another crunch. It's to your right this time, and you turn. It could be nothing. It could be snow falling from the trees overhead. It could be a fox or a squirrel running through the underbrush. You hope it's something bigger, something you can proudly show off to your friends and family back home.

The smell of blood hits you. It fills your senses. That unmistakable metal tang. A third crunch. This time, it's behind you, and you turn.

The thing is taller than you, seven feet without the ears. It's whiter than the snow where it's not splattered with blood, chest bare and humanoid, the lower part like a massive rabbit. Your mind scrambles to catch up with what you're seeing. It could be laughable, if it wasn't covered in blood, reeking of death, staring down at you.

A lone eye blinks at you, slowly, it's blood red lips parting. Inside it's mouth is rows of teeth, sharp, bloodstained. A noise comes from it, makes your ears ring and snow fall off the nearby trees. Swearing, you fire once, twice. The shots barely seem to effect the creature, and it reaches for you, the smell of blood overwhelming, your life flashing before your eyes...

Private Outfit Private Outfit The Wolf Woman of Wirewood

To call this retched beast a wolf would be a lie, but it's the only part of it's body that seems to make sense. It is unknown just how this legend came about, or what it's origin story is, but it seems to accompany that of a woman with soot covered skin, covered in dirt and dressed in white.

There is one story of a woman living in the 1600s, who made her home in the woods and kept company with the local wildlife. She was known to be associated with snakes and wolves, and the occasional other wildlife. She was thought to be a witch, and often associated in secret with those who felt extended periods or morose. She found a way to cure their pain and make them better for short amounts of time. They would return to her later in their times of need.

But in these times being a witch was a death sentence, and even though she was inherently good she was eventually taken prisoner. They starved her with other women accused as witches and then burned her alive.

They say people see glimpses of her in the dark, but it is the sad who she truly presents herself to. They say if you ever venture into the woods at night with pain in your heart, she appears to you with a sweet smile and a scent that smells like flowers with an underlying scent of ash and burning flesh. But she's so beautiful, glimmering in the moonlight and so beckoning that your pain disappears for just a few moments and you desire this euphoria so much you cannot help but venture towards her.

But before you know it you're enveloped in by something that is not human. It is a beast composed of pure hunger. What once may have been legs was a tangled mass of limbs. Tentacle, serpent, fish, the limbs of dogs and birds tangled in those masses of scales and fur. It sports the head of a wolf with a jaw stretched wide open containing multiple mouths. Several red, mismatched eyes all swirling and shifting in every direction. A vicious mouth protrudes from its side, taking up most of its body mass an interrupting the four limbs that make it's arms, covered in fur and a scaled wrapped tail like headless snakes and eyes that seemed useless but still twitched just like that atop its head. It's body is covered in holes; open areas that lead to nothing but blackness. Like gaping wounds with only strings of flesh, or whatever this beast has, to hold it together.

And so it feeds on the sad. It lures them in with sweet scents and a beautiful face and then devours them. But its presence is still so calming and peaceful, even as this monster, that one would not even try to escape. It is said that the witch still retains part of her true nature. Seeking out those who are sad, but her hunger is so great and never ending that she devours them. She still remembers how it was to be starved, and instead of truly helping them she ends her life with her endless hunger. But her true beauty is just a facade, and her spirit has been fused with those of the creatures she took as companions.

They say that the reason she truly exists is because not only is her spirit vengeful from her burning, but she was the only true witch of the women who were burned. That kind of power lived on, even in death, allowing her to continue a shell of an existence but stopping her from moving on.

But if she devours all that she traps, how is it that they know of her at all? The rumors first started from those who claimed to have actually been able to escape her. To have broken free from her spell and saw her for the beast she truly was.

But of course, all of this is just an urban legend like most supposed creatures that go bump in the night and lurk the woods.

But just to be safe, maybe you shouldn't venture into those woods if you're anything but happy. Maybe it's best not to tempt the legend.

