what are some better, affordable weapons for low-tier pets like mine (Smokester has the best stats among mine, and they're low)? is there a weapon guide anywhere?

Welcome back ! You're likely looking for Tier 1 weapons. The thing with weapons is that they mostly depend on who you're battling; you want to try and match your weapons to defend against what the opponent attacks with while simultaneously doing damage. So it's hard to give a general tip! At Tier 1 I started out with Endeavor Gauntlets and Shinwas Battle Wings, that's a solid beginning and both are cheap. But what you want after that is looking at the guides for specific enemies (not everybody can be beaten by a Tier 1 pet, but with the right weapons for the enemy, you'll do a LOT better). Guides for enemies you can find here in the forums. Do Battle Quests, you may be able to beat the first 5 opponents, and that will give you EXP points that you can use to swiftly upgrade your pet.

And also scrolls are really helpful, so make sure your battle pet is reading as many books as you can find so you can use better scrolls!

Edit: I don't know what the T1 weapons are 😅 But some that I have that are cheap and don't seem too bad? Also I think if you go to the beginner battle guide, you will get a default see the first time you go there that is not bad! link here!
