honestly why I hardly ever go on Tumblr nowadays.

I get some of you have a good heart, and though your intentions may be good, but I think you're all going about it the wrong way. It is sad and unfortunate that someone lost their money, and who's to assume that the OP wouldn't have returned it if they were certain on who lost the money? I think y'all were pretty quick to jump on that accusation.

TBH, it's fair game. When it comes to finding money it's not really as though you can just find the owner and return it easily on the spot unless you are able to find someone noticeably searching for it within the time frame of being in the location. You can't just ask around either, someone could make a false claim that it was there's, who knows?

One persons loss, another persons gain. Should be careful about where you store your money. It's irresponsible, but it's a common human error, we all lose something. Hell, I lost my debit card once, I retraced my steps back to where I last had it which was at a check out counter of a bookshop. Asked the person at the register who asked the employees. Supposedly they hadn't seen the card, but it was gone. Luckily I canceled the card immediately after and got a new one.

The most money I've found laying around was a single $1 bill at a general dollar store, I was very young at the time but I found it quite hilarious and coincidental. I kept it, I could've spent it on something in that moment, but I wanted to save up my money as a kid.

The most I've ever found was $20 in middle school. It was sitting on the floor during class change, and I didn't see it get dropped by anyone, so I pocketed it and bought myself school lunch for a couple of days.

Loose bills are not to be treated the same if you found a wallet or even a credit card. It's very hard to prove who the actual owner is unless you happen to come across that person by luck (if you notice a person frantically looking through their purse or wallet for the money they dropped, or if you see someone retracing their steps to the location you found the dropped money, or if someone does ask if you had seen dropped money anywhere).

If the owner is actively looking for dropped money, it's pretty obvious to give it back. But if no one is looking to reclaim it, it's yours.

With wallets, I'd take it to the police if there's no ID for the owner in it. For cards, I cut them up and throw'em away so no scumbag tries to use it. Having witnessed my mom get her card numbers stolen a bunch of times, I don't wish that upon anyone else.

the controversy in this thread is so pointless... you can&;t just go around asking people "hey is this your money i found on the ground" bc they&;ll just take it. and if all your payday check was going to bills wouldn&;t you be tempted to keep it for yourself? people can&;t live on the bare minimum constantly and maintain good health, mental or physical. jesus, guys. anyways, i think the most i&;ve ever found was a dime on the floor at work, i&;m not very observant.

Aside from the above point: I've lost 20 - 50 on multiple occasions while being poor and while it was upsetting, I always shrugged it off and granted the finder good tidings before moving on. It's not that devastating to lose money, money can't always be returned and a lot of people do what I do: Shrug and move on. Wasting police time over such a small amount isn't realistic either.

When I was about 8 I was walking with my mom going home when I spotted something on the ground, no one was around and the streets were pretty barren at the time. So I picked up the crumpled "trash" and turns out it was a ten dollar bill, so I showed my mom but she wasn't looking and said it was just garbage, until I pestered her and she uncrimpled it... needless to say she was pretty happy that she didn't make me toss it back on the ground.

Also not money per ce but I found an iPod on the floor of my high school once. I turned it into the office. The secretary there was amazed that someone would actually turn something like that in.

Just wow at people trying to shame you for this. Please learn how the world works lmao. Ignore them, you didn't do anything wrong.

I'm pretty sure the most I've ever found was $20, also at Walmart! I feel like Walmart is the place for money to be dropped for some reason. I remember other times seeing money dropped there, but for those I saw who they fell from.

I once lost $25 from my pocket at school, it was my lunch money from my mom. We were poor, so I was so upset about it, I may have cried and my anxiety was definitely off the charts. I disagree that its not devastating to lose money because it often is, but even then, I dont wish ill on the person that found it. How were they supposed to get it back to me? Theres just no way and if you find money you keep it, thats just what it is. Its different if you see it fall from the person but if its just on the ground, its yours.

