It was described to me as 'a grown-up petsite that isn't lame like -a list of other petsites-'. I'd probably describe it as 'a browser-based game with customizable pets and avatars'.
I've described it to my dad a few times, and it pretty much was summed up as, "a pet site where I like to cram food down my pet's throat, play silly flash games, and put my avatar in crazy clothes", but he just refers to it as "that pet site you like". Other than that, I don't really talk about it with anyone who isn't already on the site.

I dont! Hahaha, id rather people not know i still play on a "petsite"
It doesn't really come up. One time I was asked what I was doing when I was questing and I said I was on a pet site.
"Sube..what ? What are talking abou- oh you saw it in my bookmarks ? That's just a website for kids my sister used to play when she was 14"
Yeah. No one would understand. I couldn't explain it to myself.

lolz... I joined because a group of my friends from Neopets were going to. I got hooked, & they abandoned me...
I never tell anyone. I did tell my brother who used to play neopets "it's like neopets but so much better" my mom "it's a really fun site where you can adopt pets and stuff" and my husband "I'm playing games on the internet."
I don't tell other people about Subeta. My mom knows about it, but as far as she knows it's "just a petsite".
I have told them the same thing you have; a mixture between Gaia online and neopets. Most of my friends don't play virtual pet sites, and the ones that do, don't really like the layout of the site so they never signed up.
I never get asked about it, so I don't talk about it with anyone. No one else knows about this site except me in the family. I don't have any friends, so they don't know. My family's friends don't know since I rarely talk to them.
I never get asked about it, but I'd describe it as like Neopets, but for adults.
I'd also say that there is a lot of variety on this site, and a lot of things to do. There is a great community with great art, and a great game that can be played for years. Also, you don't have to spend money to have some fun - although you'll have more fun if you spend.

Me: "Oh, it's this nerdy little pet site I play where you have these pets you can take care of, kinda like tamagotchi?, and you can create stories for them. It's also a dress up game where you can characterize a human avatar, and you can play little games and quests for virtual currency. Its demographics mostly consists of teen to college-aged girls and gay guys though there are a few straight guys... but you probably wouldn't like it blushes"
Him: "looks around on the site I don't get it....I don't get it....I don't get it....Can't we watch some wrestling instead?"
Me: "YOU DON'T KNOW ME AT ALL! ;-;"

If I mentioned this to my friends, they probably make me shot gun a four loco, yeah that is how they are so I don't. To someone who is familiar, then my description would be Like neopets, but you are not a nobody and billions can still be made.

I just describe it as an avatar/pet site. I don't really feel the need to explain it is for adults, though. I don't have to be a kid to be allowed to have fun :).
I didn't realize it was so common, but I usually tell people it's like a grown-up, non sellout version of Neopets. I emphasize that the best parts are lots of site events, a more mature community, and that you can get your pets and avatar to really look exactly as you want without paying a ton of real money. That's the big draw for people I know, they enjoy sites like Gaia or Neopets but feel as though they can't get anywhere without paying.
I don't talk about it a lot IRL but if and when I do, I say it's a combination of a Forum website and an Economy website. Then, if someone is interested I will throw in the 'Pet' part of the game.
I used to talk about it with my kids, for they are the ones who got me hooked on pet sites in the first place. Now I don't talk about it, being an older adult, most people I know wouldn't understand.
Made by Daringspirit"That game I play online." is my most common way of referring to Subeta. It usually just takes too long to explain and then people's eyes start to glaze over...
I usually don't bother trying to explain it to family or friends when they don't play a lot of things online. Ironically though, a lot of my family and friends play games on FB, so you'd think they'd understand. lol. Mostly since I've used this site to gain a following on my artwork, I've told people I've gotten interest with commission through an online petsite community. They don't really seem to understand it though, but I don't bother trying to make it more clear. Honestly, if they want to know more, they can google it themselves instead of making me explain when they don't honestly care. My husband is really the only one that knows anything about it, though he has several times suggested I 'quit' because of some of the drama I've had with cw's and other stuff, but I told him telling me that it's time to "move on" (as he's also said, like I'm too old to play it) is like me telling him to stop playing his PC games. And he was all "...good point." and hasn't brought it up since. haha. I do have fun here, but unfortunately, I don't invite friends or family to play because they wouldn't understand, and if anything- this is a perfect place to get away from people I know irl. lol.
I mention the pets, the HA feature (with all the items), and all of the events. The things that interest me the most. I've only mentioned it to people online though, never to offline friends. None of them seem like they have time, or rather would care.
