as for Toph - she's one of the best characters in the show, though she doesn't show up for the first arc. I watched Avatar: the last Airbender (the cartoon series that Toph is from) last year sometime, on Netflix. It starts a bit slow but it's pretty good!

Toph is introduced as a competitor in a tournament where people who are "earth benders" (using martial arts to sort of magically control dirt and rock) compete. She's this stout little scrappy girl who wins over opponents twice her size and age.

Her personality continues to deepen as you find out she's the pampered daughter of a wealthy family that has no idea she's fighting in tournaments, then that she's blind, then it just goes on from there. She's so much fun.
