Yeah, I really can't recommend it highly enough.

As for Harry Potter, I actually quit reading that somewhere around the fifth book... I just completely lost interest, but I totally feel like I've missed out and I keep meaning to read the series from the start. I remember getting the first and second books for my birthday way back when they came out, and falling in love.

Yessss this is a good chat group!

I like to read two books at once--one in English, the other in French. Right now I'm reading Perfume by Patrick Süskind and Germinal by Émile Zola. I really need to work on my French. x_x

Lately I haven't been reading much fantasy lit. That said, my sister strongly recommended Charles de Lint, so I might check his work out soon.

It's hard to get into something you lost interest in. Just because it's popular and has a following doesn't mean you will like it any more if you give it another shot. I grew up with it: the first book came out when I was twelve, so it's been ingrained into me.

I used to be a two book reader but the older I guess the more difficult I find that to be!

I just finished reading Assassin&;s Apprentice by Robin Hobb, at the recommendation of someone I follow on Tumblr. It was free on Kindle, so it seemed like it would be rude not to, you know? As it turns out, I really enjoyed it, which is unusual for me because it&;s all first person and I&;m not normally big into first person.
I actually came into this just to talk about that series of books which I originally read when I was fifteen and I really connected with the main character. There's another set of trilogies that I'm sure your friend mentioned, but there's also a few other trilogies that were written by her which interconnect with that universe and its fantastical timeline. I just finished reading her most recent book, Fool's Assassin, and I'm dying over here!!

I did quite recently (okay, it was last year, but whatever) go through a phase of being big into post-apocalyptic stuff, along the lines of Earth Abides and I Am Legend. Those are actually two of my favourite books and I mean to read them again as soon as I come by the means to buy them. I gave all my books to charity at the start of the year, which I kind of regret now. xD
I Am Legend was definitely an eye-opener for me in terms of what it would be like living by yourself in an unfriendly terrain... awesome book. I see already has, but I second their opinion that you should definitely read Perfume by Patrick Suskind. It was turned into an AWFUL movie with Alan Rickman, but the book is definitely creepy, too. For YA fiction I highly recommend the Animorphs series as more YA series need to do what it does: treat the intended audience like adults with showing that fighting and winning wars aren't things where you can keep your hands clean. But, as it's YA, there are still some funny moments in there too. I'm re-reading it as an adult now and I can't believe I survived my childhood when I read thisXD

Right now I'm reading the final Fifty Shades book since I'm a poor soul that can't comment on something unless I have read it.

Will read either Gone Girl or The Maze Runner next.

Edit: I have a Kindle Paperwhite and I love it. I was given it because I read too much and the house is too smallXD

Oh wow, I never thought it was like that?! Well, it makes things even more interesting now. I'll probably end up getting one if most of my books are on it.

Are you enjoying it? I read the series and I'm still a bit on the fence about it. I enjoyed it, but then parts of it just annoyed me.

I suppose you're right. I think it's just that I remember how it resonated with me when I was a kid, and it kind of bums me out that I've lost that connection. I still love the world, for all its flaws, but Harry Potter and I are just incompatible, I guess! xD

Yeah, I was really surprised (and pleased, oh god, so pleased) that there are so many books in the same series/world... I'm not sure why, but I kind of assumed the Farseer trilogy was a relatively new release. Now I've got a whole treasure-trove of books waiting to be picked up whenever I feel the need to settle down with something I'm confident I'll enjoy. ❤️

As for Perfume, I've tried to read it before but I seem to have this mental block where books translated into English are concerned. It just feels really jarring and unnatural, and I feel like I'm missing out on all the little nuances I'd get if I read it in its original language. I had the same problem with Battle Royale.

I love L.A. Meyer's Bloody Jack books! I'm so psyched for the next one that just came out last month. I didn't know it until just now but L.A. Meyer died this summer. It's heartbreaking really...