I only get $600 a MONTH and I wouldn't just be like, "Finders keepers!" I would have picked it up and waited nearby to see if anyone came back for it who was obviously looking around all anxious and I would've asked them, "Did you lose something?" and if they said yes and said money I'd ask what denomination and if they seemed honest when answering $50 I would've given it to them. If I sat for quite a while and nobody came by though I would feel bad for whoever lost it but take it.

And people can be mad at me for being "judgey" but again I get $600 a month so I obviously know what it's like to not have much (and btw it's super judgey to be like, "You all don't know what it's like," when you don't actually know other people's circumstances.)

Oh and tbh the thing that got me most about OP is how she was super excited to find it and made no attempt to find the rightful owner. It was totally a "finders keepers lol" situation from her own description. So yeah, her attitude is what makes me angry. The person who lost it might also be in dire straits. Again, the most judgey people in this thread are the people who are complaining about people bashing OP. I mean, "You all need to know how the real world works," "None of you know what it's like to be poor," etc. are SO judgey. Like where do you guys get off making those JUDGEMENTS about other people you know NOTHING about? Plenty of poor people are honest and charitable. I know a ton of people who live in poverty who go way out of their way to help others. In fact, I know far more people like that than middle class people who are charitable.

I will love you forever if you trade me:

I'm sorry but why did you ping me? You didn't refute any of my points, I've lost more than you on occasion and your comment swings back in support of my statement. Were you agreeing with me because it didn't seem that way at the beginning.

Also, let's frame this properly.

Losing $20-$50: Upsetting, regardless of pay grade. Losing $100+: Devastating, if you're poor. If you're rich, you might as well have lost a tenner.

I think you misunderstood me or I, you, or something..? I'm almost completely agreeing with you, I was sharing another instance where I lost money that somebody probably found and kept, and agreeing that thats not wrong of them/its silly for people to police op for this. I only disagree that you said its not devastating to lose money because again a lot of people find it to be even in smaller amounts, such as I did.

I've also lost significantly more than what I mentioned, just not in paper bill form, so I'm not sure why youre trying to use losing more against me.

Yeah, definite miscommunication here because, again, I couldn't tell whether you were agreeing with me or arguing with me. As for why I brought up how much I lost, IDK, I guess I was trying to correct you on something that's subjective, on the assumption you were arguing with me. My logic was, "if I can be poor as eff and lose 50 bucks without crying, why are you crying over $25," but everyone's circumstances are different.

I lost $100. I frantically looked around for it since I was going to buy textbooks with it but to no avail. I just shrugged it off and put on my big girl panties and hoped that someone that really needed it found it on campus.

We "need to learn how the real world works"? Um sure when that last 20 you lost was for your gas to get you to work. When you lose your last 50 that was for food until the end of the month and now you'll starve or be stranded then sure preach to us "how the real world works". Until then I still stand that she could be checking in with a manager or the service desk to see if someone went by asking if their money was turned in. And how would OP feel if it was flipped? Idk about you guys but at the very least I'd swing by and check in with store staff before leaving and dubbing it mine freely. I'd be a mess if I found out I lost cash I needed to buy food or gas by pulling something else out of my purse and not knowing the cash stuck to the thing and fell out.

What's rubbing me wrong are the replies implying store workers are just thieves and liars. Like no just stop with that mentality or stop shopping mmm k? If we are all liars or stealers why do you go and hand us your id or credit cards or other personal info (and that of anither person if sending money for pick up) when dealing with service desks? Or stop asking the employees for help because you know they are liars and won't tell you anything truthful or help you. Seriously we already get treated like garbage without shit like this added to it. There are websites dedicated to those horrors experienced daily. Don't be like this and jump on the train of the workers will just take the cash for themselves. No amount of cash is worth being fired and losing out on the long term ability to earn your own money. Or being blacklisted and never get another job with a company if you wanted to work for them again in your life.

FINALLY GOT THE 15K WARDROBE DONE!!!!! Next up gutting and selling it.