Outfit Not Found Along came a spider who sit down beside her and frightened everyone away. Unlike the nursey rhymes this spider didn’t simply scare the people away. Originally she started out as a normal girl on the farm. A little girl that was perhaps less fearful than she should have been. A spider unlike any she had seen before built a nest in the barn she was told not to go in. Without a second thought she ventured inside and got caught in its web. It wrapped her in silk over and over again after giving her a nasty bite and paralyzing her. She was to big for the spider however and while wrapping her in silk it sub came to death. She however did not. The spiders poison warped her into the being she now is. She now hunts her family who come to look for her for she is now more spider than man.

All Grooms fear The Lady of the Lake.

Legend says that there once was a blushing bride, so in love with the man she was about to marry, she couldn't wait until their ceremony to see him. She rushed through the church, greeting everyone with a wide smile on her face, until she found the love of her life in his dressing room. Her heart shattered into a million pieces when she discovered he wasn't alone.

In her despair, she ran out the back door, through the thick woods, the man who broke her heart chasing after her. Tears blurred her vision and she lost her footing, falling into a deep ravine. Her body broken, she lay face down, choking on the thick mud and the standing water. He called out to her, begging for forgiveness as her life faded away.

Men who have been unfaithful in the past claim to have seen a beautiful woman approach them just before their big day. She is stunning, and offers them a proposition they cannot refuse. If they pass the test and are deemed to be changed and of faith, they are set free. If they do not, the legend says that her fingers grow long and sharp, her body becomes deformed and hideous, and her jaw dislocates to devour the unfaithful whole.

An abandoned laboratory sits at the edge of the town, condemned and quarantined decades ago, yet it still lingers dilapidated and empty. For some reason, no banker nor government agency has come to claim the foreclosed building and land, which stretches for acres and acres through the forest. There are conflicting rumors about the purpose of the lab. About what they were studying. About how it all came to an end. The laboratory's demise is only remarked upon in a brief article in the local paper.

Those old enough to remember it when it still buzzed with crackling electricity and light are wise enough to stay away. It is only as time passed, and nature began to take its course, that people began to forget their caution, their instinctual fear of the unknown. Technology. Progress. There revelation that is no such thing as monsters.

They say that people go missing inside. The homeless who venture in for shelter and warmth are never seen again. The kid who strays too far in the forest. Urban explorers who think they know better than the signs and caution tape. None return to tell what they had seen.

But still, somehow, rumor gets out. A creature of flesh and steel prowls the building, eviscerating trespassers with a single, straight, surgical cut from which spores grow, fungus devouring and decomposing the corpse.

An experiment gone wrong, murdering all the scientists within and causing the lab to get shut down? A monster born from the abandoned scraps of technology after the funding was cut, a jumble of mad and broken parts come alive? A remnant of the high-tech security system, still maintaining its old protocols to remove unauthorized visitors?

Or maybe mother nature herself, taking back the land like ivy creeping through the cracks of concrete, breaking it down--she takes hold of the broken human cast-offs and makes it hers.

nobody likes to be forgotten This ghostly image is a daguerreotype of Lady Michiko Hargreaves, the late wife of the 13th Earl of Rochford. The Earl had the largest private collection of what he liked to call his "dear little Eastern treasures," in Europe outside of a museum. He considered the Lady worthy of his love and social position because of the attention her race and beauty garnered him. Their marriage was short-lived.

The Lady was murdered in her library by a French socialite who was originally betrothed to the Earl. Her eyes were never found.

The Earl's second wife died of a heart attack immediately after viewing the above daguerreotype. She had wanted a likeness to show off the renovated library to her father back in France. The Lady only appeared after the image was developed. After his second wife's demise, the Earl retreated to his hunting lodge with his collection and killed himself. The guilt of discovering the truth about the Lady's death and his marrying her murderer destroyed him.

The Lady roams the libraries of the great palaces and manors of Europe, searching for her lost eyes.

Billy Parsons was always a quiet kid. The youngest of eight, he spent most of his childhood tagging along on his brothers' fishing expeditions - not to catch fish, because Billy was a bit squeamish, but to study all the critters that lived in the area where they fished. By the time he was eighteen years old, he could have told you not only exactly what kind of fish and insects lived at Mosquito Lake, but what they were doing there and which ones preyed on who.

