I don't think it's necessary, but IF an alternative was created, maybe they could make it like an sP sink, where you can 'buy a weapon to give to the front lines' with sP, but you don't actually receive a weapon, it would just go 'poof' and like 100 points of damage would be done to the opponent?
Just so you guys are aware, we tossed around some ideas for adding in a "supporting" feature to this boss battle, but in the end, we decided that it really needed some further research and discussion into how it would work and how to make it fair for everyone. Rather than toss something up in a rush, we're going to revisit this for future events and hopefully provide some variety when appropriate.
Unless it costed 1 million, should do WAY LESS DAMAGE than 100. Most people can barely do 20 in one fight.
My average is around 500-600, and I have a tier 10 pet.
Obviously the numbers would be worked out by the staff with the behind-the-scenes data figures.
Actually, in that three minutes between my post and your ping, I actually found a way where a 100 damage would work.
If it can only be done once. Or a really limited amount of times. :)
Top prizes in battle events should be well, hmm, given to people who actually battle. Not people who have too much SP to grind into the system
that would be an interesting alternative - for people with weak pets or who just want to do more than one thing.
Public Ping Group - Xanadu Galleria and RAE Collab
I really really extremely want:I really do like the idea of an alternative, and I'm super glad it was considered! I don't mind battling, but it gets really, really repetitive. It'd be nice to have options or do one thing, then do the other, and so on. Get to mix it up.
I really like the idea of an alternative to battling. I mean, I want to eventually get into battling - I'm slowly training one of my pets - but even once I get a decent battle pet, I really think battling is a pretty ...boring feature. It isn't interactive to really say that it is, and I'm not too fond of turn-based battles.
So I would really, really love some kind of game and/or other tasks I could do... As long as the game doesn't hurt my head (I think it was the sledding game with the cybils that give me headaches and make my dizzy? I know a LOT of people have issues with that game) x'D Something set up like like Omen Island Raiders or even Spectrumtail could be interesting.
I have a hard time understanding how I can be helpful when my pet can do 200 damage maximum, but jaxon can and does regularly heal for 1500?
I'm casually plugging away anyway, but I do wish there was alternative options. It's not necessary but it could be something a hell of a lot more fun for people to be able to choose how they take part.
I like variety. That said I actually do like the types of - whole community has to come together to take on something neigh unwinnable.
I know that every time I see that hp bar go down it's because there are tons of other subetans all working like I am to take out tiny chunks of damage (and it's a rather amusing mental image) as everyone does a very small part, that can take something with over 200mil hp O.o
But still - Variety is the spice of life! I have a barely just turned tier 4 that I've been raising up slowly pretty much since I started, (and when I remember) and am afraid I'll never manage to hit tier 8 or so and be able to tackle the really big targets but it's still somewhat fun to be able to participate in the battle royal.
Also Good to know! I really appreciate that you guys are taking the time to add things right rather than just adding them before they're fully fleshed out. It's comforting to know you guys care about details like that.
So this year we had Tempest and Hydragellos.
Why did we need another battling-for-long-hours route?
@ gremlin because some of us actually enjoy it? morostide = battling. this is the first group boss we've had for the holiday, but still. boss fight = battling for hours = more people have a chance to land some damage.
my main concern with having an alternative to the boss fight is that the top prize is often a weapon, and call me grinchy, but I don't think someone who's playing a game/donating items/whatever should be eligible for a tier 11/12 weapon, even if they pulled a top score.
That's not grinchy at all! It's the official direction staff took concerning weapon release. That they should be gotten via battling!
Yes, I agree that questing/playing games should be disabled when the boss is at 25% or so. That way, we won't have an anticlimatic ending of the boss dying because of someone questing.
Also, that's why I want them limited. We can't battle to get quest points, after all. We can't play games for quest points. We have to quest. Even if it's horribly grindy. The same should go with battling events. It sucks, but not everyone likes everything on the site.
BTW, it took 25 hours for Jaxon to be defeated with battling alone. Having alternatives might mean that...not everyone could have had a shot at highscores.
And with auto-refreshers, no less. Hence why I don't want this "support from sidelines" thing ever implemented if there is no rule to freeze players who abuse auto-refreshers.
We work our asses off in training our pets--many of us of have multiple battle pets--and sacrifice a lot of in terms of weapons, scrolls, sPs, actual money, basic human needs like sleep or having fun outdoors or at parties.
So yeah, we fucking deserve to be rewarded for training our pets from ground-zero to capped t12's. You want the best prizes? Quit bitchin' and train like everybody else.

I can't wait until this is implemented because then it means we'll have an awesome player vs player battling competition alternative to those silly dress-up contests... right...?
No but really battling is a part of subeta, fighting has been in every single plot ever, if you don't want to participate in it, then you're actively making that choice not to... If you don't want to train your pets when you know for sure that it would benefit you in a plot to train them, that's a choice. If you "don't have time/sP for training" then you don't have time for subeta so why should you get the same rewards as someone who literally spent 24 hours straight putting in serious effort, in addition to the time and dedication put into training a decent pet. I don't spend crap on my wardrobe so I don't expect to get the same prizes for HA contests for people who dedicate their time to that. I still participate because I want to, knowing I literally have no chance of winning. The same principles could apply to everyone complaining about battling.
Yep some like it. Does some signify the majority? If some does signify the majority, then most people must therefore like the way the plot was ended, and there are no problems.
Ignore this
But let us drop this assumption that the majority like it. And let us drop the assumption that the majority dislike it. Let us assume that all people on this site do not have an opinion of battling. Or that this opinion was erased, that may be a better thought experiment.
