I'm so glad others noticed this! When I was hanging out in Nuegarten today, the image changed from happy to sad as the page loaded, almost like a GIF or flipbook. I'm all for giving someone the benefit of the doubt, I guess? as long as Oatmeal stays safe. <3 Oatmeal forever!!!! <3 <3 <3
Sing it! I've never actively disliked an NPC before, but Jesus man.
What I find interesting is that Rumi and Manwar's texts have changed, while Anne's remains unaltered; she's the one whose perspective should count for the most here.
Is this the official version of events or just speculation? Up till ~3-4 months ago I was on a fairly lengthy hiatus and I'm still out of touch on lots of things... have I missed out on a source of information beyond what's given in their respective nightmares and the (very minimal) information from the Subetapedia?
Oh. Hmm. Something is going on, and I'm excited to find out what it is. Plot? Story? More development on the murder thing?! I want to know.
(also i'm lowkey dying at people spelling this "Nuegarten", one of my pets' name is Nue and she's the absolute opposite of a vegan so this is just.. really hilarious to me)
It first came out in the comments of a news post a while ago. Amber let slip/gleefully informed us than Gunther killed Bubbles so he could have control of the brewery. It might have been one of the ones for new NPC info in the subetapedia, but I can't find it. There's a little more in the comments for unlocking Bubbles as a challenger, but beyond that and the nightmares there's not much more information, but what more is there to know?
Thank you for the response! I did read the comments of all the news articles, but regarding Gunter's motives there didn't seem to be much to go on except the SubetaPedia statement that he "feels guilty over what happened between him and his brother over the brewery" (emphasis mine). A lot of people leaped to inferring greed/jealousy based on those last three words, but it seems to me that there could be a lot more to know!
I mean here's one alternate theory...
SPOILER (click to toggle)
The-brewer-latterly-known-as-Bubbles was grossly mismanaging the brewery, and on the verge of running the whole family into financial ruin. (Do we know what family they have besides Anne? I assume there may be other possible dependents.) Maybe he was letting rats run riot and eat/spoil all the grain because he was too soft-hearted to put down traps.
Which of course doesn't mean Gunter was at all justified in murdering him, I am not advocating that by any means -_-; but it would make it an act of desparation rather than sheer greed - "to avoid financial ruin" isn't quite the same as "for financial gain".
I'm basing that speculation on one of the few facts we do have about Bubbles, which is that he loves his ratties: ...although I don't know (is there lore about it?) how much the Unliving retain from their former lives; obviously it's not relevant if his love of rats only developed after his death. It would make it especially poignant though, if Gunter's frustration boiled over because he couldn't understand why his brother would risk their livelihood to protect a bunch of vermin; only years later when he gets so attached to his own pet, Oatmeal, does he start to have some understanding of his brother's sentimental refusal to harm animals.
...Okay, so that is probably not actually what happened at all; I'm just trying to illustrate the point that there might be extenuating circumstances we don't know about (I'll be disappointed if there aren't, tbh). I'm sure more imaginative people than myself could dream up literally dozens of other possible scenarios where things are less cut and dried. Bring on the wild mass guessing. :)
That's an interesting theory, at least.
Hopefully we do get some more to the story, whatever ends up happening, because they've been building this up for a while now. It would be nice to get some sort of resolution or continuation. And of course the big question of whether the other NPCs will find out and how they would react.
Here's another news article related to Gunter killing Bubbles: Cash Shop: Eerie Mash Tun. It doesn't really add to the "why" but, if were the jury here's more facts!
Don't worry, Gunter, you can still support your vegan, alt-food lifestyle in prison - after all, Whole Foods will employ you for mere cents a day! Won't that be grand?
I know they don't do that (since April 2017) but I couldn't resist the crack...
Aww he does look so sad. I wonder what they are going to do. It would be nice to have an event. There is rarely any in the summer. It would be really great for prizes.
❤
Good. Suffer. I will assemble outside the brewery and picket for his imprisonment
Yeah, I suppose it could have been for any reason. I'm not sure where I got the idea that he just wanted full control of the brewery, but I know I've had it in my mind for a while.
I kind of hope it doesn't end up too heavy on the mitigating circumstances. The murder itself was so horrible that any sort of back-story that would make it appear that Gunters actions were even somewhat reasonable would be really hard to accept.
A lot of people feeling bad for Gunter while I'm loving the idea of him slowly drowning in guilty until he can't take it anymore and breaks.
If we're getting a plot I wonder what we would do if he just confessed right in the beginning, if not I hope we play detective to find out the truth by talking with others NPCs and looking for clues (i.e. without talking with Gunter directly). If we don't get a plot, I'm burning this place down.
I'm not so sure! Plus murderers start with people they know. The way he talks, it's almost like he has no empathy for anyone -but- Oatmeal. Like he has no problem killing, but loving Oatmeal has made him wonder why he values that life, but no others.
Bubbles can't fully remember his death (the Eerie Mash Tun news announcement implied that it's in there somewhere, but probably repressed), and he can't remember his family. I would guess that the unliving probably retain their personalities to some degree (though I don't have anything to substantiate that) but I wouldn't expect them to be exactly the same, if that makes sense. Bubbles cares for rats now, but that doesn't mean he cared for rats specifically in the past, or necessarily let them run rampant in the Brewery, even if he had rats. He even serves things with rats as ingredients, so it might just be a case like, "Well, MY chickens are pets, and I won't eat them, but I still love chicken wings."
Side tangent: I want to know what happened to Bubbles's arm out of sheer curiosity (was it pre or post mortem?)
TRUE. Well, I'm still up for dragging Gunter to jail, but as a plan B, my wife Merana hasn't had a human sacrifice since she's been freed :)
Sharp eyes dude! I'm intrigued, could this be the beginning of a plot? (Man it's been such a hecka long time since we had one with an actual story and I shouldn't be getting my hopes up but aslkdjkalsjd)
I hope this doesn't amount to nothing in the end though. I mean they can't just give him this intense backstory and have him feel guilt over it and leave it at that, guilt cannot atone for murder friend. I mean we don't know exactly why he killed his bro but:

I kinda wonder how many users that love and bend over backwards to support characters that have murdered a great more and/or were very much villains but "given a redemption," are ones that are/will be gunning for Gunter to be locked up/killed off/etc. Characters like Snape from Harry Potter, The Evil Queen/Regina from Once Upon a Time, or Loki from the MCU.
Will there be jury duty? lol Titania McGee better be on top of this developing story~