Animorphs were out when I was young- 11ish- and it was aimed at the age group I was in then. Middle school books are a bit too young but I do really like books aimed at high schoolers- young college students (ex: I really like the books The Program and The Treatment).

Yes Kindle PW ♥

One of my friends tried to read HP when she was younger and couldn't get into it, and tried as an adult and still couldn't do it. She loves the world, she loves the movies and she loves to read but the HP books just don't work for her. It happens. :)

Ah, I didn't really enjoy the movies, either... But I'm glad I'm not literally the only person in the world who just isn't into HP. I was beginning to worry it was just me. I'm halfway embarrassed to mention it around my friends -- I don't like Doctor Who, either, so they have their growing suspicions that I've reverted back to my 2005 "I hate it because it's popular!" self. xD

Animorphs does hold up surprisingly well which can't be sad of every YA book (because a lot of YA authors think their audiences can't handle stuff which is also why I adore the last books of Divergent and The Hunger Games, well...a certain decision of what happens to certain characters).

I didn't think I'd like Kindles due to me preferring physical copies of books but they are awesome. Press a word and you can figure out what it means and then I like the sharing quotes optionXD

Edit:

Not everyone has to like popular things. I'm marrying someone that doesn't like HP or Doctor Who while I adore both series to deathXD

Welps, fellow , I finished reading Brave New World today. I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand it was extremely interesting and had a fantastic ending. On the other hand, the story telling wasn't too great and I found it difficult to get through.

Rating it 3/5 on GoodReads when I get around to it.

I'll probably spend a good part of tonight deciding what to read next.

I am currently reading Lasher by Anne Rice. I had to re-start because I forgot when I left but I don't mind because it's a great book. I just sometimes don't give myself the time to read and rather go outside or play on the internet /sad/

I'm currently working my way through a bunch of books I got from my high school's library. The librarians and the principal decided to get rid of a bunch of novels and reference books that weren't checked out for 5-10 years, so I asked if I could take as many as I wanted to. So, now I have like 50+ books in my room to read lol. I got a bunch of Dragonriders of Pern novels, The Golden Compass series, the Percy Jackson series, a few Stephen King novels, and many others I found interesting enough to take home. I'm currently reading Dragonworld by Byron Preiss and Michael Reaves. Most of the books were either damaged slightly, or weren't taken out in years, so that's why the school was replacing them.

Oh man, that's pretty sweet, I love free books. xD There's a place literally two minutes from where I live called (oddly enough) Books For Free, and it's all books rescued from landfill. You can take three books every time you visit, and there are some real diamonds in there. I haven't been in ages, though... they're staffed entirely by volunteers so they often have to stay closed because there's no one available to watch the place. :( Last time I went, I got American Psycho, but I couldn't read it, it was too violent (which is really saying something, because I'm not normally squeamish, but I can only take so many scenes of violent, explicit torture before enough is enough).

nice, sad about the volunteering part, but a really nice idea :) Would be nice to have something like it here in Denmark, books rarely cost under 51 USD or thereabout... hence why I normally read eBooks unless I get really lucky and find a nice book in a thrift store.

Ehh, I've read a lot of different things unfortunately I've never been in the habit of remembering titles.. or looking at the author name unless I'm on a binge. Lately I'm reading the Hannibal series, and also the Age of Fire series :) I also loove Dystopian/Pondering the future Sci-Fi anthologies, found a lot of awesome anthologies when I worked for the school library.

Man it's pretty sweet you got all those books for free! I love free library books that are otherwise going into the trash bin- I've gotten a few that way over the years but never that many.

If you've never read Battle Royale I suggest staying away from that one! Extremely violent and gory. (But holy crap, a damned good book otherwise.) I started reading The Road today at your recommendation. I wasn't expecting it to be so... poetic, is the word I'm going to go with.

I'd really like to recommend I, Robot by Isaac Asimov to you based off your enjoyment of scifi, dystopian and speculative fiction. It's nothing like the movie so don't judge whether or not to read it based off of Will Smith. :P
