OMG, it's probably you I have to think for my Nuclear Rreign Beanbag! I was mentally thanking the anon donor at the time.
I had just adopted a Nuclear Rreign from the Adoption Center a day or two before that. I saw the beanbag and just had to snatch it up not knowing if I already had one or not (I didn't.) Definite plans to put it in his Treasure. : )

LAYERING
A long long time ago, a mere three days before I joined Subeta on 1/4/07, Subeta introduced HUMAN AVATARS.
They were beloved. They were loathed. But most importantly, they were CLUNKY.
The very original HAs had modesty censors - default white underwear that you had to put an item on top of to get rid of. This HA ONLY has an item on it's arms, no other wearable added:

Want to get rid of the bra? Have to wear a top option. Want to get rid of the underwear? A bottom option was required. Hence why there are so many early items of underwear - not for a sense of 'risque', but to allow for the removal of the default without requiring a full item cover. Sadly I don't have a saved example of the male underwear, but it was similar - I believe like mini boxers?
But in addition to having to have something cover the underwear field - there was no layering.
The site had it's own default idea of what items were supposed to go on top of or below each other, and you just had to deal with it. It led to wonderful HAs, such as:
Panties above pants! Ground items above pants! Arms above lower body! Held above body!

(in fairness, several of these HAs were made AFTER layering was introduced, but I'm using them to show examples of the glitches that you got, as I don't have many messed up layer HAs saved)
Truth be told, it wasn't actually SUPER terrible. Just led to some frustrating visual glitches, and a limitation on creativity. But, we as a community learn, adapt, and overcome. We figured out if you specifically would add items on to your HA in a certain order, then SOMETIMES the layers would glitch and let you layer something in a way that wasn't intended. It was fairly random, more of repeatedly trying to in essence 'brute force' the order through, but it worked! (sometimes!)
Fun fact, you could also only have one item per 'layer'! So you had a belt and wanted to wear another one? You'd select it and the first belt would vanish to be replaced by the second. Early HAs by default were simple, solely because of the limitations of the items that you could put on with them in their own clear distinct categories.

And then, on March 3, 2007, there was an exciting news post:
That's right, layering was just to be for Extra Special HAs, most people would never need to use it! laughs in modern HA
Needless to say, it wasn't the perfect rollout. There are some fun comments from that news post
Of course, I took advantage "almost" immediately - on March 18, 2007 - I wore .... A DOUBLE BELT

Suddenly, possibilities were endless!!! Except, not really.
Sidenote - oh wait, even less! I was wondering why I had the double belt so early and then no doubles for aaages. Because it was a glitch.
From November 20, 2007:
So apologies, NOW possibilities were endless! Two items per layer!! With GA users having three!! No more frustratingly trying to glitch the HA! and this is where the default underwear finally went away!
Can't find my glitch
Hmm, I'm very disappointed. There was an HA I made early on where I managed to glitch the HA, but I don't fully recall what I'd done. Glitched an item on to every layer? Glitched two? All I remember is that it was a MASSIVE eyesore, so terrible it got posted on the old subetadrama website which looks like it's not even around anywhere. I remember lurking and seeing someone complain about it, and me thinking (but not actually responding) that of course it looked terrible, it was just to mechanically exploit a glitch and show I could do it, not something to actually look good. It probably was THIS HA, made Dec 3 2007- or at least just as eyebleedingly painful, but for the life of me I can't remember what glitch I'd been abusing.
Anyhow, two items per layer, three with GA. This was a very very exciting time! Some users were disappointed as we'd been able to get MORE than three via glitching, but there was an official way of doing it now without needing to glitch. Of course, just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD:

But as time went on (and my ability to create a decent HA improved), layering slowly more and more started to become a thing. I believe the biggest use of layering that really was getting peoples attention of wanting MORE layers was the layering done with stockings by incredibly creative users who used sheer items to create a huge variety of lovely colors.
ripped jeans!
(while attempting to find examples of this, I discovered that I was apparently a HUGE fan of having mismatched colors poking through ripped jeans! no regrets, I still think the color peeks are fun!)

Never fear! January 10, 2010!
SIX items per layer!! SIX!!!!! and while 100 CSC was steep - July 18, 2010
Now a month of an extra slot, for just a quarter! I was in my full blown using-real-money-on-subeta stage. .....and I was a huge fan of HAs. .....and this was the only place where my fun-money was going to, so I didn't feel the need for restraint.....
....hence why there are 363 Ooh La Layers in the donation center now...
Eventually though, Subeta updated the wardrobe and functions changed. December 28, 2016
To be honest, I thought that the overall layer change came MUCH earlier, as by December 2016 I was basically GONE from the site, and my use of Ooh La Layers was clearly minimal. In fairness, on July 16, 2010, I made my 546th HA, and by the time I stopped making HAs by July 24, 2016, I'd only made 141 more HAs, which sounds like a lot until you remember that's over the course of 6 years. And at that time, I'd also transitioned into making less and less complex HAs, so the layering was usually just for allowing myself to have extra face items to have layered eyes and lips and blush at the same time. After all, my current HA has 7 items on the face alone, three of which are lips (and another 6 items on body).
I wonder.... 218 HAs made in 2007 153 HAs made in 2008 156 HAs made in 2009 27 HAs made in 2010 26 HAs made in 2011 45 HAs made in 2012 24 HAs made in 2013 12 HAs made in 2014 16 HAs made in 2015 9 HAs made in 2016
Well, that makes sense. At the time I purchased a bunch of Ooh La Layers, I still expected to use them a LOT. I probably thought I was just on a temporary HA slowdown. Sadly, I don't think they have any value now aside from a book to read to a pet, right?
....I don't have a conclusion for this post, it was just a lot of ramblings.
I will say, looking through news posts reminding me of the Tanning Salon. Anyone else remember that? You had to pay 10k sP to change the color of your skin! Well, only for unnatural colors. https://subeta.fandom.com/wiki/Anastasia (hair salon will get it's own post....eventually)
the internet, we never change
I forgot that users being absolutely bonkers is not a modern phenomena - on a news post where the wardrobe glitched pretty badly and a bunch of items vanished (they all came back when the glitch was resolved), there were lots of comments with the level of anger as this:
I was here when this news was posted almost 12 hours ago and nothing has changed - apart from the fact that people are just getting angrier.

Yes, I know, they&;re just pixels, calm down, working on it....blah, blah, blah. How many more times? TEST STUFF BEFORE RELEASING IT.
Thank you for the stroll down the HA memory lane. Honestly, it's amazing how much subeta's culture started revolving around wearables because HAs gained such an incredible traction

Man reading this reminded me of Ooh La Layers and I got war flashbacks ahaha
Ooh La Layers i remember them well. i still have 3 left.
This is just incredible because I don't know what the item limit is now but i counted once and there are some avatars I've made that have 20-odd layers of just makeup and hair and ink before we ever get to the clothes.
I use so many contouring items for things like ageing (on the Stanford and Stanley Pines avatars), muscle definition, shading. making faces look 3-D and a lot of my characters from my original fics have magical ink. Plus there are things like Darn Dirty Ape Repellent (available in my CW shop) that you can put on top of the base in your choice of most colours--its purpose is for when you are wearing cat, dog, bunny, goblin, wolf, fox, or other non human shaped ears with different placement on the head and you don't want to have to find a hairstyle that completely covers the ear lines. (it will not however do anything about the fact that some wigs, CWs especially, show the whole ear and hug the curve)...honestly the reason I am such a fan of Subeta is because you can do this!

Double drop to end the year to
