Might be true about tv/games. But people can in that case always decide to avoid it by not watching/playing. This is not the case whenever some new User doesn't know that you can disable HAs from showing.
If I had known what kind of bad feeling I'll get from Red stage 3, I would just have not looked at it. :)
But I completely understand your opinion in that case.
I'm not sure how people are conflating a warning with censorship. Like, there are plenty of warnings out there for the graphic content in Videodrome or Shivers. My choice to not watch Cronenberg's films doesn't stop anyone else from watching them. I just know my own limits and what I want to expose myself to.
Similarly, an unobtrusive warning with a reminder that you can turn of HAs does not stop strains from progressing, or prevent other users from seeing those strains. There isn't even a "slippery slope" argument, here.
ed. for clarity
yeah I can understand wanting a graphic warning that if you are sensitive to things like that...
I can say I've been here 12 years and didnt know we could turn has off. And also we put trigger warnings every where else whats so bad about putting them here on these events.
Bathory is hungry for MORE MORE I SAY. - If you think you are unattractive just remember you look like your ancestors, and hey all of them got laid-
Ok... so... I originally joined this site in '06/07... even served as a UA for a while... and yet I had no idea up until tonight that you can disable HAs.
I fully support having a little reminder in the news post that Survival CAN get gorey and that we CAN disable HAs in the forums for those who are a little less iron-stomached. Its common courtesy, honestly. Wouldn't affect how ANYONE ELSE sees the site, just a little awareness attached.

I'm in favor of a warning in the Survival FAQ and a little disclaimer blurb plus reminder of how to disable HAs in the announcements. That should be enough to give people a heads up and keep a consistent area for the warning.
Absolutely in favor of a little reminder of how and where to turn HAs off for the duration of Survival with a little disclaimer that this event is absolutely not just about love and candy hearts.
I would like a link about how to turn off HA in Survival announcements, personally, because not having any idea what they'll be like, and knowing I can be highly sensitive to such, I avoid both announcements AND the forums until the event is over. I didn't even know you could hide HA and I've been on this site for a while.
So yeah, here's me agreeing with a quick content warning and a link to how to avoid it please.
unpopular opinion time..
I strongly believe that if you (general you therefore no ping) have such a strong reaction to things online as to precipitate a mental breakdown you should seek guidance for support in tackling avoidance of whatever trigger(s) you have.
I don't necessarily agree with trigger warnings etc because they simply are a band-aid solution and in the longer term do not help with anyone's growing avoidance of whatever it is that triggers them. Basically, it does nothing to your overall resilience. And it's not that I'm advocating being subjected to images or content you don't like over and over, but a warning to avoid just seeing it once seems a bit excessive, don't you think? Don't like an image? Adblock it? I think the user posting about consumer responsibility is right. In today's age, I feel too little responsibility is placed on the consumer. If you're externalising and placing trust in a product to shield you from every single unpleasant thing, you're not assuming responsibility and you're going to make matters worse for yourself in the long run by enabling your anxiety to run around rampant and being upset at others for not warning you. Seeing uncomfortable things is part of human existence; how else are you going to be resilient?
I also hope that people know the difference between being uncomfortable and having a mental breakdown. I was going to expand on this but figured I don't want to open up even more of a can of worms. I guess this goes back to, if you have such a strong reaction to things like this on subeta, please seek help.
Yes, we can all Adblock individual images we don't like but this is about seeing other people's HAs in forum posts. A lot of people have pointed out there's already an option to turn off HAs but they had no idea it existed. If someone decides to turn HAs off for Survival it won't make the slightest difference to you - it's not like an individual player using this option is going to stop everyone else from seeing other people's HAs.
People having the option to turn off seeing other players' HAs is placing responsibility on the consumer but they need to know the option is there before they can take responsibility.
You can adblock the specific image strain. There's always a strain progression thread in the survival forum. All it takes it right clicking and adblocking which should then do the trick for all avatars with that strain.
My point isn't about what this means to me as a player though. It's what it is doing to that person's resilience.
Training up your own resilience is something that should be up to the individual to control and handle. If you're not ready to stare at the kind of content that makes you super uncomfortable, it won't do anything for you to have it shoved in your face repeatedly whenever you go to, say... a fun little contest involving kisses, or the news comments, or even to your own comments.
iirc you can't adblock the specific virus strain image. It's applied as a hex/effect to your HA. Then your HA is automatically rendered as an image for display around the site. So I don't think you can't adblock it any more than you can adblock, say, snowball overlays, some of the freaky Morostide hexes, or the gory wearables we have onsite. The individual strains uploaded to the strain tracking topics are images hosted offsite, so all you'd do is adblock that specific image hosted on Imgur.
Just for testing, I adblocked the Song/Fevermore virus skin and I can still see both and ' avatars perfectly fine, skin and all.
Frost tested this out on a skin and said they can still see it on the HA's of players who are wearing it. EDIT - The strain which caused the upset was the one with the corkscrew. The gory images were only during developmental stages and the end result wasn't like that.
An announcement at the start of Survival on these lines would put responsibility on the consumer.
"Survival is all about zombies. Some people find the HA images in the forums disturbing. If you don't want to see these images go here to switch them off. You can still kiss other players for Candy Hearts and switch the HAs back on after the event."
