I live in very rural Pennsylvania so there's always some sort of wildlife every time you open the front door.

  • tons of birds. a lot of cardinals in the winter, a lot of blue jays in the summer. a mix of everything really. finches, titmouses (titmice?), chickadees, hummingbirds, hawks, owls, turkeys, and even eagles.
  • rabbits. less common in the yard now that we have a chocolate lab.
  • groundhogs. oh my gosh the groundhogs. there's one that lives under the shed and is the size of a toddler.
  • deer. we have a trail camera in our yard and in one night there was a herd of seven doe caught at around 1:30 am in our front yard all in the same picture. at least three different bucks were taken at various times through-out the night (a spike- which were huge spikes, I've never seen them get that long without having any points, a five point, and an eight point.) my fiancee hunts (most people do around here, many people survive off of venison in our area) so he moved the trail camera to his shanty since rut is starting and he wants to see if there's any activity in that area still since rut makes them unpredictable.
  • bears. we had a big black bear on our property (three hundred acres, respectively) before, I haven't seen it in the past year but others have said they have. my fiancee hit a baby black bear with his truck coming home from over the mountain one night. the baby was fine, it barely got nicked by the front bumper (at a pretty low speed) and went under the truck, and scurried off.
  • raccoons. man, I love those little trash pandas.
  • opossums. we feed our dog outside sometimes if he wants to spend the day outside, and if he doesn't finish his food it's an opossum smorgasbord.
  • snakes. I feel so bad for the black snakes that bask on the road. most people I know try to hit them on purpose and kill them for fun. they aren't harming anyone! copperheads do give me the willies, though. we don't get rattlesnakes in my neck of the woods, but a lady I know who lives an hour away used to get rattlesnakes on her front porch all the time. they had to move when they had a baby because they just couldn't take the risk.
  • we get some really cool bugs. mantises and walking sticks are the coolest.
  • if you tip over some rocks in the woods in a damp area you could probably find a salamander.
  • creeks have crayfish/crawfish/crawdads/whatever you call them.
  • the basic squirrels and chipmunks. they don't get a lot of love from people who hunt because those hyper little things are loud and easily sound like a full grown deer trotting through the forest.
  • coyote and foxes, although they're mainly only seen from a distance- like running across the road at night.

Funnily enough, the only time I seen a fox up close and personal was in Ocean City, Maryland. Dead Freddie's restaurant. It was walking around the parking lot. Everyone suspected rabies because that's abnormal for a fox.

Magpies, crows, pigeons, which are cool in descending order. Then there's seagulls which have no class and I'm far less ecstatic about. At least they stopped squawking at like 4am in the morning. I'll give them that.

Gray squirrels. Sadly no red squirrels.

Saw a large house spider a few weeks ago, um, no thank you.

Badgers. Wild rabbits.

Yeah, that's about it for the city's wildlife. orz

Seen alot of birds from the town library parking lot. A lady stopped me outside one day to point out the cedar waxwings chirping in a tree. Kind of cool when strangers stop to chat just about nature. :)

Another time, a bald eagle sitting on top of a parking lot lamp. It looked like other smaller birds were griping at it. Maybe it killed one of theirs or something.

How do you like your trail camera? Is it easy to set up? I've been thinking about getting one, there are so many options. Also where you live sounds awesome to be so surrounded by nature like that. I've always dreamed since i was little to find salamanders in the wild. They're so cool.

Im still learning the wildlife here but the past two autumns I’ve seen wild turkey by the river, even a huge group of them in someone’s yard. They are huge and so strange looking, they usually startle me before I realize what they are- giant garbage bags on legs? :’D And then they’ve seen me and I’ve startled them and they are flying off very loud and awkwardly, haha.

i really wish i saw more wildlife. the state i live in is known for buffalo and prairie dogs, and I moved here under the pretense i would be seeing one or two of those dudes on the reg but then come to find out i have to drive about an hour to see them... on a reserve.... that's what i get for not doing enough research i guess. so as far as wildlife i've seen:

  • roaches
  • pigeons
  • some dodgy looking blackbirds.

instead, here is a list of wildlife i have seen in my life and wish to see again before i die.

  • a chipmunk
  • an opossum
  • an opossum mom with it's children
  • a raccoon
  • a raccoon with children
  • chipmunk children
  • a hummingbird
  • LIZARDS: ANY KIND
  • a fox (if we're being ambitious)

thank you for coming to my tedtalk.

I saw a bunch of Javelinas (wild pig things) on my way out to my friend's house last week, they have a habit of running alongside the interstate. I went on a run with my dog earlier and saw a coyote in the park, probably with a few others lurking about.

We don't really have squirrels, or sparrows or chipmunks here, so my yard is filled with lizards and scorpions, though its winter so most of them are in hiding.

My parents live in an area that is really woody and we used to see possums, raccoons, and chipmunks all the time. Makes me nostalgic. I hope wherever you see them you'll see baby skunks too, it's so surreal seeing them bob after mama skunk at dusk. All the bigger mammals seem to like the peace of dawn or dusk.

Saw a bald eagle fly overhead while driving. It's the little white head and wingspan that gives them away.

Drove past a bald eagle sitting on a lamp post today. It turned its head and was so beautiful. I would have loved to stop and admire it, unfortunately it was on a busy bridge.

More wild turkeys in the same yard by the river! They are quite large! I wanted to stop and take a pic but there was traffic behind me. I wonder if someone is feeding them there? I haven't seen them puff up their tails yet, they're always standing tall and craning their heads to stare at my truck as it passes.

I feel like the images I get from "wild turkey" google search really don't show their size well enough, but that might be a bird thing in general. So many birds always seem way bigger in life than in pics.

I see coyotes at work fairly often...caught this one on camera last night. There are tons of rabbits in a greenbelt behind this industrial zone so I guess that's why they come around. It's a fairly urban area though so it always surprises me a little to encounter them here. I enjoy seeing them, but I worry about them getting hit by cars.

Besides the white tailed deer, possums, coons and annoying Canadian geese. Lol

An Eagle. We have one that lived right down the road from us in the park and I've seen it about 2-3 days this week. Sure is amazing.

Wild turkeys, deer and various birds. Moose will be out and about soon, as will black bears.
