the forums on there have never really been the most welcoming place. i used to peruse them a lot more when I was younger (10+ years ago) and they were just as hostile then.

I was a regular in the jellyworld forum (which "doesn't exist"). I took a hiatus once, came back, and said hi to everyone. the first response was someone going, "shut up [name], no one wants to read your stupid wingdings font." I was using verdana. :I

honestly I think most of the people who lurk in the neoboards are probably trolls. neo has always been so strict with their word filter and social rules, (especially after that incident with the girl who got stalked IRL because she gave away her real info on the general chat). even way back in the day, it was a common thing to troll and shitpost just because they leave you with so few options for what to talk about. iirc you were never even allowed to mention the names of other websites (even if you weren't linking to them) and their word filters are so strict they'll often catch you for using completely normal words.

i only have one friend who still plays neo and I know her IRL, she was a coworker of mine and she gifte me a grey zafara ❤ but we never talk on there even lol. i just go on to do my dailies and hoard items for the Pack Rat avatar.

Ugggh I can't seem to get away from Neo. My roommate is still an avid player so I am by default too lol.

Sheesh, some people. Used to love Neopets. Honestly, I still love the absolutely in-depth worldbuilding that made it up before it got bought up.

Buuut not a fan that it doesn't seem very "secure" as a website (the little lock next to the URL). So that's why I moved to Subeta.

Besides, Subeta's games are a little more fun. XP And seeing all these crazy names for items makes me giggle.

LOL yeah ok so to be fair I can't find anything about it now, it's always been kind of an urban legend and it's just something I remember from the time. I was on Neo when they still used to have General Chat & you could talk about anything (when it was still geared more towards older teens/college-age peeps like Subeta is), and I was there when they took it down and tightened the word filters (and started gearing more towards younger kids).

Rumor had it they shut the board down & banned all talk of anything Not Neopets (IRL, other websites, ANYTHING) because some girl posted her A/S/L on GC and it was used to track her down in real life.

Whether or not that ever happened is anyone's guess (this was the early '00s when everyone was still like "OMG DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS ONLINE!"), but the absolute batshit insane word filters have been a staple of Neopets culture ever since-- as finding ways around them has also been. That's why I personally believe that's contributed to the trolling. How can you not be compelled to troll when you can't even use the word "assume" because it says "ass" in it? Like, they're just asking for it at that point lmfao??

HOWEVER, the "Neopets was run by Scientologists" thing is my favorite factoid because it IS real and has been verified multiple times by the original Neopets Team. It was an accident. Which makes it even better IMHO. They didn't know they were being bought by Scientologists, lmao.

YES LOL the higher ups started wanting to censor stuff and everyone was kinda like, hahah oookay weirdoes... but then they were basically like "it's time to put the fear of god into these children" and at that point TNT was like FUCK, ABORT

When we got a desktop, I really wanted to go back and play all the flash games I grew up playing, and for some reason I CANNOT get them to work. I had the same problem on our Surface even though I have Flash installed, so I went to the forum and its just... barren.

one time when I was 12 or 13, I had an account insta-banned because I named it "imnotyourboyfriend" (like from Chowder) because it had the word 'boyfriend' in it. Like??? ok.

They're making a Nickelodeon show for Neopets now too. So it's probably gonna resurge.

I don't get on Neopets much anymore myself since the site conversion of '07. I used to like hanging around the help boards but activity has severely declined in the past decade and the COPPA restrictions can be very frustrating.

Used to love Neopets. I actually recently wanted to get back into my account (I had finally gotten my dreams pets: a Darigan Hissi and an Electric Draik), so I sent a message to TNT to let me back in (I froze my account on purpose and apparently you can ask to get it back anytime), but they've never given me a response. People say it's better to reach out to them on Facebook, but I don't have a Facebook account because I think Facebook is terrible. So I guess it's a lost cause. I should note that I never used the forums on Neopets. I was a loner. But I was also the world's greatest Shenkuu River Rush player. My top score was 7,100 points or something like that. I miss that game a lot. I kinda wish I could get back into my account and play it again. The tricks and techniques and trick combinations are all burned into my brain.

Maybe I'll try to reach out to TNT again.

Even though this is an old topic, I am compelled to reply lol Simply because it IS Neo. I used to frequent the site for years, the first revamp rolled around in 07, I got frustrated with the sudden rush of changes and took a short hiatus, came back and played for years. Trolls have always been a trend and so was hacking in the 90's and early 00's. I remember a slue of scams for a minute there...

Up until I got frozen for falling to the cracks of their word filter. I can't even remember the specifics, I just remembering being so angry from losing years of hard work. I don't get how someone can get frozen, TNT refuse to relinquish the account back over a misunderstanding. However; idiots like these can troll for days and its a pass. I didn't ever go back and have called Subeta home since.

I have thought about it though, unfortunately I have no clue what is going on with Neopets lately. So this was interesting to read.

I dropped Neopets like a hot potato after i tried to ask someone if a courgette was a cucumber and the site wouldn't let me use the word cucumber because it can be used in a perverse context XD FML