He could also have told you, as he did his family one night, that he was gay. His family, a clan of conservative Southerners by birth and choice, didn't take too well to the announcement, but Billy stuck to his guns. Times were changing, he explained; he was who he was, and they were going to have to get used to it. I can tell you that they didn't care for that declaration either.

Nobody's really sure what happened to Billy, at least not that anyone wants to talk about. The last time anyone saw him was the night of the Parson boys' biannual catfishing weekend, when he packed up a night of clothes and headed off with the rest of his brothers like he always did. The oldest boy, Dennis, said there was some roughhousing while they were setting up - adjustment issues, he called it; the brothers were having a hard time coming to grips with Billy's announcement and were trying to talk him out of it in their usual boisterous way. Henry, the second youngest, told police in his interview that he did accidentally knock Billy in the lake - but says he got out a few seconds later, none the worse for wear, and went off to change his clothes.

What everyone agrees on is that nobody saw Billy after sundown that night. Most folks in the area think he ran away - headed off to San Francisco, or New York, or wherever kids go these days. But if you ask the Parsons boys, most folks haven't seen the fish man.

They only saw him once. It was the next spring after Billy disappeared, after a hard six months of searching high and low for their missing brother. They'd combed the place over, of course - once when they first noticed he was gone, again when their parents came up to the lake, and a third time after the police had been through it - but Dan, the second oldest, had made a half-hopeful joke that maybe if they went up there and fished again, Billy would turn up squinting at periwinkles on the shoreline.

It was after dark by the time they had the boat out, but the moon was full over the lake so they kept their lights down low. Frank, the middle son, said he figures that's why he noticed it - a weird shape by the edge of the lake, almost human-looking, but with a head shaped almost like a rounded cone and what looked like a tail slithering out of its back end. He alerted the others, and somebody got a light on it, and that, the brothers said, is when things got weird.

It was the eyes that stood out first, they agreed. Huge yellow things like dinnerplates, way higher on the thing's face than any person's eyes would have been. The flashlight caught the pattern of scales on the thing's face, and a flash of some reddish stringy stuff coming off the back of its head - the boys couldn't agree whether it had been gills or hair they were looking at. The tail was as long as the creature's whole body, slick and smooth in contrast to its ridged skin, and the clothes the thing had on were filthy and tattered, like it'd been wearing them out there for months.

Dan and Dennis say it wasn't Billy. Frank says he isn't sure what he saw, except that "it wasn't anything natural that you'd find on Earth". But Henry says he got a glimpse of something unmistakable on the creature's wrist - a bright, rainbow-colored wristband, like the ones Billy had been wearing the night he disappeared.

Naturally, the story got a good bit of attention. All kinds of locals and outsiders swarmed to the lake, eyes and cameras open and ready to catch whatever was lurking out there. But apart from a few blurry photos of surfacing bass, nobody turned anything up. Eventually most folks chalked it up to a large catfish sighting, coupled with a serious case of survivor's guilt on the part of the Parsons brothers. But regardless of what the thing was or might have been, the boys haven't been to Mosquito Lake since.

The Serpent Siren (Updated)

Late at night, the chosen victim of the Serpent Siren will find themselves lost in the woods with no recollection of how they got there. Nervous and confused, they will hear a soft whispering among the trees, subconsciously guiding them towards death. Soon the whispering will become a clear hiss, and two white lights will appear among the darkness. Adrenaline and fear will quickly flow through the veins of the unsuspecting victim, causing them to stop in their tracks. When the face of a beautiful woman, with mysterious pearlescent eyes, comes into the light, the victim will relax and begin to ask for help. The woman won't answer. Instead, a chillingly smooth slithering noise will fill the air and the rest of the woman's body comes into view, a scale-covered deathly purple skin which starts at her torso and leads to the head of a venomous snake. The victim will notice, but it will already be too late as the Serpent Siren will wrap herself around her victim, the tip of her tail biting into flesh. Her victim will soon lose consciousness as the air is taken from their lungs and poison fill their bloodstream. Before the victim's eyes shut forever, she will grin, showcasing another set of highly venomous and deadly teeth and her disgustingly long forked tongue. Her victims are always chosen and none have ever gotten away, but others have claimed to have seen her bright white eyes staring at them through the trees, terrified that she may choose them next.

