really had no idea there was anything wrong with those headdresses. i have pale skin - so i tend to use pale skin, not because of a race issue, i just tend to be super pale. my mom is is tan, she often is mistaken for a hispanic background, which is not the case.
but i do understand cultural appropriation, and did not intend on offending anyone, i just felt it looked spiritual and beautiful - peaceful even when mixed together. i didn't know i was stepping on an old issue. <3 thank you for speaking out.
i'm not here to offend anyone, as i except humanity itself - everything and everyone alike. i don't pass judgement, because i dont appreciate being judged myself </3 and i'm just heart broken that i've caused such a stir with my art.
ps this was not denied, it was brought up to me in a ticket when i asked about another item - my zelda tattoo. but yanno here it is, my newest cw on the shredder
Wow I'm sorry this happened to you. There are already so many headdress items on site and other Native type items (hairs, feathers, etc). I honestly don't see how yours is any different and how that outfit is offensive. There are so many Asian inspired outfits like, I can't wear kimonos because I am not Asian so that is offensive? Anyway, I hope this doesn't discourage you to keep making CWs!
I know, i didn't think i did anything wrong. But apparently thats been an issue? Its a petsite :/ Thank you though <3 I'm probably going to take a break after i finish the piercings ive been working on.
Hello dear ❤️ May I slot for your sexy studded trimmed tank, please?
Racism on a petsite doesn't make it less of an issue. It's still racism.
The dreamcatcher is culturally appropriative and it's at the discretion of staff to allow/deny it but the issue was more that it was coupled with a headdress. A sacred headdress on a mostly nude, light skinned avatar. That's what moved it from appropriative to racist. I am well aware that you're not the first one to make culturally appropriative items, staff does it quite frequently, and it's not 100% your fault your avatar was so offensive since someone had to allow that headdress onto the site in the first place, when it should never have been made.
You made a mistake, and it's okay. All you need to do is apologize and move on, not beat yourself up over it. You shouldn't be feeling as bad as you do. You don't need to stop making CW's or leave Subeta. This isn't a grievous offense that can never be forgiven.
What gets me though, is you never really apologized. You pinged everyone in your group including me here, expecting a new piercing or something only to say "I did nothing wrong, in my opinion, but if have offended you - I'm sorry." which is a total non-apology. Then you included a list of excuses, which I imagine were reasons why you did it in your mind, but coupled with the non-apology and putting "upsetting" and "offending" in air quotes make it seem like you're not sorry. Then you're posting about being the victim and how upset you are, and I'm not sure what to say.
I wanted to tell you not to beat yourself up, and that this was an easy mistake to make, and that you aren't the first or the last person to do so. Remember to breathe, take a break for a bit, and come back refreshed. You do good work, so please don't let this stop you. It is worth mentioning however that you are NOT handling this well, and seem to be making things worse. You might want to A. actually apologize, B. take down the racist avatar instead of linking to it, and C. not ping 77 people to your CW thread just for drama unless you were going to make a real apology, because all this conversation is off-topic and cluttering your thread and it doesn't reflect well on you.
Again I am not trying to be mean, I wanted to comfort you and assure you that this is something you can come back from and you're not a bad person, but taking 0 responsibility, making excuses, playing the victim and not apologizing sends the wrong message and I thought you should know that.
Like my avatar? ADORE IT on Style File![/align]
thanks, but ive deleted it now. i'll keep a copy of what ive said though on the back burner. im done explaining myself to anyone, especially here. im sorry. i didn't want to hurt anyones feelings over an avatar, but its just that an avatar, its playing dress up. most of us wouldnt wear it unpublic bc its offensive or silly looking... edited this was not the first time this has happened - and it wasnt a cultural problem last time. was just a basic item. slotting ty
So, I'm not trying to start drama here. But maybe you missed the part where she said she is Native? Because if so, then I can understand your confusion. But if you saw that and still decided to tell her that she was being racist about and culturally appropriating HER OWN CULTURE, maybe, just maybe, you're the one in the wrong there. If you somehow missed it, then maybe read more carefully before you try to drag someone into the mud. If you saw it and decided her skin was too light for you, maybe work on your own racist notion that she's not Native enough for you. I mean god, I get being pissed if someone appropriates a culture that isn't theirs, but going after someone for using things important to their own culture solely because other people use them wrong? Not a good look dude.
i was thinking of getting the cards myself how would i do that?
