I love one detail of Glacier pets, black sclera. Viorans have them too, with two exceptions. I have to keep myself occupied, my mind would wander...I would like to resume my old routine with waking at dawn and getting my chores done before 10:00. More so if I intend on keeping punctual with this upcoming semester.

Mrs Solomon was our matronly next door neighbor when I was very little. She would often bake the most delicious coffee bars, made with real strong coffee. They were a pan cookie that she frosted with a sugar glaze, sprinkled with hundreds and thousands and cut into diamond shapes. I smelled them baking and I would sneak out of the house and let myself into her kitchen by the back door. She would set a big plate of those cookies down right in front of me, and serve me a fancy cup of sweet milky coffee, and then she would proceed to tell jokes. I was too young at the time to understand most of her jokes, but these three I remember.

1. An old man faints and is rushed to the hospital. A nurse tucks him into bed and asks, “Mr. Schwartzman, are you comfortable?” The old man tosses his hand in the air, “I make a living…!”

2. A group of five Jewish women are eating lunch in a busy cafe. Nervously, their waiter approaches the table. “Ladies,” he says. “Is anything okay?”

3. A grandfather takes his grandchildren to the beach. They’re playing in the sand when suddenly, a massive wave comes and pulls the smallest grandson out into the water. Panicked, the grandfather prays to G-d. “Oh G-d, please bring him back! Please let him live!” Suddenly, an even bigger wave bursts out of the ocean, setting the little boy down right at his grandfather’s feet. He scoops him up into a hug. Then he stares up at the sky and says, “He had a hat.”

I devoured many a cookie in Mrs. Solomon's house over time and she told lots of jokes and stories. My mother disapproved of me sneaking out of the house and she complained to Mrs Solomon about all the sweets and especially about the amount of coffee I was drinking. Mrs. Solomon simply asked, "What? She's out of your hair for thirty minutes and you're complaining about coffee? You should drink so much coffee." That was the day that my mother and Mrs. Solomon became very dear friends.
