...in the middle of the floor at Walmart yesterday. I almost had a fucking heart attack and was furiously trying to contain my joy (so that no one would say it was theirs). My mom was trying to get me to shut up and dad joked that I should buy them dinner out somewhere nice. All the while we shopped, I was bouncing, quite literally, because this couldn't have come at a better time. I am broke af right now. Pay day is tomorrow, but all that's going to bills.

I just...it was laying there...in the middle of the floor. I always spot trash on the floor and kick it out of the way or pick it up and throw it out, and I spotted it from probably 25 feet away and as I got closer I was all like...no...no way...it can't...it...HOLY SHIT IT IS! I thought it was a 5 at first and then I saw the 0 and I almost died, lmao.

So what's the most money you've ever found? What's your luckiest find? Etc related?

Any time I've found money I've then also tried to find the owner. This post makes me sad, honestly.

To be fair, if no one was nearby and she didn't run into somebody looking frantically for it, this would be a really difficult thing to do. Lost and Found's probably just gonna pocket it themselves, so she might as well keep it. Glad you got some money when you needed it, that is a good feeling.

BUT,

...this sounds kinda crappy. You realize that bill didn't just poof into existence, yeah? Somebody had to lose fifty bucks. You didn't even pretend to consider that person and it comes off like you wouldn't have given it back even if you had found the owner.

I agree with , unless you physically watched someone accidentally drop the money from their pocket, it would be hard to return it to the owner without some rando claiming it was theirs just to get $50 free. Sucks for that person that dropped it, but they should keep their money somewhere safer and tucked away, especially if you're going to be carrying around larger bills.

The most I've found is $10 I think... it was when I was younger and it was lying on the sidewalk, I was pretty happy haha!

Jeez guys, I would have given it back had I seen someone freaking out over losing it! I didn't want to make a fuss because then someone probably would have lied about it being theirs.

I wouldn't advertise how much I found, or maybe even say it was the $5 you initially thought. If someone told me they lost $50 after that, though, I'd give it to them.

I once spotted a whole wallet lying on the ground at the bicycle stand at my school. There was money in it but I don't know how much, didn't count it and also didn't go so far that I checked for identity card or anything - I don't kow, it felt too weird invading someone elses privacy. In the end I just gave the wallet to the school's secretary and never heard of it again (in fact I didn't even hear a friendly word from the secretary, she didn't wrote my name down or whatever else you usually see in those fairytales they broadcast on tv and so on...she rather made me feel like some shady gangster for handing in a wallet full of stuff, lol) but that's ok - I didn't get rich or my ass patted but at least I kept my personal level of good conscience and that's what matters the most to me. I don't think I could've slept well after taking the wallet for myself.

I agree with you. That is sad to not try to do the best thing.

To everyone else: what if it was your 50 and you didn't know until you go pay for your stuff? Do you always notice when you go checking your phone or something else, that you dropped a bill or card? That may have been a child's bday cash that's now sad they can't buy their gifts. You don't have to "see someone freaking out" to decide to return it. If lost at a store usually taking it to customer service or a manager does the trick because they can watch cameras to see who lost it. Some people do go back calmly to see if they lost anything. And wallets are a good idea to check with someone else, preferably on camera, so they can try to page or contact the owner. Not everyone does a freak out dance when they lost something.

I work at Wal-Mart and I can't even begin to tell you its mostly adults losing phones and wallets and kids losing the loose cash. More than once while I was taking loose cash to get logged with a manager a kid would be at customer service asking if someone brought it in. And one person had a hole in their bag they were unaware of and ending up losing their rent money in the store and nobody brought it forward.

So yes please tell me again how its suddenly oh so fair because "I didn't see someone freak out"

FINALLY GOT THE 15K WARDROBE DONE!!!!! Next up gutting and selling it.