Omg. I thought this was a FUN PLAY site. Not a political soapbox sound off site.
. HUGS BABY! Like I said before. I think some people need to get a Real Life, if they are bringing such things into a play site.
THE WORLD IS DIVERSIFIED
That's the way God made us. It's what makes the world interesting. I find it's the narrow minded bigots that seem to make big "to dos" over things. They really need to accept that We All like Different Things to wear. ESPECIALLY ON A FANTASY PLAY SITE.
IN MY OPINION.
Grin. OUCH. Oops I just fell off my soap box ?
nods i know i know, <3 ily. hugs time for a damn drink.
yeah im having a hard time understanding the problem too, but yanno, everyone is entitled to their opinions.
Lol . True true (on both opinions and DRINKS)
:(. But I can only have 2 tonight. lol I'm out of 'stuff' to mix. With the girl coming tomorrow (my daughter) I'm hoping to get to the store and getting me a bottle of wine. (That's 'free' drinks) lol
I need her to come back next week when I get my check and I'll pick me up some BAILEYS. Yum.
?
YES DRINKS! cheers to you Awww only 2 :c dangit. I hope you have a good visit ^___^ <3 lmfao baileys always cracks me up bc this online video called "old greg"
This shouldn't even be a debate. As a man of Cherokee and Blackfoot ancestry I can tell you with certainty that there is a distinctive difference between war bonnets and dreamcatchers and that your item will not be denied for being a dreamcatcher.
Dreamcatchers, while vastly appropriated, don't cross a line (as many things have skirted the lines on Subeta). While they are seen as a unity among Indigenous Nations since they were shared from one to another, they have all but been taken and in many cases are unrecognizable.
War bonnets, however, should not have been taken, dragged, and trampled on and none of us have the right to argue why people should not be allowed to use something so sacred as a costume. War bonnets are earned, loved, and have deep meaning. You should know this. You should know how much they mean to us, to our people, our nations, to know that they are not just a fashion statement to look cute on some Coachella attending hipster.
If a Native artist chose to do things to honor our people, to show love and respect, that is one thing. A war bonnet included, if based directly off of someone personal that EARNED it and was honored by their tribe... Then that is one thing. But something like that, something that means that much, would not be done so publicly and treated like some costume.
I understand that you didn't intent to offend. I understand that there are some blurred lines. But please, understand that this is an opportunity to learn and grow, as we have all had to face at some point in our lives. If you wish to do the dreamcatcher tattoo, that's perfectly fine. You are Native, it means something. But please understand that war bonnets are in a whole other field.
thank you <3 I'm learning from this: I know how important headdresses are. I just thought wearing it would show respect in a way- because i included cultural items- like another moon tattoo andwhatnot. I do understand how anyone would be offended- especially being of thicker blood than i- given i have pale skin. I just wish i knew more and had more real artifacts from our past in real life- because it seems the world takes the subject of our people lightly. No one had more respect for this earth than our ancestors. <3 Thank you. I do need a little break from cws, excluding shit I promised. I care too much, and thats a problem- its just art.
slot pretty please dear for the Nostalgic Inky Dreamcatcher &&& let me ping another fellow dreamcatcher lover and see if she would like a slot too. :)
PS. I don't know what happened recently on here hon but keep moving forward. ❤
slotting you & moving forward <3 ty lady.
I'd like a slot for the Dreamcatcher please. :) and thank you for alerting me!
will slot thank you <3 ty for bringing a friend n_n
A friend of mine is Chactaw, she's overcome a lot of obstactles in her life including alcoholism and drug addiction, to commemorate these victories, Annie made herself a Warrior's necklace, an Elder saw it and laid into her. I understand that the making and bestowing of this necklace is sacred, but I also think those victories merited that necklace