Now if we assume that everyone had a tier 1 pet, and everyone battled (and let us also assume that time is not factor; ie that everyone has the same amount of time to play Subeta and do battling on a short notice). I would say that this is based on effort and is therefore fair. However, let us drop this completely. It has nothing to do with what follows. And,it has nothing to do with the effort put into their battle pet.
Now let us assume that there is another game. This game is made easier by having a higher number of pets. This game requires both time and effort. And most importantly, let us not forget that this game is but a feature of a site (Let us assume this was a petsite, we shall call it ExtremelyLaggy for no reason whatsoever) with many games and activities. Most of which do not require a pet. Let us assume that there was a plot that had quite the storyline, well-written and such, that involved a multitude of tasks. Let us assume that there is only 24 hours to do a special, once in a lifetime, last step of the event. The prizes from this event are some of the best and rarest items on the site; however the majority of these prizes are given out in the final step. The other steps are meaningless compared to the prizes won by the final step.
Imagine Player A. Player A will spend 20 grueling hours grinding in this game, as he has but one pet. Imagine Player B. Player B will spend only 5 minutes grinding in this game, as he has but 50 pets. (Imagine Player C. Player C decides that although he has enough time and pets he would rather spend time doing homework and spending time with his partner) Imagine Players D-Z. They participated in the plot, but did not do so in the final step. Players D-Z
However, there are other games on the site that everyone can do on the basis of effort, that means that if the staff had chosen another game(s) that would mean that each player within the 24 hour time limit would only lose on the basis of not putting in enough effort (This assumes that all players, except Player C since he is a dirty bastard, have these 24 hours open to them).
Player B wins.
So I have a question. Was this the best way to end a plot? Would you consider, as a staff member, catering to a player that had a monopoly of pets OR would you prefer another game as a means of attaining plot points? Obviously Player B deserves to be rewarded for having so many pets in this game, but the effort of others and the other games/activities that people like to do on this site are ignored as options. Sounds fine, what's the big deal. It's just one event.
Now... let us return to battling and add in the following factors:
And we shall add in the fact that this is another battling boss battle which has been done already as a plot this year, meaning that it is an event catering to battlers. AND, that we already had a fantastic release of opponents this Morostide. Earning battlers not just exp and battling tokens but also items which they can resell. AND, that battling prizes from the final step are worth so much more than any other prize because if it is a high tier weapon it will probably also be a wearable. That isn't to say that battlers who spend sP training, CSC buying LE opponents, sP spent on pylonics, resources spent on weapons do not deserve to get rewarded for what they do. They definitely need to! But such an event happened twice beforehand.
Let's return to the original question. Some people enjoyed it. Some people did not. However saying that some people enjoyed it does not mean that it is the optimal last step of a plot. Subeta cannot cater to every user, obviously, but there are fairer methods that could have been implemented.
However, there is one question that truly matters. Why do players who do not battle stay on the site?
Now someone needs to post in order to proceed to spoiler .
Pretty much. It's nice not to forget battlers. I invested a lot of time in battling Jaxon. While it was a choice of mine, I'm pleased by the opportunity. It's a choice to be a battler, just like everything else. It would be unfair to those people. The plot has been easy, in my opinion. I'm glad we got some decent battle.
Because there are events on the site where you don't have to touch battling
This year, you had New Year, Survival, Masquerade, Alegarten, Pekaboo and Keelhauliday where you could 100% everything without touching battling, and 10th anniversary had a day devoted around battling, but no achievements concerning this specific battling.
Meaning that you only had Morostide and Vesnali where battling was important. OVer half of the events had nothing battle-wise. That's why people who don't battle stay, because battling is not mandatory in all events.
Ahhh, but you have not seen the magic of spoiler !
I'm not against more battle opponents, I am against having the same kind of boss fight three times in a year. And I am for a bit of diversity in plots that will only come once. Events like Vesnali will happen every year. You can miss a year and catch up on all those items next year. Nothing of value lost with effort.
, don't open this spoiler
Subeta is a pet site[very contestable].
Battling is the main thing you can do with your pet.
However there are other things you can do to earn currency and many other activities which are awesome!
But still, battling is the main goal. You are a good battler, it means that you are winning the game. Because the game is a? Pet site! You're right! 10 points for Gryffindor!
Assume there are two players.
Player is told by Player to shut the fuck up and battle.
Player figures out that all the things in his wardrobe, his vault, and such don't matter. Plus, life is busy and you can only drop in every now and then like a casual player. They could miss on limited opportunities to nab stuff at any time! Certainly with this in mind, Player feels like they shouldn't be spending any money on said pet site. Especially when they are being told by other users to shut the fuck up and battle. YAY :D! But P#1 doesn't like to battle, they also don't like people telling 'em to the act of shutting the fuck up... uh oh. And, he figures out that winning is doing good at battling!
DUN DUN DUN
Player decides to quit. They sell all their stuff (following the rules and tipping nicely of course) for art, and they move onto another game that they can win!
{Player can't sell their pet(s), lulz. And their other stuff in time}
One day, Subeta closes down.
Player wins. GG
All of you player are lovely. I actually like battling and my battle pet, but I like winning more.
Gremlin will be victorious. Gremlin is now Player . Or well, player .3. I'd like to stay around and amass more currency for my new goal. But really, some of the posts in this thread have enlightened me. The purpose of a game is to win; I have nothing against this site but I feel as if it has served its purpose. I'm not complaining or whining, I am bragging actually.
GG, nubs.
Blame Tempest. Tempest is the boss fight we shouldn't have had. Not Jaxon.
The things in your vault matter for achievements and such. Remember how many people whined that the new collection achievements were too hard and rewarded hoarders?
Without a decent wardrobe, LOL GOOD LUCK DOING SOMETHING WORTHWHILE IN BOTB. Which was a glorified popularity contest. Or Epicon. Or Summer in Centropolis.
Battling is not the only way to "win"