If I see money laying there without anyone around, I just take it and keep it for myself. I'm not going to put up ads with 'Have you lost your $50?'. Watch the line of annoying people trying to get it. I've returned a lot of wallets/bags in the past. It seems like I have the eye for these type of things. I usually search for an ID and call them, or call someone from their cellphone list. However, I would never rejoice at these type of things. It's never fun to lose money, let alone your entire wallet.

idk about you, , but i ALWAYS double-check when i know i have cash in my pocket and i pull something out of it. also how do you not notice a hole in your own purse? that you use every day?

if they lose it, it's really their fault for not being careful. i'm not saying they deserve to have their cash picked up and pocketed, but they really could have made more of an effort, and adults should not give children loose cash unless they know they can trust the child not to lose it.

i just can't imagine people not being very vigilant with loose cash, especially anything larger than a $20.

then again i'm always paranoid if i've dropped something lmao.

the controversy in this thread is so pointless... you can't just go around asking people "hey is this your money i found on the ground" bc they'll just take it. and if all your payday check was going to bills wouldn't you be tempted to keep it for yourself? people can't live on the bare minimum constantly and maintain good health, mental or physical. jesus, guys. anyways, i think the most i've ever found was a dime on the floor at work, i'm not very observant.

The most I ever found was $20 on a sidewalk outside. Looked around to see if there was anyone nearby who could have dropped it, there wasn't. So I happily pocketed it and was pleased at my good fortune.

Finding a loose bill is completely different than finding a wallet or purse. There's not much you can do to track down the owner of a bill, unless you actually see something fall from someone's pocket. Even if someone saw you pick it up and said "hey I lost that" how do you believe them? I mean, I wouldn't argue about it and I'd hand it over, but there would a part of me wondering if they were lying.

They do keep a log in the cash office for any money found. Just go to customer service or find a csm (yellow vest) and let them know, if you ever want to turn in any money you find.

I found like... $5 at school once. Turned it into the office in case someone wanted to claim it.

A few weeks later, I had literally forgot it, but got called to the office after classes let out. The office ladies had put together a plastic baggie containing the $5, plus $5 more, and a handful of Hershey's Kisses for being honest.

I found almost $200 in an empty parking lot once. It was right at my feet when I stepped out of the car. It was so tempting to hang onto it, especially since I was shopping for a new desk chair at the time, but I contacted the local police and handed it over.

I got it back 2-3 months later because no one came looking for it, so that was a pretty nice windfall, 100% guilt free. 👍 The wait was excruciating though. :P

I found $100 in the middle of nowhere. No way to figure out who lost it or when they did.

I also found $40 once but that I did know who dropped it as I saw it being dropped, the lady who was running the booth. I gave it back to her and she yanked it back like I was the once trying to steal it. Then she quickly turned her back to me and pretty much ignored me. :|

A service announcement: if you put money in those plastic easter eggs, make sure you or your child checks everyone one of them before tossing them. I found $5 in the pile of easter eggs in the alley.

Wow you guys are super judgy. In an ideal world we all know what OP should have done - but honestly I’ve been in some really bad places before (money wise) and I cannot tell you how much of a relief it was when one of those times I found a ten on the floor. It might be easy for someone who is financially stable to do the right thing, but if you’re struggling then that money could quite literally be lifesaving.

I don't think it's immoral to keep a lost bill, especially if you're short on money. The most I've ever come across myself was $20 back in high school.

one time when i was 14 my grandma sent my brother and i to the store to buy some stuff, and since she didn't have any small notes she literally gave us a €100 one

we only spent like €20 but because i was a dumb fucking child i somehow lost €80 fucking euros ; _____ ; so we walked the distance between the store and her place like 10 times?? to try and find the money?? we also asked at the store in case anyone saw me drop it and picked it up or something but nothing my grandma was absolutely livid lmao BUT LESSON LEARNED I SUPPOSE after that i've been extra careful with money

yeah but anyway i would have pocketed the $50 too tbh ¯(ツ)