Story A doll's life is simple - as simple as can be. Sitting on the patchwork bed 'til Maisy's home at 3. Dancing in my dresses. Painting dark my hair. Playing lunch with teacups in the closet by the stair.

On April 15th, 9:42 PM, police in [REDACTED] County, Pennsylvania, received an unusually quiet call. The operator answered according to protocol but heard no reply, only the soft sound of scissors being opened and closed.

A doll's life is quiet - as quiet as can be. Maisy must be quiet so her mother doesn't see. Maisy's mother caught us playing teatime in her room. Maisy's mother beat us but that beating was her doom.

Police were able to trace the call to the Gardner residence, and officers were dispatched by 9:46. The body of 39-year-old widow Rose Gardner was found inside the home, wrapped in thick red yarn. A later autopsy report showed the cause of death to be blood loss from multiple sharp cuts along the chest and abdomen. Police were unable to locate her daughter, 6-year-old Maisy Gardner, in spite of a thorough search of the house.

One clue to the case may be the state of Maisy's bedroom. The drawers and cabinets were overturned, and the entire room appeared ransacked. Dolls were found thrown haphazardly around the room.

Reports from neighbors allege that Rose was a strict, domineering woman who did not allow her daughter to play with toys, including dolls. Further investigations have led to suspicions of criminal activity on the premises.

A missing person's report was filed for Maisy Gardner, but remains open as the girl has not been found. Sometimes, residents of the town will report seeing shadows of a little girl and her doll in the woods, sitting by the trees and making motions as if they were play-drinking tea. Yet, to date, no authorities have been able to corroborate such accounts, and police have ceased investigations of such reports, dismissing them as an urban legend.

A doll's life is happy - as happy as can be. My smile's stitched on tightly - and my Maisy's safe with me. Her mother didn't love us, but that much was okay. We're free now and forever, to have our tea and play.

Private Outfit Cursed Creature of the Swamp

Story Many years ago he was a normal boy. Then, on a dare, he ventured into the swamp and killed a snake. He cut off its tail and planned to bring it back home as proof of his bravery, but his foot got stuck in the mud. Strange, he thought, it’s like glue. It wasn’t like this before.

The tail turned to dust in his hand just as mud climbed up his leg and started to pull him down. He twisted madly trying to free himself. Within seconds he was chest deep in mud. He screamed for help and suddenly the swamp stilled. The frogs no longer croaked. The birds stopped singing. The wind vanished.

He lost his voice for a moment and then saw movement. A fog was drifting closer. It whispered to him, but its voice was full of hissing and buzzing and he couldn’t understand a single word. He couldn’t understand, but he could feel its anger rising.

Desperate for freedom, he pleaded for his life. “I’m sorry!” he shouted. “Please don’t kill me! I’m sorry!” He didn’t know what he was apologizing for, but then he remembered the snake. “D-don’t come closer. Your angry about the snake, right? It wasn’t my idea! Some kids back home, they’re responsible. I-I’ll bring you to them. Just let me go.”

The fog came closer and hissed louder. The mud started moving again and he panicked. He writhed as he sank beneath the mud.

The fog followed the boy and the swamp awoke with sounds.

That night, the boy crawled out of the mud. He was no longer himself. The spirit guarding the swamp had cursed him. Now he was an abomination. A hideous creature, half-snake and half-human, with a giant claw and glowing green eyes. He tried to speak, but a long tongue muddled his words.

He crawled along the ground, heading home, dragging the heavy tail behind him.

It was dawn when he reached the town. A girl was outside gathering berries. When she saw him, she dropped her basket and cried out as if she had seen a monster. The boy ducked back into the trees and felt that he had to flee. Now. He turned and slithered away, fast but clumsy.
